Blues 12-10 British and Irish Lions

James Parsons - the Blues hooker - streaks upfield after nicking the ball at the front of the line-out.

The Lions are stretched thin once again.

Jack Nowell sells himself as he bursts out of the line to try and shut down Rieko Ioane and sees the Blues wing skip past him.

Akira Ioane cannot find his man with his offload. If he had that was a try for the hosts.

This is a decisive period in this match. The Lions have a cavalry to introduce off the bench if they survive this onslaught.

Good crash centre work from Robbie Henshaw, as he runs up Stephen Perofeta's channel and makes yards.

He then shows his nous as well.

Catching the ball, with no momentum and not much support, he grubbers a fine kick into the corner.

Augustine Pulu with a lovely no-look round-the-back flick pass to Sonny Bill Williams on the charge.

Real Harlem Globetrotters stuff. Lions under pressure.

But a knock-on from the Blues allows them an escape route.

Time for Gatland's boys to knuckle down. They have been slower out of the blocks after the interval.

Lions fans breath a sigh of relief.

Just a scrap of Rieko Ioane's stud on the touchline, but that is all that it takes.

The Lions wouldn't deserve to trail by seven.

Rieko Ioane bounds into the corner after picking the ball up off his boot straps.

But has Jack Nowell forced him into touch this time?

  7. What did fans make of first half?published at 09:45 British Summer Time 7 June 2017

Lewis and Sam's verdict on the first half is a fairly positive one from the pub in Twickenham, despite the late blow to the Lions. Seven out of 10, so far.

"It's been a good performance from the Lions, but silly penalties have been costly and the Blues have been ruthless," says Sam.

Lewis (left) adds: "There's been a lot more heart from the team, which is what you want to see as a fan. Courtney Lawes and Maro Itoje have been leading the line with some big hits."

Real pressure from the Auckland Blues.

They are a couple of metres from the whitewash...

Matt Duffie is well snagged by Elliot Daly as the Blues winger tries to go around the outside.

The Lions defence has been solid in open play. A bit of indiscipline though at the breakdown and Stephen Perofeta kicks down into the tourists' 22m.

Johnny Sexton is still on in place of Dan Biggar by the way.

We needed to see a greater energy and intent from the Lions after their flat display in last weekend's opening game, and that was plain to see in the first half today.

The half-back and second row combinations have been very good, with the likes of Justin Tipuric, Elliot Daly and Ken Owens also very industrious.

In the second half, as the weather worsens, the Lions need to show a ruthless edge and remain composed. Key messages will be to continue the game management, Increase the line speed (get at Blues 10 Stephen Perofeta!!!) and cut out the poor discipline.

It is not just from this viewing angle that the Lions look better than they did in their tour opener.

A sucker punch right on the half-time whistle from Sonny Bill Williams means the scoreline is an unfair reflection of the first half in my opinion. However, once again it has reiterated the threat that all NZ teams have. You just can't afford to not react, or switch off for a second!

In conditions like those this morning, the bounce of the ball could be the deciding factor. In saying that, for 39 minutes Lions boss Warren Gatland will have been pleased with the intent and style of the Lions in the first half. For the majority of it, the tempo and territory have been controlled by his men.

He will be concerned perhaps at his side's discipline as they have given far too many opportunities to an Auckland team that haven't really produced too much with ball in hand.

However, with the likes of Sonny Bill Williams and Rieko Ioane on the left wing there is always a threat from the hosts.

The ball bounces up in front of the sticks. It's anyone's...Sonny Bill Williams claims that he got downward pressure as a pack of players skid over the line in pursuit of the ball.

But there may have been a knock-on just before.
