So Cardiff Blues take a European trophy back to Wales for just the second time in history.

And what a way to do it - 20-6 down at half time, 30-23 down with five minutes to go before a late try and penalty - who needs soap operas when you have this sort of drama in real life?

Cardiff Blues' season may have ended, but the Pro14 goes on.

The semi-finals take place next week - Leinster will be looking for a European and domestic double while Scarlets will be hoping to retain their crown.

Glasgow meet Scarlets in the first semi-final next Friday, with Leinster hosting Munster in an all-Ireland clash in Dublin next Saturday.

"Second half we decided to run from deeper, got some momentum and got something from it and it led to that last nail-biting few minutes."

Gloucester may have missed out on the Challenge Cup and making the top four in England this year, but next weekend the Premiership play-offs get underway.

Exeter will hope to retain the title they won for the first time last season when they take on Newcastle at Sandy Park on Saturday afternoon.

The winners of that clash will meet the victors of the early kick off between Saracens and Wasps and Allianz Park.

But on the flip side there are huge smiles for the men in yellow and blue hoops - Gareth Jenkins and Ellis Jenkins lift the trophy and they are European Challenge Cup champions!

At half-time Gloucester led this match 20-6 thanks to wonderful tries from Henry Trinder and Will Atkinson.

But Cardiff got a try in the first minute of the second period through Tomos Williams before Garyn Smith went over to put them 23-20 ahead.

Gloucester hit back after James Hanson bundled over and a Billy Twelevetrees penalty to lead 30-23.

With five minutes left Lewis Ludlow was yellow carded and 14-man Gloucester could not hold on - Blaine Scully went over in the right corner, Gareth Anscombe missed the conversion so Cardiff trailed by one, but he made no mistake with a last-minute penalty to seal the win.

Dramatic!

Cardiff Blues try-scorer Blaine Scully told BT Sport:

"The first half wasn't good enough, but I can't commend enough the character of our team.

"Gloucester put us through everything, but I can't speak highly enough of every single person that took to that field today."

Gloucester captain Ed Slater tells BT Sport:

"I feel pretty filthy about they way we lost the game to be honest.

"After the first half the way we played it was in our hands, but fair play to Cardiff they clawed it back in the first 15 minutes, but I still felt we did enough to win the game.

"There'll be a lot of quiet people in the changing room."

Cardiff Blues' Gareth Anscombe tells BT Sport:

"I just can't believe it. We came in at half-time so disappointed with our efforts, we didn't fire any shots.

"Second half just tried to relax a bit. We scored early which took a bit of pressure off.

"The character these boys showed just to stay in the fight - those are the days you live for."

Cardiff were coming back at Gloucetser, but that sin-binning for Ludlow with six minutes left might have been the difference.

Their defensive star all night, without him not only were Gloucester a man down, but they were also an inspirational figure down as well. With Ludlow benched, they let in eight points and go home with nothing.

Cardiff are throwing everything at Gloucester and they win a penalty deep in Gloucester territory. A lovely kick through from Smith and it's a big chase. Gloucester pick it up but hold on to it on the ground and Jerome Garces blows the whistle.

Huge moment potentially. Lewis Ludlow - the big defensive man for Gloucester is sin-binned. Can Cardiff take advantage with Gloucester down to 14 men for the final six minutes?

So close for Cardiff. Amazing feet from Matthew Morgan to get past Henry Trinder and head for the line, but he was held up by last-ditch Gloucester defending.

But Cardiff have the ball at close range...

Meanwhile a couple of big replacements have happened.

Jarrod Evans has come off for Cardiff, with Matthew Morgan coming on at 10 - big call that.

Also Ruan Ackermann is off for Gloucester with former England man Ben Morgan coming on at number eight.

It's all gone a bit mad here. Cardiff almost went over, great play from the backs. But another huge tackle from Lewis Ludlow stops Cardiff in their tracks and they lose the ball.

After about three or four infringements we will come back for a scrum to Gloucester close to their line.

Blues concede a penalty on halfway and Gloucester kick to touch - they have a line-out on the Cardiff 22, but the Welsh side do well to turn the ball over and look to head upfield.
