The captain is supposed to cycle around everyone's house to tell them that they've been picked... But I was in London, so I got a phone call instead.

  7. Will the real Mike Phillips please stand up?published at 14:24

    Oxford v Cambridge (14:30 GMT)

If you look at the Cambridge University line-up, you'd be forgiven for thinking they had two Wales stars on their team.

But the Mike Phillips on the light blues' bench is not the Racing 92 scrum-half, but a second-year medicine student at Emmanuel College who is their back-up centre.

He could join Jamie Roberts in the centres later in the game - a man who sat down with Scrum V to look forward to the match.

Don Stevens will captain Cambridge University from his favourite position of scrum-half having featured at number 10 in the last two Varsity Matches.

The 28-year-old will be hoping it's third time lucky for him at Twickenham, after lasting only 30 minutes in 2013 before dislocating his shoulder, and then 42 minutes last year before rupturing knee ligaments.

Andrew captained his side against an Oxford team skippered by another Lions star, Stuart Barnes, who had earlier played in conditions pictured below in 1981. It must have been like trying to catch a large snowball...

Current Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys also wore dark blue, while former Lions captain Gavin Hastings also wore the light blue of Cambridge before being inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Down the years there have been some pretty famous players to have donned a shade of blue and feature in the Varsity match.

England and British and Irish Lions fly-half Rob Andrew is one of them when he was a student St John's College, Cambridge, before going on to play for Nottingham, Wasps and Newcastle and is now professional rugby director at the RFU.

Fun Fact Time: Andrew was also a handy cricketer, playing 17 first-class matches for the university during his studies.

Roberts' side haven't had the best of times during the last few years.

The dark blues of Oxford are seeking to become the first team in the match's history to triumph on six consecutive occasions - quite something given Queen Victoria still had 29 years left on the throne when the game was first played.

But the holders will be without nominated captain George Messum, after his history of art course was deemed ineligible for the match.

Henry Lamont skippers the side in his place - while prop Lewis Anderson has played in all five of Oxford's recent wins.

For the 134th Oxford v Cambridge Varsity match, rugby union fans across the globe will be able to recognise the familiar figure of Wales and British and Irish Lions star Jamie Roberts.

The 29-year-old starts at centre for the light blues of Cambridge University, where he is studying for a masters in medical science, having already qualified as a doctor.

Some people are just far too good at everything...

That barely scratches the surface of the illustrious alumni of both universities, a backdrop of history any sporting representatives has to deal with.

And today at Twickenham, there'll be another familiar face on show as the two stalwarts of world academia clash.
