Jared Payne spills the kick-off forward to hand the Highlanders the ball and a foothold back in the game.

Penalty to the hosts and Marty Banks punts into the corner.

Big line-out in the post for the Highlanders.

Defensively, Jared Payne has been a calming influence for the Lions so far, despite coming under constant pressure from the Highlanders who started the game at an outrageous pace.

The 31-year-old has made a number of critical interventions to prevent the home side from adding to their tally.

However, going forward his hands have let him down a couple of times, which will frustrate the Ulster player as he is vastly talented in attack too.

Payne still has work to do if he wants to be Warren Gatland's starting full-back for the Tests against the All Blacks.

Sam Warburton has been his usual, committed self tonight, tackling his heart out, and making a nuisance of himself at the breakdown. He also showed his skills with a fingertip catch, followed by a head-down, knees-up charge.

And he’s just capped it off with a skipper’s try. That’s a big tick from his head coach Warren Gatland.

Converted try - Highlanders 13-22 Lionspublished at 53 mins

    Sam Warburton (con Biggar)

Great work from Jonathan Joseph in the build-up - taking a kamikaze line off first phase and then stepping and staying infield out wide.

That buys a bit of space and Sam Warburton picks and goes from the base, and ploughs over with Kayne Hammington water-skiing off the back of him.

Another two from Biggar from in front.

A freebie five-metre scrum for the Lions as Lima Sopoaga flings a loose pass and the ball heads dead.

Now the Highlanders are knocking on the door.

Waisake Naholo, a Tasmanian Devil of a winger, bundles straight through Tommy Seymour and up to within 10 metres.

Play stalls, but we are heading back for a penalty given away by Kyle Snickler.

That is the other side of his game. A needless late barge on Daniel Lienert-Brown.

That is bang central and Lima Sopoaga is lining up an inevitable three...

Rhys Webb squirms clear once again. A brilliant game from him so far at scrum-half.

The Lions are up to the Highlanders 22m line. Iain Henderson picks and goes to delve further into the red zone.

But Alun Wyn Jones has run into his own man to give away a penalty to the Highlanders.

Sam Warburton’s lungs will have been burning hard in the half-time sheds. There is no substitute for match action when it comes to testing your fitness, and this is as high-octane a game as he’d have played in this season.

His breakdown work will need to be sharp for the rest of the second half if the Lions are to slow down the Highlanders' speed of ball. Both sides are playing positive rugby. Can both keep up this level of freneticism?

Tommy Seymour had struggled to make an impact in New Zealand - until now. A brilliant intervention which could be significant both in this game and the tour in general.

    Tommy Seymour

The Highlanders' cross-kicking tactic backfires on them.

It had helped them negate the Lions rabid defensive line in the first half, but this time Tommy Seymour reads Lima Sopoaga's intentions like a childhood ABC.

He gambles and snaffles the kick ahead of Malakai Fekitoa and sprints in.

Jonathan Joseph is usually such a reliable defensive presence for England, but has been bumped off once or twice by the Highlanders' big strike runners.

However, he is probably in credit overall after that classy finish for his try - especially given the way the Lions have struggled to finish on the tour so far.

    Ugo Monye
    Former Lions and England winger

Players that have stood out have are Kyle Sinckler again, Courtney Lawes looked destructive for the time he was on, and Jared Payne has been safe as houses at the back.

Defending Waisake Naholo simply just isn't easy. He is a man that has the ability to run around you, run through you and side step you, and Tommy Seymour has found it hard to contain him so far.

The one thing you can do is shut down his space. So the Lions need a harder press from the outside channels to cut not only his time with ball in hand but also his thinking time, because the man is pure magic!

Ex-Lions Test scrum-half Brynmor Williams on BBC Radio Cymru

The people who've paid to watch this have had their money's worth already.

The Lions are stronger in the tight and perhaps they need to kick a bit more, but kick well to take advantage of that power.

Pretty rugby is great, but they need the win before playing the Maori All Blacks on Saturday and to build on the win over Crusaders.
