George Cullen - a man who was rejected entry to Cambridge - has the chance to put Oxford back in front from the tee with a kick from about 40 metres.

But it bends away from the posts at the last second. It was a very difficult kick to be fair.

Oxford win the ball back and have their first period of possession in the opposition half, but Don Stevens, who has been substituted with injury in his last two Varsity matches, clears a kick through.

On the showing of this match so far, things won't be as easy for Oxford as it was last year, when they won 43-6 - a record-winning margin in 133 Varsity matches.

The Dark Blues, though, have a line-out deep in Cambridge's half but it's overthrown and lost.

Stevens, who has reverted to number nine after playing fly-half in the previous two Varsitys, puts his side level with a kick that was never in doubt of going over.

Cambridge are pressing hard, and full-back Simon Davies almost gets through down the left-hand side after Sam Farmer's cheeky offload but three men haul him down.

In the end though, the Light Blues win a penalty, which captain Don Stevens will take.

Soon-to-be Harlequins centre Jamie Roberts offloads to Sam Farmer, but the Cambridge flanker is held up and eventually the Dark Blues win a penalty.

It's been a familiar pattern for the game.

Oxford may have held on to their lead, but Cambridge's pack looked thoroughly dangerous - they must have pushed about 20 metres forward but the backs couldn't find a gap in the defence.

Cambridge immediately try to get back into the game and push and push and push some more. They are so close to the line but desperate Oxford defence keeps them out before the Dark Blues are awarded a scrum.

Oxford are first to get on the board after Cambridge forward James Kilroe is penalised for a dangerous tackle around 40 yards from the posts.

After starting on the back foot, Oxford have felt their way into the match. It must be rather scary knowing that the opposition have one of Britain's best rugby players.

Cambridge's line-out is poor and the ball is back in the hands of the dark blues, who kick long. Tom Stileman then does brilliantly to push Ilia Cherezov out of play to earn his side a throw, but Oxford lose it.

Oxford get possession for the first time in the game and Georgia sevens player Matt Janney gets hold of a kick and rush, but gives away a penalty which Cambridge kick into the corner for a line-out.

Oxford, whose nominated captain George Messum was classed as ineligible for the match because of his course, have now lost their stand-in skipper early on, after Henry Lamont goes off with injury. Ed David comes on in his place at centre.
