  2. 'Ireland have to show real ambition'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

Ireland have to show real ambition and not revert to the basic game plans that we've seen.

Ireland can play on a different level and we've seen that on many occasions, most recently against the All Blacks in Dublin before Christmas last year. We've seen when they play with more ambition, they don't go into those areas close to the ruck but they move the ball a little bit wider, drop off more passes, link between the forwards and backs and challenge oppositions where they don't want to be challenged.

Unless they do that, I don't think they've got any chance of beating those two teams. If they do that and perform well, they've got half a chance.

Kyle: If Ireland play this well against South Africa or New Zealand next weekend, they will give them a really tough good game. They know they are capable of beating the best. Hopefully they are peaking at the right time

  4. 'Disappointed not to finish with 15'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

    FT: Ireland 47-5 Samoa

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt said: "We are happy with the result and the performance but we are disappointed we didn't mange to finish the game with 15 players. We will look at that and come up with some reasoning for it.

"I rate Nic Berry and I think he is a very good referee so it is hard to argue at the moment, but it is devastating for Bundee [Aki]. He knows the Samoan players really well and it's a disappointing way to finish on the night."

On the crowd: "We had a home game tonight and we had a fantastic crowd. As long as they can make their way to Tokyo, we know we will have great support. We will take it one step at a time and then find out who we are playing tomorrow."

I don't think, aside from allowing a run-out from some of our players and gaining a bit of confidence, the Samoan result has a big effect on a quarter-final. We haven't seen Ireland evolve their game plan significantly, we didn't see any interaction between forwards and backs. We didn't see them getting the ball out wide for their backs which is something that's effective particularly against New Zealand but also against South Africa.

They didn't deliver anything that made me think they're in a position to take on either of them.

Ireland were reduced to 14 men when Bundee Aki was sent off in the 29th minute.

But Samoa failed to capitalise as they did not score a single point while Ireland were down a player.

    Frustrating.

  7. 'We have overcome red cards before'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

Ireland captain Rory Best said: "After the Japan game, we knew 10 points would get us through and we have got that. The boys rolled up their sleeves and we knew how good Samoa are, but we stood up. It maybe wasn't that pretty but we were very effective.

"We have overcome red cards before. It is never ideal but it shows a lot of character in the squad. There was no panic and we continued to attack them. We have some very smart players and it's a nice squad that has been building over the last two games."

  8. 'Are Ireland contenders? Not quite'published at 13:57 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

    Matt Dawson
England World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think they are contenders to get to a semi-final and then who knows. Are they contenders to win it? Not quite on their performances in the pool stages but what I will say is that they have got better as the pool stages have gone on - but they are nowhere near where they were 18 months ago when they were beating New Zealand and South Africa. However, they are going in the right direction.

Ireland got out of their defensive zone very effectively.

Johnny Sexton was very good, Jordan Larmour too and Tadhg Beirne as well. A lot of the players you would want to perform well did so and going into a quarter-final, probably a happy enough camp.

    FT: Ireland 47-5 Samoa

    Shane Horgan

It's not a bad Ireland performance. The fact that Bundee Aki was sent off was an issue and meant they couldn't develop the type of game they wanted.

They were a little tighter around ruck time, a lot of pick and go - something that you wouldn't necessarily see as an effective way to go against this Samoan side.

Kyle: Ireland have been great tonight and deserve all the plaudits. They have been superb in a game they had to win and to get the bonus point so early was tremendous. The ref has been superb too, and throughout the tournament, a real contender for the final

They've had very little time in the Irish 22 - aside from that very short period in the first half this may be only the second time they've been in here. It was a really nice bit of play from Samoa as well. Caught Ireland on the hop a little bit.

It's tough and it's a weary-looking Samoan team at this moment. It's been a tricky game for them, certainly, Ireland have been dominant and super-professional in everything they've done.

It's just a shame we haven't got the opportunity to see more of Joey Carbery at this World Cup, he really is a class act. Just drops the ball on to his right foot, a perfect kick and it sits up just before the dead ball line. Conway knew it was coming.

Really classy play by Carbery, almost every touch he has exudes quality.
