The mad thing is they still haven't been really tested yet this World Cup! It sounds ridiculous, but only for about a five-minute period would England fans have had cause for worry, after Savea crashed over. They never actually looked in danger against the mighty All Blacks.

England head coach Eddie Jones on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"We’ve earned another week in the competition, which is great. We’re excited about that.

"Our tactical discipline was good and our defence work rate was good. Most of the time we attacked well but missed a couple of opportunities that we were disappointed in.

"You come here eight weeks ago and you want to go right to the death. We've got another week to enjoy ourselves and work as a team.

"Our players made a commitment to each other to enjoy the World Cup and I think we’re seeing that. Whenever you play against New Zealand you never have them.

"Even at the end of the game they kept coming at us and we had to dig deep and find something extra.

"We've come here to be the world’s best and we haven’t done that yet."

    • Maro Itoje won three turnovers in a match for the third time at this year’s Rugby World Cup, no other player has managed that more than once in this tournament.
    • England won 16 turnovers, the most by any side at this year’s Rugby World Cup and England’s second most ever in a match at the tournament, also winning 16 against Japan back in 1987.

    FT: England 19-7 New Zealand

    Paul Grayson
Former England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

With the balance of Tuilagi at 13 and Ford and Farrell playing together, you've started to see George Ford get back to his best, carrying the ball to the line, using his range of passing and controlling the game with his boot, which is ultimately what killed the All Blacks.

He has emerged - it did look at times as though Farrell dominated him but that dynamic has definitely changed.

Surely we are looking at Ford-Farrell-Tuilagi at 10-12-13 for the final, regardless of who wins the other semi-final.

Owen Farrell might have some rehab work to do on that thigh knock that he picked up in the match.

George Ford speaking BBC Radio 5 live: "It was always going to be an incredible Test match, a semi-final, with both teams fighting for their lives. We said we would have to be near our best, but do our jobs and we knew we would be there or thereabouts.

"So we’ll take it, but what an incredible team NZ are to play against. It’s unique and you cannot switch off. Now we’ll prepare well for next week.

"We never switched off, ever! You cannot switch off for one second no matter what the scoreboard is, we had to fight until the end.

"We hope to better it next week, that’s what it is all about."

You remember Brodie Retallick saying he couldn't name a single England player. He'll know their names now. He got smashed hither and thither.

When England toured New Zealand in 2014, Retallick was asked if he could name any of England's players., external

He said "a couple". When pressed for a name he mistakenly called Courtney Lawes, "Michael Laws", the name of a Kiwi politician.

He resented being reminded of that episode earlier this week as well. Lawes said on Friday "they don’t know, then they will tomorrow."

    Quite.

  9. 'It was comprehensive'published at 11:33 British Summer Time 26 October 2019

    FT: England 19-7 New Zealand

    Matt Dawson
England World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was comprehensive, it really was. We're going to sound like arrogant Pommies here but from minute one, from the kick-off, from the haka, they were mentally in the right spot to throw something on the All Blacks. The pressure they put on New Zealand, you saw them start to crack. Where was Beauden Barrett, where was Savea, where was Retallick? That's not a reflection on them, it's a reflection on how well England played.

I remember being in South Africa last June, they'd lost three in the Six Nations, away to Scotland, they'd been beaten badly at home by Ireland, then they went to South Africa and were well beaten twice.

Robshaw never played for England again, Brown and Hartley never played again, and you have to say Eddie Jones has played a masterstroke in terms of selection and in terms of getting his team prepared. This England team are going to take some stopping. It's not been the smoothest four years, it's not like Sir Clive Woodward's steady rise to the World Cup.

Steve Hansen has been part of a group that has left them in a position for sustainable success. He's broadened and strengthened the depth of the squad. He's done amazing things for New Zealand rugby, so he won't be judged for this performance, but he'll be bitterly disappointed.

New Zealand haven't been exposed to that level of physicality and intensity maybe since 2012. England were able to shut down the key players tonight.

New Zealand coach Steve Hansen: "Congratulations to England, they played a tremendous game of footy and deserved to win. You cannot give them half a step, but they took it.

"I am really proud of our team, they have done a tremendous job, but we were not good enough. We take it on the chin, the boys tried their guts out and I am proud of them."

They are now in the final, which makes this next week so much easier, so much more relaxed. They don’t need to do much work, they can rest up, focus on the opposition, do loads of video analysis – if they do the detail for next week as much as they did today they are close to invincible.

England head coach Eddie Jones on BBC Radio 5 Live: "What we've done is earn another week in the comp which is great. I thought our tactical discipline was great, our defensive work rate was good. I thought when we had opportunities to attack we attacked well.

"You want to go right to the death and we're in the death now. We've got another week to enjoy ourselves and work as a team. Our players made a commitment to each other that they'd enjoy the World Cup and I think we're seeing that.

England captain Owen Farrell: "It’s a big game, a World Cup semi-final against the All Blacks – as big as you can get. We prepared well, and started the game well.

"In all these big games, teams want top get physical from the off, and we wanted to play that way too.

"We have a number ways of playing, we have a big powerful pack but we wanted to play to space as well.

"It’s brilliant to get there, we’ll enjoy this and make sure we prepare well."

Stephen MCP Brogarth: I have never seen an All Black team dominated for 80 minutes. There only points came from an England mistake and apart from that they never threatened our 22. Extraordinary performance by England.

Vicki Turner: Watching my daughter dive, and listening to Eng v NZ via BBC rugby at the same time. Took every ounce of self control not to jump up and down whooping with excitement at the final whistle!!!! What a win!

After being at St. Mary's to see the drubbing last night I needed a pick me up and England have delivered and then some! Sensational performance!
