Worcester 12-26 Wasps; Newcastle 38-32 Harlequins

Two highly competitive Premiership matches, with plenty of action and every player leaving the pitch with nothing left in the tank.

Wasps join Saracens and Bath on eight victories from 10, while Newcastle have shot up the table with their impressive triumph.

Thanks for staying with us throughout it all - the next round of fixtures will mark the halfway point of the league season, believe it or not.

A weakened Wasps side climbed back to within a point of Premiership leaders Saracens thanks to a determined win at relegation-threatened Worcester.

Brendan Macken's converted try after just 54 seconds set Wasps on their way.

Stand-in fly-half Rob Miller then also converted scrum-half Dan Robson's 45th minute try to give Wasps control.

But the rest of a competitive Midlands derby was a kicking contest between Miller and Jamie Shillcock, who each landed four penalties.

Newcastle ran in six tries as they overcame Harlequins in a lively encounter at Kingston Park.

After Michael Young and Quins' Rob Buchanan traded tries, scores from Juan Pablo Socino and Mark Wilson gave the hosts a 21-8 advantage at the break.

Socino's second extended Newcastle's lead but a brace from Karl Dickson brought Quins to within four points.

Tries from Evan Olmstead and Marcus Watson secured victory, but the visitors grabbed two bonus points with Tim Visser's late converted try.

  4. 'We couldn't get a foothold'published at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    FT: Worcester 12-26 Wasps

Worcester head coach Carl Hogg on BT Sport:

"I thought the endaevour and energy was fantastic within the group.

"There were elements of the game I was really pleased with, but some of our accuracy let us down.

"Our tackle completion was much better - on the whole we were pretty sound defensively, but we couldn't get a foothold in the game as our line-out was malfunctioning."

  5. 'You've got to have a squad'published at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    FT: Worcester 12-26 Wasps

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young on BT Sport:

"I've said all year you don't win things with 23 players, you've got to have a squad.

"A lot of players were waiting for opportunities - I said to them 'put up or shut up', and to be fair to them they've put up.

"We knew that we needed a big start - we knew they'd (Worcester) see this game as a massive opportunity."

    Quote Message

It was a big effort from the whole squad. Worcester really put us under pressure in the second half but I thought we were outstanding defensively. We put down a marker today.

    Worcester 12-26 Wasps

It was a formality for the last 15 minutes or so, but the referee's whistle confirms it after yet another Warriors ends fruitless.

Brendan Macken sprinted clear within the first minute and Dan Robson showed skill to add a second try, while Worcester eventually ran out of ideas against a gutsy Wasps, who were without the injured Danny Cipriani and 15 others.

Dai Young's side are up to second in the Premiership table.

  8. try

Try (Visser, con Jackson)published at 16:48 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    FT: Newcastle 38-32 Harlequins

Tim Visser scores a late consolation for Harlequins right at the death, and allows them to pick up a bonus point for their fourth try of the afternoon.

Ruaridh Jackson adds the extras, so Quins take two points from the match.

With that conversion, full-time is blown at Kingston Park.

    Worcester 12-26 Wasps

Wasps are normally the entertainers - even before this match they'd scored more points in the Premiership than anyone else.

But today they've shown they can win by other means - this has been determined, disciplined and equally as impressive.

On the field, the closing stages look like being reasonably uneventful.

  10. try

Try (Watson, con Delany)published at 16:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    Newcastle 38-25 Harlequins

    That must be it now.

Marcus Watson is the man who grabs it in the corner after latching on to a great grubber kick, and Mike Delany adds the extras.

Just three minutes are left. There is surely too much for Quins to do now.

    Worcester 12-26 Wasps

Wasps are successfully stifling their hosts, strangling any life that would otherwise be left in this match.

They have taken off skipper Matt Mullan, with Ben Harris coming on for his Premiership debut for the side.

If it stays this way Worcester will take positives for sure, but positives don't equal points.

  12. Penalty (Jackson)published at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    Newcastle 31-25 Harlequins

    Or will they?

Ruaridh Jackson takes on a penalty from 15 meters inside the touchline just outside the Falcons 22 and bisects the posts.

The visitors are back to within a converted score of Newcastle.

Just over five minutes left at Kingston Park and it looks like Newcastle will be able to hold on for victory against Harlequins.

Carl Hogg's Worcester side are having all the ball, if not the territory to go with it.

The biggest compliment you could pay Wasps is that they're by no means hanging on to their advantage.

If the home side were to be offered a losing bonus point now, would they take it?

    Worcester 12-26 Wasps

Another free-flowing Worcester attack, another final pass which lacks the necessary quality.

The Warriors are now regularly knocking on the Wasps door but this time Dan Robson, who is a man of the match candidate, does enough to force Josh Adams into a handling error.

The hosts are two converted scores behind, so we're approaching the 'now or never' stage...

    Worcester 12-26 Wasps

Will Worcester live to rue that forward pass?

Winger Cooper Vuna sets off on a fantastic weaving run into Wasps' 22, twisting and turning to make ground.

The ball is moved across the field into a try-scoring position, but the killer pass to Alafoti Faosilva is forward, denying the Samoa international what would have been an important score.

Try (Olmstead, con missed)published at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    Newcastle 31-22 Harlequins

Newcastle hit back with their fifth score of the afternoon.

Evan Olmstead is the man who gets it, after the Falcons spread the play and then the big lock goes over following a line-out.

Will this finally settle it? Just under 15 minutes are left in the north east.

Neither side is really grabbing this game by the scruff of the neck, which obviously suits Wasps as the team that's ahead.

As we move into the last 20 minutes, there's a feeling that Worcester need to take some risks and do something brave if they're to pull this off.

  19. try

Try (Dickson, con Jackson)published at 16:23 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2016

    Newcastle 26-22 Harlequins

Harlequins have their third try of the afternoon and it's Karl Dickson who gets it.

Tim Visser is at the heart of another good passing move from Quins, who take advantage of poor Falcons defending.

Ruaridh Jackson adds the conversion and it's a four-point game.

Less than 20 minutes remain at Kingston Park. The comeback is very much on.

    Worcester 12-26 Wasps

We have a brief interlude as Alapati Leiua receives treatment for a ball to the face from close range - ouch.

As things stand, Wasps will be up into second above Bath - a bonus point would put them level with leaders Saracens.

For Worcester meanwhile, it would leave them well adrift in second bottom - I'm sure news of fellow strugglers Newcastle leading won't be well-received at Sixways.
