The Lions pack bind tight, pump the thighs and bulldoze over from the rolling maul.

Nothing complex about that. But worth just as much as Rieko Ioane's pyrotechnics.

CJ Stander emerges with the try. And Leigh Halfpenny adds the extras.

The Lions are banging on the door.

Having kicked for the corner, they have to get points here.

High tackle on Rhys Webb as he darts for the line. Another penalty.

    To the corner once again...

They are down, but this opening quarter of an hour has been better than the tour opener from the Lions.

Faster phases, more imagination and territorial dominance.

Even James Haskell gets in on the act, chugging through a hole in the Blues defence, making 20 metres.

Penalty Lions. Kickable. And they boot to the corner!

To cheers from the home crowd. This is a match straight out the Super Rugby template.

Lions fans Lewis and Sam have got the morning off work and are all set in the Cabbage Patch pub in Twickenham.Sam's fetching jacket is a stalwart of the 2009 and 2013 Lions tours, and he's hoping for similar fortune after that memorable trip to Australia. "I'd love to tell you what I got up to in it," he says with a knowing smile! The Lions certainly need some luck after that early Blues score.

Dan Biggar is fast out of the blocks at the Blues line-out five metres from their own line.

Too fast. Offside. Penalty Blues and a chance to clear their lines.

That was a shame for the tourists as Courtney Lawes had helped to disrupt the set-piece.

    Close, but no cigar.

Jared Payne is into the corner...

But has he kept all of his limbs off the whitewash before grounding the ball as Stephen Perofeta came across to make the tackle?

"Lovely hands by a front row forward, a superb cut-out pass, and a brilliant finish; New Zealand rugby in a nutshell, right down to the dodgy conversion."

Try - Blues 5-0 British and Irish Lionspublished at 6 mins

    Rieko Ioane

The Lions are pulled from one wing to another as Stephen Perofeta chips a kick to one touchline and then directs play back the other.

Augustine Pulu throws a long mis-pass, Jack Nowell is caught flat-footed and on the inside of Rieko Ioane.

And that means he is toast.

The Blues winger presses the pedal and zooms past the despairing Exeter man and into the corner.

    Perofeta screws the conversion wide.

BBC 5 live rugby union reporter at Eden Park, Auckland

"A lot of focus on Sonny Bill Williams in the build up - and he's pulled off two crucial turnovers in the opening five minutes.

"But some encouraging carries from the Lions forwards early on."

Blues 0-0 British and Irish Lions

    Chance!

    Nope!

The Blues attempt to run the ball from deep. It is ambitious. Over ambitious. The ball goes to ground. Jared Payne fly-hacks forward and chases, but the ball skips over the dead-ball line before he can swoop on it.

    Up to within five metres.

Leigh Halfpenny dummies and steps, but straight into George Moala. Sonny Bill Williams jackals over the top to steal the turnover.

Great defensive work. But the Blues were surely offside in midfield earlier in the piece.

Blues 0-0 British and Irish Lions

The Lions are looking sharp in the opening exchanges. Ball in hand, quick phases and Jack Nowell goes on a couple of game darts before Rhys Webb snipes up the blindside.

The tourists are inside the Blues 22m as they chip away at the home side's defence...

  17. 'The pressure is on'published at 08:35 British Summer Time 7 June 2017

    Ugo Monye
    Former Lions and England winger

The pressure is definitely on. A win at the weekend but with a poor performance will have people nervously watching this morning's encounter waiting to see the Lions roar.

The Blues are perhaps the weakest of the New Zealand franchises but still boast a wealth of experience, with no less than eight All Blacks taking the field this morning - another reminder of the quality and strength in depth the Lions will face. I'm not sure there are many teams in the Premiership that can boast such international talent.

So what do the Lions have to do? Firstly win! This tour is about winning and winning creates momentum. To do this, they'll have to be tighter defensively and execute a lot better in attack. Plenty created, not many chances taken on Saturday.

This morning is all about the Lions. A win and a markedly improved performance will bring back smiles on the faces of his team and the supporters who fervently back them.

A cultural challenge was laid down before the tour opener against the Provincial Barbarians, but not by the Lions' opposition themselves.

Today, the Blues will perform a haka for the first time, directly before kick-off.

It is a special number composed by two local friends Whiria Meltzer and Ruka Makiha who were asked by Tana Umaga to come with something for the occasion.

"They picked it up well because all the boys were buying into it," said Meltzer of teaching the Blues players., external

"They were in the same waka, the same boat. When it's like that it's easy to teach and it's easy to learn as well."

The lyrics honour the memory of two recently-departed former Blues players - Jonah Lomu and Kurtis Haiu.

The Lions out, flexing and popping like they have spent a week in a cage.

Now here come the Blues. Rieko Ioane and Sonny Bill Williams stare around the stands, taking it all in.

The two teams now observe a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.
