On to The Cake Tin then.

The Westpac Stadium in Wellington will host the second Test next Saturday with the Lions left with no room for error.

The Lions will play the Hurricanes at the same venue on Tuesday in the final midweek fixture.

They gave it a damn good poke, but against the best team in the world the Lions have come up short in the Test opener.

    See you later.

British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland speaking to Sky Sports: "The message was things we can fix - we switched off for a quick tap at the try, the ball's gone through Liam Williams' hands and Ioane scored, and a scrum penalty that they took advantage from.

"No excuse in terms of the result. The All Blacks were very direct, better than us at the breakdown and we missed opportunities - all things we can fix.

"We created chances and shifted the ball pretty well. They didn't come out and play champagne rugby, they were very direct off nine.

"We were looking to get the upper hand up front, but in fairness to them they got it today."

Back in 1907 Charles Darwin's cousin, Francis Galton pointed out that the average of all the entries in a ‘guess the weight of the ox’ competition at a country fair was amazingly accurate – beating not only most of the individual guesses, but also those of alleged cattle experts.

It was the start of the 'wisdom of crowds' theory - that a group's average judgement converges on the right solution.

    Anyway.

It was interesting to note that BBC Sport users who had a bash on our Lions XV selector before kick-off had a difference of opinion with Warren Gatland over second row.

Maro Itoje - who started on the bench today - was picked in 75% of the teams selected.

By contrast, Gatland's preference - Alun Wyn Jones - was chosen to partner George Kruis in just 26% of teams.

Kruis hardly had a stormer though.

Which changes - if any - would you make for next week then if you were Warren Gatland?

Does Maro Itoje edges out one of George Kruis or Alun Wyn Jones in the second row?

Does Liam Williams drop for Rieko Ioane's second try cancel out his brilliance for Sean O'Brien's score?

Did Rhys Webb's sniping cameo earn him a starting slot?

Chris Sutton, Taunton: Don't be too frightened, Brian Moore, Lions are likely to get better too.

DG: I'd say they were better with Carter and of course McCaw with all his underhand tactics, but KP still has a point

Anon: The Lions is an outdated concept. The idea that a scratch team can beat the best team in the world is fanciful. England or Ireland alone would have done better today, probably Wales too.

Beauden Barrett is risking repetitive strain injury on his selfie-taking thumb as he poses for snaps with fans of both allegiances.

New Zealand haven’t lost at Eden Park for nearly a quarter of a century, and on this kind of form, you’ll wonder if they ever will again.

The Lions played their part in a test match of ferocious intensity, but other than a period towards the end of the first half – they never looked like winning.

New Zealand skippper Kieran Read speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a hell of a Test match. We were really tested in the first half and just early in the second half. I thought they played outstandingly. There were two skilful teams, working hard for each other.

"There were a few switches in momentum out there. We will go into next week, the same as this one."

    Peter O'MahonyImage source, PA

Lions skipper Peter O'Mahony speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we had an excellent first half and created plenty of chances. We probably missed one in the first half and here in the second.

"We are happy with the opportunities we created. Our discipline wasn't where it should be, we conceded double figures in penalties.

"We have to regroup, have a good look at that and move on now.

"We have got to be a little bit more clinical, we are making some good breaks we just have to finish them off."

O'Mahony said that he did not feel that a 15-point margin of defeat was a fair reflection of the match, pointing out the Rieko Ioane's second try came from a fortunate bounce and that the Lions missed a couple of chances.

A chastening experience for the Lions players and management and no doubt the supporters as well.

Up against an All Black team who continue to set the standards for all others to aspire to they simply had no answer to some of the brilliance on display and even though the Lions finish with consolation score the inquest will be tough.

On the bright side there were moments when the Lions created space and scored a fabulous try from their own line, but that is never going to be enough against a team who are simply better than everybody else.

Warren Gatland said this series was all about the Test matches, and despite the late consolation try the scoreline is a brutal one for the Lions.

The Lions did plenty of good things with the ball in hand - scoring a magnificent try - but they were bossed at the breakdown and at the set-piece, areas they would have hoped to be dominant.

On top of that the All Blacks were their usual ruthless self; three chances, three tries.

Picking the Lions players up from this will be the big challenge ahead of the second Test in Wellington.
