The good thing for Scotland is if they can keep it to zero it's a massive positive from a defensive point of view. Italy's chances have come from Scotland errors deep in their half that they have counter-attacked on.

Attack-wise they have a lot to do, there is no flow - it stutters and staggers, there is a real disconnect between the nine and 10.

This is a tough watch. The teams exchange a couple of kicks and after a few blunt phases, Scotland knock on.

Defensively, it's been promising for Scotland but their attack is not really functioning again.

The Scottish line-out goes astray and the visitors still have the ball, but about 20m further back down the pitch.

    Italy 0-10 Scotland

Zani, who's not long on the pitch, is sent for 10 minutes in the Sin-bin after lifting Grant Gilchrist above the horizontal and unceremoniously dumping him to the ground.

Italy had a penalty, too, but it's been reversed.

We're looking for a bit of foul play here, Federico Zani on Grant Gilchrist, I think...

The weakness for Scotland at the moment is Adam Hastings. He's not controlling the game, he needs to be bossing the game better than he is - he's carrying it himself, he is almost lost for ideas. It's frustrating because it's scrappy.

Stuart Hogg prods a kick out on the full. This game isn't a thing of beauty, much like two weeks ago against England. Except this time, it's sunny.

Anyway Grant Gilchrist is on in the second-row for Scott Cummings and Byron McGuigan replaces Sean Maitland on the wing.

Malcolm: In the last 12 months, Scotland have tightened up defensively (conceding infinitely fewer tries). But in everything else we've got worse and worse. This is our level: grinding out a dire contest with Italy. Who is responsible for that?

Sean Maitland claims George Horne's box-kick which gets Scotland nearly up to the Italian 22. Good defence by the Azzuri who are keeping their opponents at arms-length.

There's another kick up from Scotland and Jayden Hayward calls for the mark. Incredibly scrappy.

Superb play by Jake Polledri who gets his paws on the ball to disrupt a Scotland maul. The Gloucester player is another who's put in some shift.

Centre Rory Hutchinson is on for try-scorer Chris Harris. Interesting to see if the Northampton man can make an impact.

Italy clear and Scotland have a line-out around the half-way line.

Another end-to-end bit of play comes to an end! George Horne makes an instant impact as he thumps his opposite number and forces a turnover. It sends Blair Kinghorn and Chris Harris scampering down the park.

Italy compose themselves and get back, and then Stuart Hogg is pinged for not releasing on the other side of the pitch.

There was a man in white lying on top of the Scotland captain, though...

George Horne replaces Ali Price at scrum-half for Scotland while Matt Fagerson is on at number eight in place of Magnus Bradbury who has put in a shift.

Scotland have started the second half really well. They attacked really close to the breakdown for the second try, making a lot of yards within two of three feet and getting the offload away.

Since then it has got loose. The Italians carry a threat but if Scotland hold their discipline they can win this by a few points.

What's Adam Hastings doing? Absolutely brilliant break, he gets tackled as he goes to make the pass, but that's awful from an international player. We hang on by our fingertips.

Hastings has got to learn that's a try all day long if he just plays the game, but he throws the ball away.

The Stadio Olimpico roars as Matteo Minozzi tears into Scotland's 22. It's broken down but they're building the phases...but Ben O'Keefe blows his whistle. Penalty Scotland.

That all came from Adam Hastings' break, but he was a bit casual and throws the ball away which allowed Italy to counter.

Scotland have got away with it, though.

Rory Sutherland is pinged at the scrum and it's Italy's turn for some back-slapping and cheers. Will that galvanise them? They've been missing in the second half so far.

They kept the ball, kept it underneath those posts. The options for the backs, they were standing knowing they were not going to get the ball... but eventually a couple of passes and we make the try. A big, strong lad running hard.

There's lots of applause and back-slapping in the Scotland huddle as they force a knock-on inside Italy's half immediately.

Can they really turn up the heat?
