    HT: Sale 8-17 Gloucester

He was awarded Sale's young player of the year award after a breakthrough campaign last season, and 22-year-old Sam Jones has certainly made his mark tonight.

His try adds to the seven he scored last season - if he shows that instinct on the wing more often I'm sure he'll get similar numbers, if not better, this term.

  3. Hitting the books with Sarriespublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    HT: Sale 8-17 Gloucester

Books. Check. Pencil. Check. Scum cap, mouth guard, boots... um, check.

In a rare mix of sport and academics, Premiership champions and European Cup holders Saracens will run one of a new wave free schools approved to open in England.

Sarries are among a total of 77 new approved state-funded schools, run by academy trusts, community groups, parents and teachers, say ministers.

Saracens High School, a new secondary for north London, is the result of a partnership between the club and another local school, Ashmole Academy, says the Department for Education.

It is very much a redefinition of school of hard knocks as they aim to combine academic achievement with sporting success and teamwork.

  4. Half-timepublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Sale 8-17 Gloucester

What a great time to score.

The Cherry and Whites start and finish the half as the better side, scoring a try in each period of dominance.

Sale probably had the better of the middle bit, but a mixture of handling errors and strong defence prevented them from putting a real dent in Gloucester.

  5. try

Well that was smash and grab from the visitors, but they won't care one bit.

New Zealander Tom Marshall shows vision, composure and skill to chip through to Charlie Sharples, who dots down for Gloucester.

  7. Penalty (Addison)published at 35 mins

    Sale 8-10 Gloucester

Something's clearly up with Sale Sharks playmaker Dan Mugford, as when the hosts win yet another penalty, it's winger Will Addison who steps into the breach.

Judging by that effort, he'll retaining kicking duties as he finds the middle of the posts.

Sale have definitely had the upper hand for the last 10 minutes, but need to be more clinical in attack.

  8. Postpublished at 31 mins

    Sale 5-10 Gloucester

This one's ebbing and flowing, but it has the feel of a game which will be decided by fine margins - after all this match finished 12-11 to Gloucester last season.

Meanwhile England international flanker Matt Kvesic has spent time off the pitch with a head injury, but returns 12 stitches later for the Cherry and Whites.

    Ouch!

  9. Missed penaltypublished at 27 mins

    Sale 5-10 Gloucester

Gloucester are penalised for being offside, and Dan Mugford goes for the posts from all of 44 metres.

In hindsight it was a poor decision as the fly-half's kick lacks power and Sharks miss the opportunity to close the deficit.

  10. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Sale 5-10 Gloucester

The home side are finding their feet and earn a penalty after some free-flowing rugby, opting to kick to the corner.

Pressure is built and a try seems in the offing, but Gloucester defend strongly and repel Sale's famous driving maul by winning a penalty.

    Sale 5-10 Gloucester

We're midway through the first half.

Gloucester have been the better side overall but turned off after the opening score, allowing Sale a try of their own.

However, the boot of scrum-half Greig Laidlaw has been reliable as always, and to the relief of Cherry and Whites head coach Laurie Fisher, they have the lead they deserve.

  12. Penalty (Laidlaw)published at 16 mins

    Sale 5-10 Gloucester

Sharks hooker Neil Briggs is penalised for not rolling away, and Greig Laidlaw points to the posts.

The kick is from some distance, but the Scotsman hits a looping effort, with pinpoint accuracy and just enough legs to go over.

Cherry and White nerves are settled.

"Very bright play from Sale. It's bright play from both sides and it's a really entertaining game so far."

  14. try

Try (James, conversion missed)published at 13 mins

    Sale 5-7 Gloucester

    Sale hit back very quickly.

A decoy run creates space on the outside and Sam James shows both good hands and bravery on the right touchline, taking the tackle and diving over the line.

It was a difficult conversion for Dan Mugford, who still hasn't got over his earlier niggle, and his kick misses the posts.

    Sale 0-7 Gloucester

    Nigel Yates
former Sale centre on BBC Radio Manchester

"I think he did more than trundle over there, that is a tight-head prop being up there with the outside half when he made the break, supporting him and timing his run so the pass wasn't forward. He then moved very rapidly to the line.  A really good score for Gloucester.

"Sale won't be happy with the tackling."

    Sale 0-7 Gloucester

    Well, it was coming.

Billy Burns broke through the line superbly, looked up and saw prop John Afoa to his right, who did the rest.

It's a first try in around two years for the former New Zealand international.

Greig Laidlaw has the simple task of adding the extras from in-front of the posts.

    Sale 0-0 Gloucester

Sale still struggling to get into his game on home turf.

They've lost just one league game here since April 2015, but a handling error by Will Addison results in a Gloucester scrum.

Food for thought for Sharks head coach Steve Diamond at this early stage.

    Sale 0-0 Gloucester

The visitors have started the stronger here at the AJ Bell Stadium.

They're one of four sides yet to win in the Premiership this season, so have that extra motivation.

Meanwhile, Sale fly-half Dan Mugford is limping - he was their matchwinner last time out, so let's hope that's nothing too serious.
