  2. 'Sale a poor second best'published at 21:45 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    FT: Sale 13-26 Gloucester

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond speaking to BT Sport:

"I think Gloucester played very well - they scored two good tries and they capitalised on our ill-discipline.

"We were a poor second best tonight.

"I just think we're trying to play a bit too much rugby and against a good side like Gloucester you can't do that."

  5. 'Delighted to win'published at 21:33 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    FT: Sale 13-26 Gloucester

Gloucester scrum-half Greig Laidlaw told BT Sport:

"It's always a bit unnerving when you lose the first two, but we got two points on the road last weekend and we're absolutely delighted to win tonight.

"When you play in the Premiership you're always going to be under pressure at times, but we stayed cool.

"We're just hammering it in training - we've gone back to basics this year - we're testing ourselves, so there are always going to be mistakes, but we're going to keep backing ourselves."

The visitors have the scrum and Henry Purdy kicks out of play.

Slowly but surely Gloucester took the game away from their hosts as the second half wore on.

In the end it was a comfortable victory for the Cherry and Whites, while Sale have extra worries at fly-half with Dan Mugford seemingly joining AJ MacGinty on the treatment table.

    Sale 13-26 Gloucester

The sides have had two tries apiece and Sale have had their share of the ball, but Gloucester have had the edge in almost every other department.

It can't have been easy to come here off the back of two defeats at the start of the season, but the Cherry and Whites look like leaving this match with four points.

  8. Penalty (Laidlaw)published at 75 mins

    Sale 13-26 Gloucester

The Sharks are beginning to let their frustrations get the better of them.

Captain Josh Beaumont is penalised for a high tackle on Gloucester replacement Billy Twelvetrees.

You know what happens next? Yep, you guessed it.

Greig Laidlaw puts the penalty over and Sale now have a mountain to climb.

    Sale 13-23 Gloucester

As things stand, this man has been the difference for the away side this evening.

While Sale have had their fly-half Dan Mugford injured with a lack of suitable replacements, Greig Laidlaw has put on a kicking masterclass for Gloucester.

He hasn't missed a thing tonight.

    Sale 13-23 Gloucester

    ...And again.

Gloucester replacement Jacob Rowan is clever to win the penalty this time, and that points machine Greig Laidlaw does the rest, slotting over with consummate ease.

Sale are now two scores from victory (gulp).

  11. Penalty (Laidlaw)published at 65 mins

    Sale 13-20 Gloucester

Gloucester are blessed with more internationals than their hosts, and with that comes experience and know-how.

Sale give away a penalty for holding around the neck and Greig Laidlaw shows his class to kick the three points.

This picture probably just about sums up the game.

Gloucester ahead, but under heavy pressure from Sale as the visitors desperately search for their first win of the Premiership season.

    Less than 20 minutes left.

    Sale 13-17 Gloucester

The scoreline may still be against them, and memories of last season's Gloucester win here, but I make Sale favourites now.

The Sharks have that near-impeccable home record and seem to be hunting down the Cherry and Whites as if they were their prey.

  14. try

Try (Neild, conversion missed)published at 55 mins

    Sale 13-17 Gloucester

If you're struggling to play your rugby at its fluid best, you can always rely on your driving maul.

That was very much the Sale attitude, as they finally get reward for their dominance with a try - Cameron Neild putting the ball down.

Makeshift kicker Will Addison misses the kick, showing the importance of a fly-half.

The injured Dan Mugford is finally replaced by the Sharks.

"Gloucester are defending the maul well tonight, it's one of Sale's big weapons."

    Sale 8-17 Gloucester

It's a frustrating watch even for me as a neutral, so I can only wonder how flustered Sale fans are getting.

Once again the hosts have ball in a threatening position, but Gloucester stay strong and turnover.

Steve Diamond shakes his head in disbelief.

Sale are trying to make something happen but are forcing things somewhat.

As I say that, Gloucester are penalised and the hosts kick to the corner as they go in search of a try.

This Dan Mugford injury saga continues to run.

The inexperienced fly-half has been limping about all game and has been unsuccessful with his two kicks for goal, but the lack of a number 10 on the Sale bench is making them hesitant to take him off.

Will the home side end up regretting this?

  19. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Sale 8-17 Gloucester

The hosts have started the second half with purpose, territory and possession.

However, Sale captain Josh Beaumont is given a ticking off as his team-mates continue to contest the referee's decisions.

Aptly enough, Sharks head coach Steve Diamond is then seen moaning himself from the stands.

  20. Kick-offpublished at 41 mins

    Sale 8-17 Gloucester

    We're back underway in Salford.

So far this season Gloucester have blown a 24-point lead to lose and come from behind to draw - how will they cope being in-front this week?

Sale's only Premiership loss at home in the last 17 months was against the Cherry and Whites - they'll undoubtedly be doing their utmost to ensure it doesn't happen again.
