    Well there you have it!

Two fantastic matches of rugby, with Exeter managing to overcome a half-time deficit at bottom club London Irish to win at the Madejski Stadium.

That loss could prove even more difficult to take after Newcastle's superb display defeated Northampton at Kingston Park.

In the end, the boot of Andy Goode was the difference and they move above Worcester in the table.

Thanks for following today's action with us and have a wonderful evening.

    Newcastle 26-25 Northampton

Northampton come close to a dramatic late try, but a line-out is poor and Newcastle get the ball away for a superb victory at Kingston Park.

They showed they are up for the relegation dogfight here.

    London Irish 15-22 Exeter

London Irish led at the break, but were overpowered by second-placed Exeter Chiefs to slip five-points adrift at the bottom of the table.

A losing bonus point is all the hosts have to show as a second-half Dave Lewis try and five Gareth Steenson penalties piles more misery on the Exiles.

  4. Newcastle 26-25 Northamptonpublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2016

Northampton go ever so close to a superb try down the left-hand side with two minutes to go, but a pass is intercepted at the crucial moment to scupper their chances.

Newcastle then win in a penalty in their own 22. That could be the game.

Newcastle are pinning Northampton in their own 22 here. The Falcons are doing everything they can to earn a valuable victory.

Huge call from Wayne Barnes though, as Newcastle's Simon Hammersley knocks the ball on and Ben Foden grabs it and appears to have a free run, but the ref blows his whistle for the infringement.

Foden does not look happy with that.

  6. Penalty (Steenson)published at 16:50

    London Irish 15-22 Exeter

It has been an energy-sapping second-half spent mostly in defence.

And if there was ever a moment to highlight the fact, it's their pack being out muscle at scrum time.

Gareth Steenson tees up and splits the sticks for Exeter. The ask has just got bigger for London Irish.

  7. London Irish 15-19 Exeterpublished at 16:47

Right, there is less than 10 minutes remaining and London Irish are back to full strength with Ian Nagle's time in the sin-bin up.

Can the Exiles upset the high-flying Chiefs? There is still time.

I don't think you can call which way this game will go now. Northampton Saints have made some smart changes, bringing on JJ Hanrahan and George Pisi, while Lee Dickson has put in a captain's performance.

The latter is replaced by Tom Kessell, presumably pretty darn tired from his efforts.

  9. London Irish 15-19 Exeterpublished at 16:42

Topsy Ojo's try has put London Irish right back into this contest and in a big way, is also keeping the Exiles' hopes of surviving the drop alive.

Still, there is a lot to do in the final 13 minutes but an Exiles side that was flagging moments ago now looks revived.

  10. try

Try (Dickson, con Hanrahan)published at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2016

    Newcastle 26-25 Northampton

We have a one-point game at Kingston Park now as Lee Dickson gets the ball down under a pile of bodies for his second Northampton try of the afternoon.

The decision had to go to the TMO though, before JJ Hanrahan kicks what could be a crucial two points.

  11. Newcastle 26-18 Northamptonpublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2016

Cripes, that was a close one for the physios...

Tom Wood and his Northampton Saints team-mates were running hard towards the line, but two Newcastle players were receiving treatment, and instead of ramming into them, play is called back for a scrum.

Can you imagine what the physios were thinking with those huge men running at them?

  12. try

    Try (Ojo)published at 16:36

    London Irish 15-19 Exeter

He breaks away from the break down and in a flash Topsy Ojo is in space.

While the cover defence from Exeter do a fine job to close the space, the London Irish winger has enough in the tank to finish the near length-of-the-field try.

The referee goes to the video to study how Ojo came up with the ball, but the try stands.

  13. Newcastle 26-18 Northamptonpublished at 16:37 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2016

The game is going through a little bit of a lull, but Northampton's JJ Hanrahan has the chance to kick for goal, but decides to go for touch. Saints are very much going for broke.

  14. Penalty (Steenson)published at 16:34

    London Irish 10-19 Exeter

London Irish replacement lock Ian Nagle is yellow carded after reaching in to bat down a pass. It was deemed deliberate interference and he earns 10 minutes in the sin-bin.

Gareth Steenson punishes the hosts with another penalty.

  15. Newcastle 26-18 Northamptonpublished at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2016

Northampton Saints are desperate to get back into the game, and there was a slight bit of panic from JJ Hanrahan, who attempts a drop kick but wildy skews it.

I don't think Jim Mallinder will be too happy with that decision, but they just seemed to run out of options.

  16. London Irish 10-16 Exeterpublished at 16:31

London Irish defend 17 phases and Exeter fall just short.

Exeter's Olly Woodburn attempted to reach over in the right corner, but he fails to ground the ball. And despite looking as if he was taken into touch, the ball remains alive in Exeter hands.

Eventually, pressure is relieved and the Exiles have a line-out midway in their half.

  17. London Irish 10-16 Exeterpublished at 16:29

London Irish are making a double change with both props Halani Aulika and Tom Smallbone going off.

Leo Halavatau and Tom Court join the action. Fresh bodies in the pack to add energy at the breakdown.

  18. Newcastle 26-18 Northamptonpublished at 16:27

After that Northampton try, Newcastle have shored up their side and have the territory in the opposition half.

It's been a proper struggle for Northampton Saints to get any sort of rhythm going with the ball.

  19. try

Try (Lewis, con Steenson)published at 16:22

    London Irish 10-16 Exeter

Exeter replacement Dave Lewis throws a dummy and scampers over to put the visitors ahead for the first time.

He was in the action for just moments, having come on for Will Chudley.

The try was reward for a period of Exeter dominance.

  20. Penalty (Steenson)published at 16:19

    London Irish 10-9 Exeter

Gareth Steenson with an instant reply for Exeter Chiefs.

From close range and just right of the posts, he slots over easily.
