  1. Post update

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

    James Hook

That's all from us tonight. I'm off for a seriously long lie down.

Keep an eye on the website, where we will have a report from tonight's game and a story on Ben Morgan's injury.

But, for now, I will leave you with the image of Gloucester hero James Hook celebrating with his mates. It might be a fun Friday night in the West Country.

    Goodnight folks.

  2. More to come

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

There's still plenty more Premiership rugby to sink your teeth into this weekend.

Tomorrow, Bath v Wasps strikes me as a possible humdinger. Leaders Northampton are at Sale, and Harlequins are hosting a resurgent Leicester side.

And on Sunday it's Newcastle v London Welsh and London Irish v Exeter.

Don't forget, you can listen to all of those games through the BBC Sport website.

  3. How it stands

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

    Table

Here's how the Premiership table looks then. Despite all that drama, there's very little change. Saracens move a point closer to Bath, and Gloucester draw level with Harlequins.

  4. Seesaw at Kingsholm

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys told BT Sport: "It was just going from one emotion to the other. We thought we'd lost - we thought we'd lost the bonus point. Then all of a sudden we're coming back for a penalty to us. Huge credit to James Hook."

  5. Ben Morgan injury

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

We should add to David Humphreys' quotes there that BT Sport are saying they have heard Ben Morgan may have suffered a fracture to his lower leg.

Although there is no confirmation of that, and it is only reports at the moment.

As Humphreys says, we won't know for sure until he goes through all the proper checks tonight.

  6. Ben Morgan injury

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

    Ben Morgan

Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys told BT Sport about Ben Morgan: "At this stage we haven't any idea. He's off to get a check-up. We'll probably not have a proper idea until tomorrow morning as to the severity of the injury."

  7. Post update

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

    Nicely summed up David.

If you've joined us late, you've missed a belter. But don't worry, I'll try to surmise events for you.

Dan Robson's superb solo try in the first half was not enough to have Gloucester in front at half-time, with Saracens' penalty try putting them 13-11 ahead.

It opened up after the break and Billy Vunipola bundled over for Sarries before Callum Braley finished a wonderful Gloucester move that started under their own posts.

Mako Vunipola then looked to have done enough for the visitors, but James Hook's penalty, from miles away, nicked it at the death.

    Tom Bradshaw

    BBC Sport at Kingsholm

"If ever there was a night to kick-start a season, this was it.

"Gloucester have been in indifferent form for most of the season - and were indifferent on occasions tonight - but to snatch a last-second victory like that will do wonders for a side whose morale was at very a low ebb only a fortnight ago. Qualification for Europe will now feel like a realistic goal."

  11. Post update

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

It looked like any hope was dead for Gloucester, and the home crowd, who have been frustrated at times tonight, are lapping it up.

They were a man down in those final moments remember.

Overall, they probably just deserve it. Saracens do get a bonus point, but I don't think it will be much consolation.

Right. Take a breath every one.

  12. Full time

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

    Remarkable scenes. Unbelievable.

Saracens thought they had put the nail in Gloucester's coffin with a try, but instead offside is given.

James Hook steps up from 50 metres, puts the penalty between the posts, and the home side win by a point at the death.

    Kingsholm goes suitably bonkers.

  13. Penalty (Hook)

    Gloucester 24-23 Saracens

    James Hook
  14. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

So instead, James Hook will try and kick from 50 metres...

  15. No try (Ashton)

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

Saracens turnover and Chris Ashton thinks he is away. Offside.

  16. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

And there's the chance. James Hook gets some space and puts his boot through it...

It's nowhere near. Oh dear. That could be it.

  17. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

Again Gloucester build. Maybe searching for a drop goal?

  18. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

Gloucester hammering away but only hitting cul-de-sacs. Saracens seem to have discovered some discipline.

David Halaifonua makes a go for the line but is held back. Nervous stuff with moments left.

  19. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

Oh, it's an ugly scrum that sees Petrus du Plessis go in midair and bend over double.

JP Doyle says there was nothing wrong though and resets.

  20. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

So how much fire is in the Gloucester bellies?

They've got a bit of fortune, that's for sure, as Alex Goode drops the ball likes it's a bar of soap inside his own 22 and concedes a scrum.

Meanwhile, Saracens are back up to 15 players.

  21. Post update

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

The problem for Gloucester here, is they have to play most of the remaining time with 14 men. Saracens, meanwhile, will have George Kruis back in the fold in a few minutes.

  22. Try (M Vunipola, missed con Goode)

    Gloucester 21-23 Saracens

And no sooner as Jonny May sat his rear end on the bench, Saracens are back in front.

It's as simple as you like. There is no stopping the driving maul and Mako Vunipola is over to match his brother's try from earlier.

Alex Goode misses the conversion though, so it's still nervous times for the visitors.

  23. Sin-bin (May)

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

It's the fourth yellow card of the night and levels up the numbers.

Saracens instigate a driving maul and Jonny May infringes, so he goes to the bin.

  24. Post update

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Like Ben Morgan before him, Nick Wood gets a round of applause from the crowd as he has taken off on a stretcher. On the lad's 32nd birthday too, I'm told.

But, we're back underway and, oh, we could have another in the sin bin...

  25. Post update

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

I'm not sure how chilly it is at Kingsholm, but none of the players seem to be doing much to keep warm.

I know they're tough lads, but I'd be tempted to execute a few world-class star jumps to keep the blood flowing.

  26. Replacement

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Nick Wood's treatment gives Saracens time for a bit of a reshuffle.

With George Kruis in the sin-bin, the visitors sacrifice Marcelo Bosch for Maro Itoje to replenish the forwards.

  27. Post update

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Plenty of players standing around looking concerned.

If you've only just joined us, England number eight Ben Morgan has already been taken off on a stretcher.

And his Gloucester team-mate Nick Wood is about to go the same way. Not great to see two serious injuries in one night.

  28. Post update

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Once again. Worrying this one. The stretcher is back out and they're strapping Nick Wood to it.

It looked like he took a bit of a stinger in a challenge.

  29. Get involved #bbcrugby

    Callum Braley

Callum Braley's try was his first in the Premiership - but will it be enough to give Gloucester a famous victory over Saracens?

With less than 15 minutes to go, let us know where you think this match is heading on Twitter via #bbcrugby

  30. Post update

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Saracens are made of stern stuff though and turn Gloucester around with a dink through.

They will have a penalty deep in the Gloucester 22. But we have another troubling injury.

Nick Wood has taken a blow and is receiving treatment. Looks to be around the head and neck area.

  31. Post update

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Where were this Gloucester side in the first hour of the game? They have the devil about them now and are prodding away at the 14 men of Saracens.

  32. Sin-bin (Kruis)

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

Hmmm. George Kruis might be a lucky boy here.

He picks up David Halaifonua and plonks him back down on the ground. Is it a red card? The television match official says no and recommends a yellow card.

The way Halaifonua lands may have helped Kruis out, as he goes down on his shoulder, rather than the neck or head.

  33. Try (Braley, con Hook)

    Gloucester 21-18 Saracens

    Callum Braley

Wow. I thought the Dan Robson try was good.

    This was even better.

First, Jonny May breaks from his own five-metre line. It then goes through the hands to Gareth Evans, whose saunters forward and then releases Callum Braley who has all the space in the world to run into. Great try.

  34. Penalty (Hook)

    Gloucester 14-18 Saracens

Gloucester pummelling Saracens just five metres out and the visitors concede the penalty.

James Hook finds his range again and gets their first points of the half.

  35. Replacement

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Dan Robson is done for the night - he's replaced by Callum Braley. But he gave us the most memorable moment of the game.

Rob Savage is back on too, so both sides have their full XV.

  36. Post update

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Jonny May shows a rare bit of class in this period. He gets fingertips to a big kick and, just before it looks like it will be knocked on, scoops a hand underneath the ball.

It gives Gloucester territory and another chance to build.

  37. Post update

    Tom Bradshaw

    BBC Sport at Kingsholm

    Billy Vunipola

"Ben Morgan was England's man of the series in the autumn internationals, so his injury is a huge blow for both club and country.

"The bitter pill is slightly sweetened for Stuart Lancaster by the fact that Billy Vunipola (pictured), Morgan's main rival for the England number eight shirt, has scored a try tonight and has been pivotal in the Saracens pack."

  38. Post update

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Now it's Gloucester messing around. They chuck it about across the back line with a certain lack of poise and, not for the first time tonight, Billy Twelvetrees sees his kick charged down.

The Cherry and Whites just about manage to mop up and win a scrum.

  39. Post update

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Anyway. Back to the game. Saracens are back up to their full quota as David Strettle comes on, and his side waste a chance to break as Marcelo Bosch messes up his kick.

  40. Replacement

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

    Ben Morgan

The big number eight has now been stretchered off the field. It looks like a pretty bad leg injury, by all accounts. Gareth Evans is on in Ben Morgan's place.

  41. Post update

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Ben Morgan is taken off on a stretcher, while receiving the applause of the Kingsholm crowd.

He's moving around, but looks pretty shaken up. We'll be keen to get an update on his condition as son as we can - as will Stuart Lancaster.

  42. Post update

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Ben Morgan has been receiving treatment for a few minutes now.

The immediate worry, of course, is his health. But it also might have England supporters twitching, with the Six Nations around the corner.

  43. Post update

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Gloucester's Ben Morgan looks in a bad way. The England number eight is getting some gas and air on the pitch with the game brought to a halt.

  44. No try (Hook)

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

I almost had to eat my words. Gloucester come straight back at Saracens and James Hook dives for the line. He's inches away but the replays show he's not made it.

  45. Post update

    Chris Jones

BBC Radio 5 live reporter at Kingsholm

"No team in the Premiership does the 'smash-and-grab' quite like Saracens, and they are at it again here. Two mauls, two tries, and now Gloucester have it all to do."

  46. Try (B Vunipola, missed con Goode)

    Gloucester 11-18 Saracens

Saracens kill some minutes when they win a penalty from the scrum. And not only that, they build up a bit of steam with the catch and drive from the subsequent line-out.

Tom Savage comes in from the side and gets a yellow card for his trouble.

And before you know it Saracens are powering through with the maul and Billy Vunipola touches down in the middle of it all.

So much for that Gloucester barrage.

  47. Sin-bin (Savage)

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

  48. Kick-off

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

James Hook gets Gloucester underway. It comes straight back and the hosts look to build.

  49. Post update

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

As it stands, Saracens will be nudging themselves into second place above Bath on points difference. Gloucester are heading for a third loss in four games.

It's hanging in the balance this one though - and with Sarries' David Strettle missing for the first 10 minutes of the second half, you'd expect the home side to mean business.

  50. Get involved #bbcrugby

Ken Smith: #bbcrugby Glaws season encapsulated in 40 mins. Need to stop wasting opportunities and take our chances.

  51. Post update

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

It's been a game for the last-minute men so far.

Dan Robson, Gloucester's try scorer, was added to the XV moments before kick-off.

And Alex Goode was shifted from full-back to fly-half after the news that Owen Farrell has a minor strain.

Moral of the story? Arrive at parties late - you'll be way cooler and might even leave with a left over six-pack of beer. I think that metaphor works, on some level.

  52. Post update

    Tom Bradshaw

    BBC Sport at Kingsholm

"I suspect that Gloucester will need more than the odd moment of brilliance if they're to end their poor home run. Dan Robson's try was a thing of beauty, but James Hook needs to start kicking his goals and Gloucester need to protect the ball better in the Sarries 22.

"For their part, Saracens need to smarten up their act at the breakdown, otherwise they could quickly find that they have another player joining David Strettle in the bin."

  53. Get involved #bbcrugby

Come on then, let's hear it. What did you make of Dan Robson's try? Rating out of 10? I'd give it an eight all day long.

Gloucester fans, sad he's leaving in the summer?

And what about Saracens? They're winning, without really doing too much.

Tweet us your thoughts using #bbcrugby

  54. Half-time

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

James Hook lives up to his name by hooking the penalty wide. That's a minute or two after he missed the conversion from Dan Robson's try.

His wasted efforts mean Gloucester go into the changing room trailing by two points at half-time.

In all honesty, they should be in front.

  55. Sin-bin (Strettle)

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

JP Doyle warned them, and he's followed through on his promise.

David Strettle knocks on and the referee says it was on purpose. The England wing will be missing for the first 10 minutes of the second half.

  56. Get involved #bbcrugby

Adam: What a try from Robson!! Good signing for Wasps #bbcrugby

  57. Try (Robson, missed con Hook)

    Gloucester 11-13 Saracens

    Dan Robson

Oh, this is special. Super special.

Dan Robson only found out he was playing a few minutes before kick-off, when Greig Laidaw pulled out with injury.

And he's just dinked a box kick over the Saracens back line, into the corner, and scampered on to it just in the nick of time to get a hand on to it.

He won't be a Gloucester player next season by the way, as he confirmed this week he will be heading to Wasps in the summer.

  58. Post update

    Gloucester 6-13 Saracens

Billy Vunipola is penalised at the breakdown this time. That's the cue for JP Doyle to tell Sarries skipper Kelly Brown that he is close to seeing a team-mate go to the sin-bin.

  59. Post update

    Chris Jones

BBC Radio 5 live reporter at Kingsholm

"Alex Goode is used to stepping up to fly-half at late notice. At Bath last season he was man of the match after Charlie Hodgson pulled out 10 minutes ahead of kick-off - and he's looking similarly assured this evening."

  60. Missed Penalty (Hook)

    Gloucester 6-13 Saracens

It might be one of those nights for the Cherry and Whites.

Jim Hamilton doesn't roll away, so James Hook lines up his third penalty of the game. It strikes the inside of the post and comes back out. Unlucky.

  61. Post update

    Gloucester 6-13 Saracens

Have I mentioned that Gloucester have been wasteful?

They're at it again. They have a line-out right by the Sarries try-line and it ends up in the hands of a visiting player. The crowd are getting a little bit miffed now.

  62. Penalty (Goode)

    Gloucester 6-13 Saracens

Nicely taken penalty this one from Alex Goode. The wind knocks the ball off the tee, so Kelly Brown has to get on his belly and stick a finger on top of it.

It means Goode has to rush, but doesn't panic and puts it through the sticks.

  63. Post update

    Gloucester 6-10 Saracens

Billy Twelvetrees, who is not pulling up any trees tonight, has his kick charged down. Rough 25 minutes for the England centre.

Saracens don't manage to profit though.

  64. Penalty (Goode)

    Gloucester 6-10 Saracens

    Alex Goode

Finally Saracens see a bit of the ball, and go through 12 phases don't you know.

Gloucester infringe at the breakdown and Alex Goode does his bit with the boot. Two from two for the versatile back - who needs Owen Farrell?

  65. Penalty (Hook)

    Gloucester 6-7 Saracens

Despite their profligacy, Gloucester get another go from the tee and James Hook, who was on the rampage a few moments ago, snaffles his second three-pointer within a couple of minutes.

  66. Post update

    Gloucester 3-7 Saracens

Gloucester are turning the pressure cooker up to whatever the highest setting is on a pressure cooker.

Saracens are chasing shadows as waves of Gloucester attacks come. But the visitors are just - just - about surviving.

  67. Post update

    Tom Bradshaw

    BBC Sport at Kingsholm

"There are those who aren't persuaded of the wisdom of playing Charlie Sharples at full-back - former Kingsholm back James Simpson-Daniel included. But Sharples, normally a winger, is looking Gloucester's sharpest weapon at the moment, cutting some nice lines from deep."

  68. Penalty (Hook)

    Gloucester 3-7 Saracens

After all the head scratching over how Gloucester did not score, the home side have a penalty. James Hook nails it. Should have been at least five points though, not three.

  69. Post update

    Chris Jones

BBC Radio 5 live reporter at Kingsholm

"There was an exasperated gasp from the Kingsholm faithful when that missed chance came up on the big screens..."

  70. Post update

    Gloucester 0-7 Saracens

Oh Billy Billy Billy. Saracens mess up a clearance and Billy Twelvetrees just needs to slip in Jonny May for a certain try. But the England centre dawdles and is caught by Richard Wigglesworth.

  71. Post update

    Gloucester 0-7 Saracens

Just struggling to find a rhythm are Gloucester. Line-out goes long, and when Charlie Sharples makes some yards the ball squirms out of play. Frustrating.

  72. Post update

    Gloucester 0-7 Saracens

Gloucester are responding. Ben Ransom is caught in possession by David Halaifonua and gives away the penalty. Home side's turn to go to the corner.

  74. Try (penalty, con Goode)

    Gloucester 0-7 Saracens

    Penalty try

Saracens get another bite at a line-out and this time work the catch and drive. They get all the way to the line, but don't touch it down. Referee JP Doyle reckons Gloucester have held it up though and awards the penalty try.

Alex Goode puts his first attempt at goal between the posts for the extras.

  75. Post update

    Gloucester 0-0 Saracens

Gloucester a little too keen at the breakdown, and Saracens stick a penalty out for an attacking line-out. A chance to work an opening for the visitors.

  76. Post update

    Gloucester 0-0 Saracens

A bright start this from the home side. They're finding a bit of space, but Saracens win the first scrum of the night.

  77. Post update

    Gloucester 0-0 Saracens

Billy Twelvetrees puts a lovely kick into the corner and Saracens are dealt an early line-out deep in their own territory.

  78. Post update

    Chris Jones

BBC Radio 5 live reporter at Kingsholm

"Despite taking part in the warm-up, Gloucester scrum-half Greig Laidlaw has just pulled out because of the virus which has already struck down Tom Palmer. Dan Robson therefore gets a rare start at number nine - in the week his move to Wasps at the end of the season was confirmed."

  79. Kick-off

    Gloucester 0-0 Saracens

Alex Goode of Saracens, in for Owen Farrell, gets us underway and Gloucester take the ball. We're underway.

  80. Line-ups

Gloucester: Sharples; Halaifonua, Atkinson, Twelvetrees (capt), May; Hook, Robson; Wood, Dawidiuk, Afoa; Savage, Stooke; Kalamafoni, Kvesic, Morgan.

Replacements: Hibbard, Thomas, Knight, Hicks, Evans, Braley, Burns, Meakes.

Saracens: Ransom; Ashton, Bosch, Taylor, Strettle; Goode, Wigglesworth; M. Vunipola, George, Du Plessis; Kruis, Hamilton; Brown (capt), Burger, B. Vunipola.

Replacements: Sharman, Gill, Johnston, Itoje, Joubert, De Kock, Tompkins, Streather.

  81. Laidlaw out

Even more late team news. Greig Laidlaw is pulled out of the Gloucester line-up, so Dan Robson is elevated from the bench.

    Head-to-head

    Saracens v Gloucester

Saracens registered a reasonably comfortable 28-21 win when the sides met in October.

In fact, Gloucester haven't beat Sarries in any of their last three Premiership meetings, with their last win a 28-23 success at Kingsholm in April 2013.

    Gloucester players celebrating

It feels like this is a pivotal moment in Gloucester's season too. Their results have been all over the shop so far.

Last week's win over Exeter, a first victory in three games, could - could - be the start of something for the club down in 9th in the table.

Director of rugby David Humphreys said: "It was an important win from a morale point of view, and gets the New Year off to a winning start. With 10 games still to go it gives us a bit of enthusiasm and encouragement going into this next phase of games.

"There's been a bit of a buzz about training this week, but also a note of reality because Saracens are coming to Kingsholm and, over the course of the past few seasons, they've shown themselves to be one of the top teams. Our record against the top teams hasn't been great this season so it's a big opportunity."

  84. Post update

    Sarries on the up

    Petrus du Plessis

Big game this for Saracens. A win would put them second, above Bath on points difference, with the Rec side set to host Wasps on Saturday.

Mark McCall's men seemed to suffering a hangover from their Premiership and Heineken Cup final defeats, but are now back on tract with three successive wins.

"It will definitely be a game we have to be on our toes the whole time, but we pride ourselves on our defensive structure and we have the right players to deal with them," said prop Petrus du Plessis.

"If our set-piece can function well then we will get front-foot ball. We've also been working hard not to give silly penalties away and correcting that side of things."

    Gloucester team news

    Jonny May

There's also a late switch for Gloucester, who were initially supposed to be unchanged from the XV that started the 26-25 win at Exeter.

Tom Palmer is unwell so Elliot Stooke starts at lock.

There are also a couple of noteworthy appearances, as hooker Darren Dawidiuk and England wing Jonny May make their 100th appearances for the Cherry and Whites.

Congratulations boys on being a ton up.

    Saracens team news

    Owen Farrell

Let's get straight down to some team news, as there's been a bit of shuffling around on both sides.

The most notable change is Owen Farrell's late withdrawal. The England number 10 has a "minor strain", so Alex Goode moves forward to fly-half and Ben Ransom slots in at full-back.

It doesn't sound like a bad one for Farrell, but Stuart Lancaster might well be on the blower to find out if the stand-off will be fighting fit for the Six Nations.
