  1. 'They stepped up' - Townsendpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    FT: Scotland 61-0 Russia

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend on ITV: "They stepped up and played some excellent rugby. Russia were here to play, moved the ball wide and challenged all our breakdowns. We had to put a really resilient performance together and takes gaps that started to appear.

"Adam Hastings brought real balance to his game, excellent kicking in the first half, and his running game was excellent. Still a few areas to improve but him and George Horne are playing well.

"We'll obviously see what happens on Saturday now between Samoa and Ireland. But we know we have to win and win by more than seven points to get into the last eight. That will be a big challenge."

  2. Russell set to returnpublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

I think there are some guys that played today that, regardless of how well they played, won't be involved on Sunday, and I think Adam Hastings is one of them. That said, if Finn Russell gets injured in the first five minutes on Sunday, who comes in for him?

  3. So, what now?published at 10:14 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    FT: Scotland 61-0 Russia

That thrashing moves Scotland on to 10 points from three Pool A games. They're one behind Ireland, who play Samoa on Saturday, and four shy of host nation Japan.

To reach the quarter-finals, Scotland must beat Japan on Sunday in Yokohama. That is going to be an absolutely mental occasion.

If Japan get either a four-try or losing bonus point against Scotland, then Gregor Townsend's men must get a four-try bonus point themselves. If Japan get two bonus points, Scotland are gubbed.

Make sense? No? Well, in simpler terms, Scotland have to win and really need to prevent Japan getting a bonus of any kind to qualify.

  4. 'It was never really in doubt'published at 10:11 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

Very convincing, it was never really in doubt. They re-found their groove in the second half and scored some very good tries. Now it's about looking at the big one against Japan, in Japan, on Sunday.

  5. 'We enjoyed that one' - captain Barclaypublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    FT: Scotland 61-0 Russia

Scotland captain John Barclay on ITV: "We enjoyed that one. Sometimes these games can get a bit scrappy and we were a little bit nervous because of what we'd seen Russia do to other teams. But we were really professional, stuck to how we wanted to play and came away with a good result.

"We've been together so long the boys wanted to put in a good shift. Some boys put their hands up for selection against Japan in four days' time."

  6. Back-to-back nilspublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    FT: Scotland 61-0 Russia

I'm not sure Scotland have ever nilled Test teams in successive matches - certainly not in the professional era. Perhaps some stats guru can enlighten me...

As Andy Nicol points out, Scotland have beaten Samoa and Japan by an aggregate score of 95-0. Their tackle completion rate today was 98%.

  7. 'Job very well done'published at 10:06 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    FT Scotland 61-0 Russia

    Former Scotland scrum-half

Job very well done. If you think where Scotland were after that Ireland game, they've now won two games with a total score of 95-0. Make no mistake, this is a back-up team and they've put a bit of confidence back into Scottish rugby to go into that massive game on Sunday.

  8. Full-time Scotland 61-0 Russiapublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    Ruthless. Resounding. Reassuring.

That was an absolute turkey shoot for Scotland against a clearly tired Russian team in their final World Cup match.

Gregor Townsend rested many of his biggest hitters, but boy did those selected deliver. Nine tries scored, zero conceded, and the perfect confidence boost heading into Sunday's monumental showdown with Japan.

George Horne scored a hat-trick, Adam Hastings got two, while George Turner, Tommy Seymour, John Barclay and Stuart McInally all chipped in.

    Job well and truly done.

No try! Hastings falls just short of a wonderful treble, and the full-time whistle goes.

  10. Try reviewpublished at 80 mins

    Adam Hastings

Adam Hastings races away for his hat-trick try but we are checking for a forward pass in the build-up.

  11. 'Excellent skill execution from Scotland'published at 10:01 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

Excellent skill execution from Scotland, it went through three or four pairs of hands and the squad skipper dives in the corner.

    Stuart McInally

Beautiful rugby from Scotland, but their life is being made very easy by some wrecked Russians.

Stuart McInally finishes a wonderful coast-to-coast move in the corner that began in Scotland's 22. Lovely off-loading, support lines and handling, but the defence is non-existent.

Another cracking conversion from Adam Hastings.

  13. 'Tackle avoidance'published at 09:57 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

    Scotland 54-0 Russia

    Rory Lawson
Former Scotland captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think that's what they call 'tackle avoidance' from the Russian defence. John Barclay will talk about that being 60 metres and dummying four players...

  14. converted try

Converted try Scotland 54-0 Russiapublished at 76 mins

    John Barclay

That is probably the worst defending I have ever seen from an international team, even a knackered, demoralised Tier Two team.

John Barclay gallops through a gaping hole in the Russian midfield and just waltzes past German Davydov with the merest hint of a dummy to go under the posts. The winger just stands idly by and watches Scotland's captain cruise past.

Adam Hastings pops over the extras.

Scotland have kicked well and they will be hoping to bag another couple of scores with a some good possessions against a tiring Russian defence.

  16. Postpublished at 74 mins

    Scotland 47-0 Russia

Now it's Scotland who bungle a promising line-out position, Stuart McInally launching a crooked throw seven metres from the Russian line.

Into the final six minutes now.

  17. Scotland still defending stoutlypublished at 72 mins

    Scotland 47-0 Russia

Okay, the Russian attack hasn't been up to much, but Scotland have missed only two of 84 attempted tackles this morning.

  18. Postpublished at 70 mins

    Scotland 47-0 Russia

No, they can't. The line-out throw is crooked. Scrum Scotland. Pretty grim stuff.

  19. Better from Russiapublished at 69 mins

    Scotland 47-0 Russia

Much, much better from the Bears, who finally generate some go-forward and string a few meaningful phases together.

Ryan Wilson concedes a penalty inside Scottish territory and Russia will have a line-out 15m out.

Can they get on the board?

Horne is denied an incredible fourth try, Magnus Bradbury's scoring pass to the little Warrior ruled to be forward.

    Very much the right call.

That's Horne's last act, so he won't get a chance to equal Gavin Hastings' Scottish record of four tries in a World Cup Test. Chris Harris comes on.
