    They didn’t need that Leeds.

They needed to put pressure on the Saints line.

Unfortunately there they’ve come up with a mistake.

He loses his footing and on the way down he loses possession.

Saints will have to do without early try scorer Matty Lees, who is off for a head injury assessment.

They then concede another penalty for offside and Leeds will try again.

Well, Leeds are not giving this up without a fight. Tom Briscoe and James Bentley both go for the line but are denied.

But Leeds are awarded a penalty. They will have another set within 10m of the Saints line.

So what do Leeds have left in the tank? They have put in massive efforts to win at both Catalans and Wigan in the play-offs.

You sense they need to score next - but they're up against Super League's meanest defence.

St Helens have started the second half in much the same manner as they did in the first - with a barnstorming dash to the line.

That is some immense strength from Konrad Hurrell to ground the ball over the line.

I can only dream of such strength, I'm afraid.

    The Tongan powerhouse!

He has somehow manufactured a way to reach his arm out and score.

He had no right to score that.

    Konrad Hurrell, goal Tommy Makinson

    Yes, yes they are.

It's a try that is all about Konrad Hurrell's brute force.

The Tongan powerhouse worked his way on to the ball at speed and somehow forced his way through four Leeds defenders to touch down.

That was just reward for St Helens' early pressure in this second half.

Rhyse Martin's conversion just before half-time was his 37th consecutive successful kick. That's some hot streak.

It's worth remembering that Leeds trailed at Wigan at half-time in the semi-finals but came out swinging after the break to turn the game on its head. And they scored just before the break at the DW Stadium too.

The Rhinos have great momentum after ending the season with 11 wins in 13 games before tonight.

But this is St Helens we're talking about. The champions three times in a row.

What a second half we have in prospect.

That's been coming. Leeds have regrouped and have looked a different side in the aftermath of conceding that penalty from Rhyse Martin's tackle on Jonny Lomax earlier.

I suppose you could say as Martin tipped him over, that was the tipping point.

And at what an opportune time that try has come as well, right before the break.

  17. Half-timepublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

    St Helens 12-6 Leeds

Rhyse Martin's conversion is the last play of the half as the hooter sounds.

For long spells during that first half, Leeds were hanging on as St Helens threatened to cut loose after those tries from Matty Lees and Jon Bennison.

But, as at Wigan last week, the Rhinos defended resloutely and that try from Kruise Leeming means they only trail by six points at the break.

  19. try

    Leeds are on the board!

The try owes a huge amount to Zak Hardaker, who broke through the middle before being felled by Jonny Lomax.

But Leeds had numbers to spare and made them count as Kruise Leeming powered his way over from close range.

    Game on!
