    Italy are on the board!

Tommaso Castello comes up with the big defensive play, shutting down Rob Kearney in the wide channel, and the Italy 12 then burns Dan Leavy on his outside before offloading to fly-half Tommaso Allan.

A few pats on the back for the Italians, as Allan converts his own try.

It's the captain who gets it down after a strong Irish drive for the line. His first Test try in five years.

Someone else did that for Wales last week, but he won't be adding another at Twickenham this afternoon. (That's Halfpenny, in case you can't keep up with my switching)

Ireland's new man Joey Carbery knocks over his first conversion of the game. Easy.

    We had heard whispers.

    Now it is confirmed.

Leigh Halfpenny has been forced out of the Wales starting XV through injury with Gareth Anscombe stepping up into his full-back role.

Owen Watkin comes onto the bench for Wales.

Back in Dublin, Ireland are powering to the line after a strong scrum.

CJ Stander with a huge carry before Johnny Sexton fires a monster pass out to the left wing to Jack Stockdale but the Italian defence survives.

And we'll come back for an offside as the crowd seem to have fallen silent.

Does the Twickenham weather favour the English or the Welsh?

Anon: Drizzle will put pressure on the young Welsh backs and stop England from using their favoured quick ball. Should be a good contest!

Opportunistic play from Ireland. Robbie Henshaw read Sergio Parisse's wrap-around pass to intercept and charged for the line.

He's then fallen badly on his left elbow and that looks like it could be a serious injury for him. Very disappointing that he had to come off.

  11. Replacementpublished at 45 mins

    Ireland 35-0 Italy

It's a sorry end for try-scorer Robbie Henshaw, who leaves the field on the gas and air.

A huge roar from the crowd as they applaud the centre, but his injury means the introduction of 20-year-old Jordan Larmour.

The youngster is on the field!

I, for one, am expecting big things...

Robbie Henshaw is over for Ireland. But at what price?

The centre is down and holding his arm.

Tommaso Allan and Sergio Parisse go for the wrap-around pass in midfield, but it's picked off by Robbie Henshaw who darts away and over the line.

A nice idea from the two Italians, but not executed and in a dangerous area of the field. Silly, rather silly.

My taxi driver hasn't quite grasped the magnitude of the occasion.

As we drew up at Twickenham he enquired what was going on and seemed none the wiser when i explained it was England v Wales in the rugby.

Just from a pure South London traffic point of view it is worth knowing England's home games.

  14. Attacking Ireland produce the goodspublished at 43 mins

    Ireland 28-0 Italy

    Cian Murtagh
BBC Sport NI at the Aviva Stadium

That first half was just about perfect from Joe Schmidt’s perspective. The bonus point secured before half-time, and plenty of good attacking intent a week after his side were unable to cross the try line against France.

Dan Leavy and Jack Conan, making their first Six Nations starts, have been outstanding as part of a new-look back-row combination. Conan’s switch pass to Conor Murray for the scrum-half’s try was clever and that interchange between a forward and a back demonstrates the way Schmidt wants his team to play.

Italy have seen little of the ball (32% possession) and they seem to be conceding penalties faster than Ireland are scoring tries. It’s an area they will need to improve on in the second half if they are to avoid a whitewash.

A horrible first touch for Quinn Roux. With the defence flying up, Roux has to try and pick up a bouncing ball and it dribbles forward.

Not one for the highlight reel.

  17. Kick-offpublished at 41 mins

    Ireland 28-0 Italy

Ireland have made changes at the break. The start of many you would think.

Quinn Roux is out for the second half with CJ Stander.

And in the Italy camp, Nicola Quaglio failed his HIA, so he doesn't return after the interval. Andrea Lovotti is on in his place.

It's a dreich old day at Twickenham as my Scottish granny would say. Persistent drizzle will greet the players shortly as they arrive at HQ.
