South Africa with a line-out just outside the England 22m and again, for at least a third time, Malcolm Marx chucks it over his jumper for England to hoover up at the back.

If this was a game of darts the Boks hooker would have buried his arrows in the door rather than the board.

As much as I like the talent and flair of Elliot Daly at full back, the cool head of Mike Brown would surely calm things down. England need to claim a couple of these high balls. Surely Brown should be on the bench

England have attempted 88 tackles, South Africa's equivalent figure is 30.

Will the wear and tear of this relentless defensive stint show up early in the second half?

England's bench includes Jamie George, Zach Mercer, Danny Care and Chris Ashton.

Plenty of energy and appetite amongst that lot?

    HT: England 6-8 South Africa

    The half-time stats are revealing.

England's top metre-maker? Wing Jack Nowell with a paltry 20m.

Three Springboks have clocked up more distance than that: Damian de Allende (49m), Aphiwe Dyantyi (44m) and Handre Pollard (26m).

England have only made one visit to the South Africa 22m, and duly lost the lineout.

Chris H: I'm absolutely certain that in twelve months time when Dylan Hartley is holding the Webb Ellis trophy aloft into the Yokohama night sky, we'll all have a good laugh at England's 2018.

Nick: Urgh, England's attacking play is so slow, predictable and telegraphed - too easy for the Springboks who have dominated.

This is massive half time for Eddie Jones. He has somehow got to create a way of playing that is going to break South Africa down.

  16. Half-timepublished at 40 mins

    England 6-8 South Africa

England have withstood some serious pressure and are still in it. It could have been curtains had South Africa been a little more incisive and accurate in their 22m.

The hosts huddle up out on the pitch initially. Perhaps Eddie Jones's worst is tempered by having to conduct his pep talk in public.

    England 3-8 South Africa

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 live

It has been so tight. It has been rucks and mauls, but all of a sudden South Africa went a little bit wider and they begin to run at arms instead of shoulders. England were on the back foot and it was very difficult for England to defend.

From an England perspective they will be pretty happy with the scoreline.
