Wales are into their third Rugby World Cup semi-final after a narrow 20-19 victory over France, that pivoted on a red card for France second row Sebastien Vahaamahina and a late try for Ross Moriarty.

Warren Gatland will have a couple more injury worries to look out for though with Jonathan Davies missing the match entirely after a knee injury sustained against Fiji flared up again and Josh Navidi coming off with an apparently hamstring complaint.

They will play either Japan or South Africa next. That match is kicking off shortly in Tokyo.

They are the only team left in this tournament who've had to go to the well. There's a very good chance that will stand them in good stead. I'm recalling a game in 2003 when the better side lost in England v Wales. England scraped through playing badly. To have that in your locker, the knowledge that you can go there where it really hurts, is invaluable. I can't see Wales playing as badly as that again in this tournament.

They don't know what to say, do they? I think they feel possibly a little bit embarrassed to win that game.

Aaron Wainwright is a special player. We knew that probably 18 months ago seeing him play for Newport. He's fast, he's got the ability to beat men one-on-one yet he's still a flanker and brilliant over the ball - and Wales don't have massive ball carriers, but what they've got in Wainwright, Navidi and Moriarty are powerful men who are so explosive.

I think that Wales hare going to assess this game this week, individually it wasn’t good enough and collectively they were playing against a French side that had to be play differently, and Wales failed to adapt.

Japan are more of a French style – pacey out wide, accurate - so Wales will have to change on the hoof. Wales could beat Japan or South Africa because they cannot play as badly as they did today. But Wales in a World Cup semi-final sounds pretty good.

Wales couldn't get any possession and you were thinking, 'when do we really start to panic?' We looked for a moment of brilliance to change that game. It was that gigantic, enormous scrum from the Welsh. It was just massive and blew France away.

Wales wing George North speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "That was nowhere near our best. Our start was pretty slow and I am sure Shaun will have plenty to say but its knockout rugby. You have to be in it to win it.

"We had self belief to get it done, but that was too close to comfort for our liking. We will address it tomorrow, but it’s knockout rugby. We’ll see who we play and focus on next week."

French captain Guilhem Guirado; “We played a big first half, when we play like this we are impressive but when we took the red card we could not control the game.

"We had the possibility to take three points or drop a goal, but we wanted to attack. I am very proud, but to finish the competition like this is very hard because some players have ended their careers now."

Vahaamahina meant to do that. It was inexcusable. It was aggression, he knew exactly what he was doing and there are no excuses. He lost that game for his team. It's just stupid. If you're a French supporter, a French player... it is one of the worst things I've seen.

He's one of their best players. To lose a player like that, you can't replace him.

Wales coach Warren Gatland on BBC Radio 5 Live: I think the better team lost today. The thing about our boys is they don't give up, they keep trying until the end. We kept working away. France came out of the blocks well. At half-time we just said we've got to score next, we did that and obviously the red card was the turning point. It was pretty special.

They did go hard, lost of big men, big runners and they got some go-forwards. Tactically, I thought they were really smart today. We just hung in there and showed some real character. I'm proud of the boys because I think lesser teams would have capitulated but we didn't do that.

We'll just go back, recover today and travel to Tokyo tomorrow. I don't think we've got too many injuries, maybe a hamstring with Josh Navidi. We'll probably have a quiet night tonight!

Knowing Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards they will have 24 hours to enjoy it, soak it up and make the most of it. Whether they'll have a beer or not I'm not too sure, they're probably too tired for that!

I'm not sure it will be quite as taxing mentally against South Africa, presuming they beat Japan, because maybe they'll be the underdogs. There was an expectation for them to beat France and beat them well. Sometimes you stutter because you should be playing a bit better.

David Smith: Wales have got away with one there...surely that was forward at the end? Clear as day for anyone but the refs. Good luck to them in the semis

Kea Sebesho: Jaco Pyper and his TMO have made a shocking call and cost France a semi final spot! That ripped ball went forward and it could be seen clearly using the 5m line

Chris Smith: Daylight robbery there from Wales. Very poor throughout but even more so after the red card. Feel sorry for France coming that close & showed how dangerous they can be in that first half. Huge improvement needed to win a semi final

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones: "We were slow out of the blocks, we started similar to against Fiji but the character we showed to come through, we kept plugging away and it came right on the scoreboard. We wanted to take the advantage with territory and take the opportunities.

"We have plenty to work on, but we are very pleased with the result. We saw a lot of red from the Japanese fans, but the way the Welsh support have come over here is awesome.

I'm emotionally spent! What a game that was from start to finish. I'm looking at the players here, some hugging and jumping, some totally spent, exhausted.

It's taken a toll on them this World Cup, the big games they've had against Australia and FIji.

The turning point was the red card, but I expected a little bit more from Wales if I'm honest. I don't think we saw the best of them in attack. They were certainly shell-shocked in that first half.

The character those boys showed to come back when it really mattered - that scrum which just blew France away and allowed Tomos Williams to get on the ball and the way they saw the game out... They're through to a semi-final and what more could you ask.

"Zidane has a cousin?"

"At this level that is just sabotage."

"Nothing in the head."

Sebastien Vahaamahina is getting a mauling in the comments section below L'Equipe's article, external on his brain-dead red card for an elbow to Aaron Wainwright's chin.

Deservedly so.

Two bench players came on and made the difference, Williams with the rip and Moriarty with the try. That's what you need from your finishers and your replacements.

It's phenomenal watching the Welsh players bowing to the crowd - I'm surprised they've got the energy to bow even once! It's an incredible effort by these guys. What they've pout themselves through in the group stages, now this game.

This is an enormous task for this Welsh team but if there was a team in this tournament who had to climb the mountain the toughest way, I think Wales would be the team to do it.
