  1. Ulster march on as Edinburgh lick their woundspublished at 21:59 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    FT: Edinburgh 19-22 Ulster

We wanted a classic Pro14 semi-final and that can't have been far off it. What a dramatic finale at Murrayfield.

Several times Edinburgh looked set to pull away, but Ulster stayed in the fight and grew stronger as the game moved into the latter stages.

It was left to Ian Madigan to seal a famous Ulster win and break Edinburgh hearts with a last-gasp penalty.

For Ulster it's a Pro14 final next weekend against champions Leinster. Edinburgh's Pro14 season is over, but they do have a European Challenge Cup quarter-final away to Bordeaux in two weeks time. But it will need a big recovery after this hammer blow.

Thanks for your company this evening. Stay across the BBC Sport website for all the reaction to tonight's match.

    Quote Message

We've got to have a hard look at ourselves, myself included. We've got to get this better because this isn't good enough tonight. We should have had the wherewithal within us to win that game and clearly we weren't capable.

  3. 'We don't understand how to win knockout games'published at 21:51 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    More from Richard Cockerill......

    Quote Message

I'm disappointed that we didn't understand what we needed to do. Our international players in those key moments have to step up. It's about winning the game. It's about doing the right thing to win a game of knockout rugby and some of our boys clearly don't understand what that looks like. I won't make excuses and say we're on the right path. We should have won tonight.

    Quote Message

Pretty gutted really. We got ourselves into a winning position at 19-7 and we weren't capable of controlling the game and doing the basics well enough to go on and win. We got what we deserved. In the key moments some of our guys made some really poor decisions.

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer at Murrayfield

"Ulster had looked in all sorts of trouble at various points in the Murrayfield semi-final, but when the heat truly came on they came alive. Ulster grew and fought like men possessed. Edinburgh folded. A huge victory for McFarland's men, what a crushing blow for Cockerill."

  6. A missed opportunitypublished at 21:37 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    FT: Edinburgh 19-22 Ulster

It will be very interesting to hear what Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill has to say after that.

He told us during the week he felt, after three narrow defeats in knockout games in recent years, he felt his side was ready to take the next step and come out the right side in one of these big games.

The truth is when the going got tough tonight his side stopped playing and completely surrendered the initiative.

Of course it's been an excellent league campaign, but this represents an enormous missed opportunity to reach a maiden Pro14 final.

My big issue with Edinburgh is they lack a little leadership in those outside channels. They need someone to take a little pressure off Jaco van der Walt. And their discipline has to improve

Edinburgh just stopped playing. They were so disappointing in that last 25 minutes.

  9. 'Sickening for Edinburgh'published at 21:27 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    FT: Edinburgh 19-22 Ulster

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer at Murrayfield

This is Edinburgh's fourth knockout game under Richard Cockerill and their fourth defeat. This is the most sickening of all.

When the heat really came on there was only one team playing and that was Ulster. Edinburgh's big players evaporated in those moments.

Edinburgh blew it. Their game management in the second half was non-existent. Richard Cockerill will be absolutely furious.

  11. 'Ulster did it with heart and nous'published at 21:23 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Edinburgh 19-22 Ulster

    Tony McWhirter
1999 Ulster European Cup winner on BBC Radio Ulster

"Ulster have gone to the well this evening, the 13 forwards that have played expelled every ounce of energy.

Mathewson controlled the speed of the game in the second half, Ulster kept the ball alive in that second half they had enough nous and enough heart. There is heart back in Ulster Rugby.

They have come up in spades."

  12. Full-time: Edinburgh 19-22 Ulsterpublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

And that's that. A famous win for Ulster but a sickening way for Edinburgh's Pro14 season to finish.

Fair play to Ulster, they refused to throw in the towel even when they were under the cosh.

Edinburgh will be devastated though. The game was there in the palm of their hand and they allowed it to slip away.

  15. Extra time beckonspublished at 79 mins

    Edinburgh 19-19 Ulster

A quick update on the rules:

In the event of a tie at full time in a Guinness PRO14 Semi-Final then extra-time will be played, consisting of two periods, each of 10 minutes. If the score is still tied after extra-time, the Team that has scored the most tries in the match will be deemed the winner. If the Teams are still tied on points and tries at the end of extra-time then the winner will be determined by a Place Kick Competition. In the event that a Place Kick Competition is required, each Team will nominate three goal kickers who will take six place kicks between them from different positions along the 22 metre and 10 metre lines. The Team with the most place kicks scored will be the winner. If the Teams are tied at the end of their six kicks, then sudden death will apply. Only players in the playing area at the final whistle of extra-time may be nominated for the Place Kick Competition.

Try! Edinburgh 19-19 Ulsterpublished at 75 mins

    John Andrew, con Ian Madigan

It's another rolling maul and a weary-looking Edinburgh are unable to stop John Andrew going over.

Substitute Ian Madigan nails a super touchline conversion and we are all square at Murrayfield.

  17. Can Edinburgh hold on?published at 74 mins

    Edinburgh 19-12 Ulster

It's all Ulster at the moment.

They kick a penalty into the corner and look to get another maul rolling towards the Edinburgh line but are repelled.

Grant Gilchrist is then penalised for failing to roll away and Ulster can once again go to the corner.

This is a huge test of Edinburgh's mettle now.

  18. Desperate defencepublished at 70 mins

    Edinburgh 19-12 Ulster

BBC Radio Scotland match commentator Stuart McFarlane describes Edinburgh as "a boxer on the ropes taking several blows" and that sums things up at the moment pretty well.

Ulster threaten again and lively winger Rob Lyttle dances towards the line but the pass inside does not go to hand and it's relief for Edinburgh again.

The home side come up with a big scrum to force the penalty and will look to clear the lines.

  19. Pressure releasedpublished at 68 mins

    Edinburgh 19-12 Ulster

Ulster have a bit of zip to their play now and are getting their big carriers on the ball.

They make their way into the Edinburgh 22 yet again, but Marcell Coetzee fails to collect a pass and the knock-on releases the pressure on Edinburgh.

  20. Beautifully poisedpublished at 66 mins

    Edinburgh 19-12 Edinburgh

A flurry of tries in the second half has ignited this match and we are beautifully poised as we head into the closing stages.

Ulster definitely have the wind at their backs. They think there's something here for them now.
