Is this the last time that Stuart Lancaster walks down the tunnel as England boss? Time will tell. But what is certain is that the hosts have waved goodbye to their own World Cup party.

Australia, Wales, South Africa, Scotland, New Zealand, Argentina, Ireland and France are the eight revellers left standing, as England shuffle out of the side door.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster: "The second half performance was the sort of performance I was after. Uruguay took some breaking down but we managed that and scored some good tries.

"Overall we put some good shapes together, our attack was cohesive and the younger players put their hands up for the future."

On his own future: "It is not just on my mind, there are a lot of other people who will have a say. It has been a tough week, I just wanted to get through the week and get a good win."

England scrum-half Danny Care speaking to ITV: "It was not the circumstances I would have liked to make my first appearance of the tournament, but I thought the fans were great from the moment we stepped off the coach and we wanted to put a few smiles on people’s faces. We owed the fans and ourselves a big performance. Fair play to Uruguay, they were a physical side, but it was nice to get a performance under our belts.

"We knew we had to finish on a high. People are disappointed, none more than the players in the dressing room and all we could do was throw it around out there so I thought that was tremendous."

England hat-trick hero Jack Nowell on ITV: "We had a bit of fun towards the end, and I felt a bit sorry for Anthony Watson because I went over to his wing and scored two tries! The big thing for us today was to enjoy the game and go out on a positive.

"It was a big team effort and we wanted to give the fans something to smile about."

Hindsight is a brilliant thing, but if England had opted for that penalty in the dying minutes of the Wales game and secured a draw then after today's results they would be celebrating a quarter-final spot. Wonder if that decision will be on the minds of Stuart Lancaster and Chris Robshaw when they go to sleep tonight?

Little expression from Stuart Lancaster though as the camera pans on the beleaguered England boss. He knows he faces a tough few weeks ahead. No wonder he wants to go on holiday, to somewhere remote and lacking mobile phone reception, as soon as possible.

    Penalty try, con Ford

Time for one last England try? They want one. England attempt to run the ball from deep through Jonathan Joseph, but the tiring Uruguayans manage to scramble back.

England have the momentum as George Ford is held short, But wait! Uruguay were offside when the tackle came in - penalty try. Ford picks himself up to knock over the extras - his first conversion - from in front of the posts.

Hat-trick hero Jack Nowell has run 122m against Uruguay, a fifth of his team's total 560m.

But he is pipped to the man of the match award by England's other hat-trick hero...veteran number eight Nick Easter. He manages a smirk as he hears his name announced over the PA system.

"I want to be so positive for this England side. Give it four years and they could be very special. I am frustrated because I've seen quick-thinking from Ford and Slade making a very difficult two-on-one look very simple."

Jack Nowell, missed con George Ford

England are purring. Yes, yes, I know it's only Uruguay. But you can only beat the opposition in front of you...it's a positive performance from England's young guns...etc, etc. They go out to the right flank again, a smart offload from Jonathan Joseph puts in Henry Slade, who draws in the Uruguay full-back before timing his pass to Jack Nowell to perfection. Nowell does the rest - and that's his hat-trick.
