Edinburgh as a team and a club have come a long way from the rudderless ship Richard Cockerill found on his arrival in 2017.

So how have they been transformed from strugglers to contenders? Our man Thomas Duncan breaks it down here.

And if you want to hear the thoughts of Cockerill himself on how he has turned things around at Murrayfield, he was a guest on this week's BBC Scotland Rugby Podcast. Listen here.

The fact there is no crowd probably favours Ulster, there’s no hostile home crowd shouting at them. But I actually think it will also benefit Edinburgh. It’s their first time in the semi-finals and sometimes the anticipation of a home crowd can play on the players’ nerves.

  3. Clash of the coaches - Cockerill v McFarlandpublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Edinburgh v Ulster (KO 1935)

The Edinburgh and Ulster head coaches, Richard Cockerill and Dan McFarland, are no strangers to one another. The former front-rowers locked horns when Cockerill's Leicester faced McFarland's Richmond back in the 1990s.

"By God it was tough. But it was a fantastic experience," McFarland reflected this week.

More recently, the pair came into regular contact when McFarland served as forwards coach to the Scotland national team before taking over at Ulster.

"Dan was Scotland forwards coach who sat in at our meetings and watched many of our training sessions so he knows what is coming," Cockerill told The Scotsman.

“It doesn’t take a genius to work out what is coming from a team I coach."

    Edinburgh v Ulster (KO 1935)

This most unusual of league seasons is hurtling towards its conclusion as Edinburgh and Ulster do battle at Murrayfield for a place in next weekend's Pro14 final.

Despite Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill spending much of his time with the media this week arguing to the contrary, his side go in as favourites despite this being their first appearance at the semi-final stage.

Ulster have not found their stride since rugby resumed, losing two from two, and are missing some key men. But their recent record against Edinburgh is very good, and they undoubtedly have the players to turn the match in their favour.
