There is a bit more adventure about this Wales side than in previous incarnations.

Taulupe Faletau shows some smart feet to make yards before off-loading on the Ireland 22 metre line.

He is surely the lead candidate to be Lions number eight in 2017...

"I was disappointed with Wales in the first half hour but they have stayed in the game. Ireland played fantastically well for long periods of that first half but Wales have worked their way back into it.

"The one concern that Ireland will have is their ability to defend out wide. Wales have made 20, 30 or 40 yards quite consistently and they will be looking to do that more.

"Ireland have placed with pace and intensity but it's still anybody's game."

Pre-planned move or a Taulupe Faletau's quick thinking making a silk purse out of a sow's ear?

You be the judge. But I think it is the latter.

The Wales number eight's try is available to view below.

Sophia Bryant: This game is so up and down. Shame for Wales but that's life, it's now up to them to do the best with what they have.

Rhys Priestland's first touch might have been a stone-cold fumble with his mitts, but the Wales replacement fly-half's boot is as warm as freshly-made toast.

Two chances with the boot have both been struck sweetly by Priestland (shown by the green arrows), with the injured Dan Biggar's earlier effort missing the sticks (red arrow).

Wales could have been level if Biggar had popped that one over from near the touchline.

"Ireland's back-row have not read the script, and at times made Wales look pedestrian.

"But the players ran off at half-time to a subdued ovation after Wales somehow clawed themselves back in to it after a disastrous opening half hour.

    "It's all to play for."

Sam Warburton gives Gareth Davies the nod to boot the ball into touch.

Wales head back down the tunnel for some isotonic and Gatland wisdom.

Joe Schmidt will have to work out how his men have only three-point lead to show for their early dominance and momentum.

A half of two halves then.

Ireland out of the blocks faster, Wales coming on strong in the final 15 minutes.

And the men in red finish on a high as Sam Warburton clamps onto opposite number CJ Stander to secure a turnover.

Taulupe Faletau turns a muffed strike into a canny play.

Wales looked set to try and shove the struggling Ireland pack back over their own line, but the ball pops out the back near the open-side flanker's feet.

Faletau spots it first, scooping up and powering over past a startled Ireland back row.

Rhys Priestland adds the extras and Ireland have been pegged back to within three points.

    So close!

Rhys Priestland - with a penalty advantage in his back pocket - clips a precise kick across field.

Liam Williams very nearly claims it, but Simon Zebo does just enought to put him off and the ball dribbles dead.

No matter. Jerome Garces pulls play back and Wales call for a scrum five metres out.

Are Ireland good value for their 10-point advantage? According to the stats, yes. The home side have edged both territory and possession in the opening half an hour.

But Wales are beginning to ask more questions of the Irish defence as we approach the break...
