On paper you would say Exeter should be the favourites against the reigning French champions.

They’ve lost just twice in the league and are top of the Premiership, while Castres have lost half of their domestic games this season.

On top of that, Exeter boast 11 full internationals in their starting line-up, and another five on the bench, while Castres have a dozen internationals in their line-up and two more in reserve.

  3. How do Exeter reach the quarter-finals?published at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2019

    Exeter v Castres (13:00 GMT)

The maths gets a bit complicated at this stage of the competition, but Exeter need victory today - preferably with a bonus point - to keep their European dream alive.

After defeating Gloucester on Friday, Munster are nine points ahead of Exeter at the top of Pool Two.

Rob Baxter’s side have sometimes struggled in Europe, last reaching the quarter-finals in 2016.

Chiefs could still catch the Irish side, but can also qualify in one of three runners-up spots.

A more detailed explanation of the not-so-simple qualification process can be found here (good luck!)

    Exeter v Castres (13:00 GMT)

Castres prefer Ludovic Radosavljevic to Rory Kockott at scrum-half.

They are reigning Top 14 champions, but have struggled somewhat this season and currently lie eighth in the French top flight.

They secured a controversial 13-12 home win over Munster last time out in Europe. Kockott and replacement hooker Marc-Antoine Rallier were cited and suspended after the match for foul play.
