Jonny May allows the ball to dribble through his legs as he attempts to field Garry Ringrose's grubber in backfield.

England are momentarily at full panic stations. The clean-up crew arrive on the scene just in time though.

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 live

I think Keith Earls has gone for the dummy catch, calling as if he's going to get it when the ball is nowhere near him. And Maro Itoje has fallen for it hook, line and sinker. He's not challenging for the ball, so what is he doing?

  3. Itoje in troublepublished at 19 mins

    Ireland 3-7 England

There is going to plenty of jiggery-pokery for Jerome Garces to sort out around the aerial contest.

Maro Itoje gives away a penalty for a clumsy attempt to challenge Keith Earls in the air.

But England are chewing the Frenchman's ear over Conor Murray's apparent body-check on the chasing Jonny May.

The call is green this time. There will be more marginal decisions to call before the end.

    Ireland 3-7 England

England are committing minimal manpower to the breakdown, spreading wide across the field to avoid any gaps appearing.

    It works.

The ball goes to ground and a juggling Josh van der Flier can't claim it.

England are playing this sin-bin period well. Five minutes until Tom Curry re-enters the fray.

    Ireland 3-7 England

Ha! Jack Nowell finally gets the forward gig he was looking for.

The England wing, with a hankering for a role in the pack, binds on at flanker to temporarily replace the sin-binned Tom Curry at scrum time.

  6. Full-backs take centre stagepublished at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    Cian Murtagh

Robbie Henshaw’s surprise switch to full-back for Ireland has allowed Joe Schmidt to postpone having to choose between Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Henshaw in the centre.

The Leinsterman’s performance in the 15 shirt will come under the microscope – particularly given his selection ahead of veteran Rob Kearney – and his head-to-head battle with Elliot Daly will be fascinating.

Depending on how you view his strengths and weaknesses, Daly’s continued presence at full-back for England is either an inspired vote of confidence by Eddie Jones or a desperate gamble – particularly given the anticipated aerial bombardment he will be under from Ireland’s Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray.

But Henshaw’s shift to the last line of defence is not without risk either, he hasn’t played there for Ireland since his Test debut against USA in 2013 and has rarely started there at club level either.

Ireland rumbling ominously up around the England 10m line as Jacob Stockdale thunders into a half gap.

But then James Ryan spills forward in a tackle by George Kruis. That was a poor mistake from an excellent player.

    Denis Hickie

That's adrenaline. Tom Curry is a 20-year-old guy. England are playing away from home against the most disciplined team - you cannot give away penalties.

  9. Sin-bin - Tom Curry (England)published at 13 mins

    Ireland 3-7 England

Yep, Tom Curry's enthusiasm gets the better of him. Over-eager rather than malicious, but his shoulder shot was late and he will have 10 minutes to stew over it in the sin bin.

Ireland haven't conceded a try in the opening minutes of a match in a very long time. That was a real sucker punch of a start.

Johnny May gathers the ball and opts to kick rather than counter.

That is a touch over-cooked though. Medium rather than medium-rare.

Ireland with the line-out back, and now penalty advantage.

Nothing coming from Johnny Sexton's steepling kick on Jonny May.

So he points to the posts.

Keith Earls came charging up out of the defensive line for Ireland and it was one he simply had to get. Once he missed his interception then May was almost guaranteed to score.

Swing Low starts to ripple through the crowd here and Farrell provides the final note with his conversion.

That score has certainly stunned the home crowd.

We've waited eight years for an England try in Ireland. What a beauty! From the moment the kick-off went up, you could see Ireland were on the back foot. They didn't seem to make those impressive tackles Ireland would normally be good at.

Converted try - Ireland 0-7 Englandpublished at 2 mins

    Jonny May (con Farrell)

England have come out playing the sort of high-wire ambitious rugby that is certainly not going to bore the pants off anyone.

After the clever line-out play that picked out Manu Tuilagi, England recycled at top speed, Owen Farrell threw a flat wide mis-pass to create the two on one which Elliot Daly executed perfectly.

Jonny May in the corner. Farrell with the conversion.
