He's just taken him out. He doesn't mean it, but he's taken him out. With the law as they are at the moment it has to be a yellow card.

After a lengthy discussion with the TMO referee Tom Foley deems that Ian Whitten isn't in a position to catch the ball as he collides with Ryan Edwards. As a result the Exeter man heads for an early break and 10 minutes in the sin bin.

  3. Lucky bounce!?published at 12 mins

    Bristol 0-7 Exeter

After the start to their season Bristol need a bit of luck and their full-back Jordan Williams kicks forward and the bounce of the oval ball out foxes Exeter's Henry Slade.

It pins the Chiefs back but as the visitors clear their lines Ian Whitten collides with Ryan Edwards and we're heading to the television match official for another look.

After little early ball the home side are enjoying a spot of possession but they're finding it difficult to punch holes through the white wall that is Exeter Chiefs' defensive line.

  5. 'Bristol need to slow it down'published at 3 mins

    Bristol 0-5 Exeter

    Quote Message

That's hugely disappointing. The Chiefs got quick ball and played at their own pace. If Bristol are going to control this game tonight we're going to have to slow that ball down. If they play at that speed it will be very difficult to defend.

Try (Woodburn, con Steenson)published at 2 mins

    Bristol 0-7 Exeter

It's a dream start for the Exeter Chiefs and a nightmare for Bristol.

The visitors whipped the ball wide and in two passes found Olly Woodburn. The Exeter winger strolled in for a very easy score and Gareth Steenson added the conversion with ease.

    That's how you do it!

  7. Postpublished at 1 min

    Bristol 0-0 Exeter

There are only 57 seconds on the clock but we've an early breather as Bristol's Tom Vardnell collided with Exeter's Henry Slade and the home player is just receiving a spot of treatment.

This week Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has placed a big focus on ensuring that his side take the right mindset to Ashton Gate he shared with BBC Radio Devon.

"They're our nearest Premiership side," he said. "That should make it a big game for us, but the big thing I keep pushing with the lads is that it's a Premiership game of rugby, and because it's a Premiership game of rugby it's a big game.

"Any time you win a game of Premiership rugby you've done pretty well, whether that's home or away,

"I'm not massively bothered about the style of play or points on the board, I want to see players who want to turn up there and play a big tough game of rugby."

Bristol Rugby backs coach Dwayne Peel knows that his side will need to show plenty of heart and resilience tonight in front of their home fans, having been defeated by Harlequins, Northampton and Wasps in their opening three games.

"We've played three top teams so far. There's excitement in the camp and a bit of frustration," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"We have to learn our lessons, lick our wounds, move on and put pride back in the shirt in front of our home support.

"It's always a brilliant atmosphere at Ashton Gate when it is close to being full."

Exeter head coach Rob Baxter has chosen to change his winning round three formula by bringing in Alec Hepburn, Mitch Lees and Dave Dennis into the pack, with the latter making his first start for the club after his summer move from the NSW Waratahs.

In the backline there’s just one change as Sam Hill is promoted from the bench at the expense of Ollie Devoto and partners Henry Slade in midfield.

  15. We meet again...published at 19:36 British Summer Time 23 September 2016

Here's a little fact for you... the last time that these two met former Manchester United and Wales winger Ryan Giggs was the current holder of BBC Sports Personality of the Year!

The date was 26 May 2010 and it was the final leg of the Championship play-off. On that day Exeter secured promotion to the Premiership and the two haven't met since.

Needless to say tonight the visitors will be looking to show that six years of Premiership experience counts against their local rivals.

  16. All aboard the Premiership weekendpublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 23 September 2016

    Bristol v Exeter (19:45 BST)

We've got more rugby union than you can shake a stick at this weekend and that includes a London derby between Harlequins and Saracens and a Midlands clash between Northampton Saints and Wasps.

For now let's park the other fixtures and concentrate on the Friday night lights at Ashton Gate with Bristol hosting Exeter Chiefs.

  17. Bounce back or press on?published at 19:32 British Summer Time 23 September 2016

    Bristol v Exeter (19:45 BST)

It's fair to say both sides are heading into this one off the back of hugely contrasting previous weekends.

Bristol were taught a lesson in Premiership Rugby at the Ricoh Arena as they shipped 10 tries and lost 70-22 to Wasps.

Meanwhile, Exeter finally got themselves off the mark with a bonus-point win at Sandy Park against Harlequins that included an impressive hat-trick from Luke Cowan-Dickie.

Will we see the greatest of comebacks tonight or the Chiefs pressing on in style?

They say that inspiration often comes from home soil and tonight hosts Bristol need to take their lead from a well-known local band.

We’d guess that Massive Attack’s music may not be blasting in the home changing room, but the hosts need to channel their own attack and ensure they don’t end up seeing "Teardrops" against Exeter tonight.

It's going to be a tough ask for Andy Robinson's men after a 70-22 loss last weekend against Wasps, but the Chiefs have already been defeated twice this season.
