The dream was always going to come to an end at some point. They've brought the whole country with them to the quarter-final stages. They've done themselves absolute credit because they play a brand of rugby which maximises every single bit of physical and mental resource they are capable of putting on the field. They've been a joy to watch.
They've just run into a team who were too big and too strong for them.
FT: Japan 3-26 South Africa
Japan's dream World Cup is over. But what a tournament it has been for the hosts.
The living, breathing rolling maul that is South Africa boulder their way into the semi-finals, where Wales await.
Japan 3-26 South Africa
Enough is enough for Handre Pollard. There's no route to the Japanese line so the fly-half lashes into touch to bring this quarter-final to a close.

Japan have been one of the teams of the tournament. Their fans have been great and overall it's been a huge success for them.
Japan 3-26 South Africa
That's the gong.
South Africa on the march, looking for one more score...

The chants of Japan are still going. Quite a heartbreaking atmosphere here.
Japan 3-26 South Africa
And South Africa spoil the party once more. They're all over the breakdown.

They'll be disappointed again, if we think back through the whole game, there have been three or four other moments where there could have been another try. Credit to South Africa, it's 26-3, but there could easily have been another 10 or 20 points on top of that.
Japan 3-26 South Africa
One last chance for Japan to run the ball, but it'll have to come from inside their own 22.
Japan 3-26 South Africa
Willie Le Roux pats a crossfield kick down into the path of Siya Kolisi like a beach volleyball player, but the South Africa skipper can't scoop it up. If he had collected that cleanly, he was in.

And now a penalty for South Africa after more serious pressure on the Japanese ruck. The home fans are still in fine voice, but it doesn't look like they're going to get any late points from their side to cheer...
Japan 3-26 South Africa
The Springboks are winning turnover after turnover. Japan just aren't able to build anything in the opposition half.
Japan 3-26 South Africa
South Africa have been just too good today in Tokyo.
They've not given Japan in inch in this quarter-final, just a step too far for the hosts.

A Japanese commentary team has left the stadium beside us... that's not professional! I think they think the day is done...

Great play by Pollard, not greedy at all, goes through the gap but keeps running his line so the covering Japan defence can't get across - and you're not going to catch Mapimpi with that sort of pace.
Makazole Mapimpi
And that really is it. South Africa thunder into the semi-finals.
From stealing the line-out five metres from their own line, the Springboks cross through Makazole Mapimpi in the opposite corner moments later.
Superb, high-tempo stuff from the green and golds as they release the flying wing down the left and Mapimpi has the power and nous to steam over the line for his second try of the match.
Japan 3-21 South Africa
A huge steal at the line-out by Pieter-Steph du Toit. Ruthless from South Africa.
