If South Africa are in the form they have been in, if they play the way they did against New Zealand in the Rugby Championship, England are going to be up against it.

If both teams play at their best, you would probably say that South Africa edge it. But I think that England’s performance without the ball especially has to demonstrate that we know where we are going, regardless of the result.

Joe Marler would doubtless have been pulling on the cleats had he not called time on his international career at the age of 28 a couple of months back.

Haskell was asked about his chances of an international recall last month.

"I think Eddie's lost my number," he replied.

He is pitchside anyway as a television pundit.

With the Springboks' European-based players unavailable, the likes of Sale scrum-half Faf de Klerk, Wasps full-back Willie Le Roux and Bath flanker Francois Louw are all absent.

Damian Willemse makes his full debut at 15, while powerhouse back-row Duane Vermeulen is among those returning faces, having missed the entire Rugby Championship campaign to play his club rugby in Japan.

    South Africa:15-Willemse, 14-Nkosi, 13-Kriel, 12-De Allende, 11-Dyantyi, 10-Pollard, 9-Van Zyl, 8-Whiteley, 7-Vermeulen, 6-Kolisi, 5-PS Du Toit, 4-Etzebeth, 3-Malherbe, 2-Marx, 1-Kitshoff

The body of work that Owen Farrell has put together for Saracens, with the dominance that he shows, it is time that he got a go at fly-half ahead of George Ford.

It is going to be tricky for him behind a much-changed England pack though.

Sale wing Chris Ashton has been brought back into the England squad for Saturday's Test against South Africa following an injury to Manu Tuilagi.

The Leicester centre suffered a strain during training, but will rejoin the squad on Sunday.

Ashton is back in the international fold for the first time in four years.

England's Owen Farrell starts at fly-half for only the third time under head coach Eddie Jones, and fellow co-captain Dylan Hartley starts at hooker.

    England:15-Daly, 14-Nowell, 13-Slade, 12-Te'o, 11-May, 10-Farrell, 9-Youngs; 1-Hepburn, 2-Hartley, 3-Sinckler, 4-Itoje, 5-Kruis, 6-Shields, 7-Curry, 8-Wilson

This is the first of a four-part work-out for England this autumn. And it is an autumn to make more than the leaves wilt.

Next week, New Zealand are in town, with Japan and then Australia to follow on consecutive Saturdays.

    What is par for England?

Jeremy Guscott reckoned that two out of four would be solid if England were competitive in defeat in the other two.

BBC rugby union reporter on BBC Radio 5 live

There has to a chance that Eddie Jones ends this autumn with his P45, but I would say it is seriously unlikely.

I would give you five reasons: I think the players are still behind him, the injuries give him a bit of leeway, he believes that he can turn England around in just a year before the World Cup, it would be a catastrophe for the RFU if they sacked their highly vaunted head coach before he even got a chance to head up a World Cup campaign and finally, who would come in?

All eyes will be on the forwards today and Eddie Jones knows that will be where the biggest challenge lies.

“It’s a fairly easy formula against South Africa,” he said. “It’s a physical battle up front and you’ve got to be tactically smart how you attack against them. We’ve got to find ways of gaining momentum.”

England's pack, by contrast, are mostly callow World Cup wannabes rather than the established Test match performers.

Eddie Jones' options have been slimmed down by injuries to the likes of Billy and Mako Vunipola, Chris Robshaw and Joe Launchbury.

Exeter prop Alec Hepburn makes his first start while Mark Wilson, so impressive in Newcastle's win over Montpellier in the Champions Cup, is making only his second.

Flanker Brad Shields had never even been to Twickenham before yesterday's captain's run.

Hooker Dylan Hartley has more caps (93) than the rest of the pack combined (72).

South Africa may be in in green shirts, but it is England who are still green at this level.

And it is a South Africa forward pack straight from central casting that have rolled up at Twickenham's front door.

In Eden Etzebeth, Malcolm Marx, Duane Vermuelen, Siya Kolisi, and Pieter-Steph du Toit, they have grizzled, battle-hardened Test mammoths who will aim to trample England underfoot.

In the back row alone, the tourists are nearly two stone a man heavier and have 100 caps to England's 10.
