It’s a huge night for Sam Warburton at the Forsyth Barr. The tour captain is short of match practice after a six-week lay-off at the end of the domestic season, and admits he’s in a race against time to prove himself worthy of a test place.

His fitness levels will be tested tonight on the dry track in Dunedin. The Highlanders love to play fast and loose, and have some dangerous runners, despite the absence of All Black superstars Ben Smith and Aaron Smith. Warburton will also want to get one over on his old coach, Mark Hammett, who’s helping out at the Highlanders while Tony Brown’s coaching Japan.

  6. One to watch - Courtney Lawespublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

He may not be first choice for England with George Kruis and Maro Itoje Eddie Jones' preferred pairing, but Courtney Lawes could well muscle his way into Warren Gatland's Test reckoning.

He was relentlessly aggressive against the Blues, mixing his usual showreel hits with furious workrate.

  7. One to watch - Lima Sopoagapublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

Highlanders v British and Irish Lions (08:35 BST)

The Highlanders are missing nine first-choice players through international selection and injury so much will rest on the shoulders of Lima Sopoaga.

The 26-year-old fly-half is part of Steve Hansen's Test squad but was released back to the Highlanders to get more match fitness after not starting a game for three months because of a hamstring injury.

Beauden Barrett has the Test 10 jersey sewn up, with Aaron Cruden probably in second slot, but Sopoaga is a canny playmaker with the cojones to take the ball right into the teeth of the defensive line.

In 2011 the Highlanders Stadium, Carisbrook, was closed and replaced by this morning's venue the Forsyth Barr Stadium , external- back then, it was known as "The House of Pain" because of its reputation as being a difficult venue for the visiting team.

If Lions full-back Jared Payne stakes a claim for Test selection at the 30,000 seater stadium, the new venue could also be known as 'The House of Payne'

With Stuart Hogg out of the tour injured, the fight for the 15 shirt for the Tests is wide open, so today’s match is a huge game for the Ulster man.

  9. One to watch - Jonathan Josephpublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

Highlanders v British and Irish Lions (08:35 BST)

    Jonathan JosephImage source, Getty Images

Jonathan Joseph needs a big performance today.

The Bath and England centre is a Rolls Royce of a runner at his best, gliding into space with a raking stride and deceptive ease.

His only appearance of the tour was well short of that though.

While Ben Te'o impressed with straight running and physicality against the Provincial Barbarians in the opener, Joseph just didn't get into the game.

With Jonathan Davies having laid down a marker against the Crusaders, he is playing catch-up.

  10. One to watch - Waisake Naholopublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

Highlanders v British and Irish Lions (08:35 BST)

You may remember Waisake Naholo as much for his body wraps as his try-scoring.

The 26-year-old winger made a shock comeback from a cracked tibia to make the All Blacks squad for the 2015 World Cup after mummifying the affected limb in traditional Fijian healing leaves., external

With electric pace, balance-bar agility and a nose for the unexpected, the Lions will be wary of kicking free ball to him.

When it was built the Forsyth Barr Stadium was the world's first stadium featuring a natural grass pitch under a fully fixed roof.

But just because it is indoors, doesn't mean it will be warm for the Lions.

It is pretty chilly in Dunedin apparently, but all the more reason to give the backs plenty of dry ball to run with.
