  2. 'I know how hard he has worked'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 17 July 2021

FT: Stormers 3-49 British and Irish Lions

Lions captain Alun Wyn Jones made his return to the side after recovering from a dislocated shoulder, and head coach Warren Gatland said the Welshman "defended well" against the Stormers.

"I thought he put a few shots on and defended well," said Gatland.

"The big thing was to get through the period and his lungs. I haven’t spoken to him after the game but I will. I know how hard he was worked to be on this Lions tour.

"It was a shame he got that injury but we are delighted to have him back. We will have a conversation to see if he is involved as a starter or on the bench, or not at all.

"He is a competitor and he was desperate to get back. It shows how much it means to the players to go on a tour and hopefully be successful. The boys are pretty happy in the changing room."

  3. 'Robust debate'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 17 July 2021

FT: Stormers 3-49 British and Irish Lions

Lions head coach Warren Gatland said there will be some "tight calls" ahead of his selection for the first Test.

"There are going to be some tight calls with regards to the back three and the loose forwards, and how that mix is going to look," said Gatland.

"They are probably going to be the tightest calls, but we will go through the process and make sure we look at the starting XV and also the impact of the bench as well.

"We will sit down and have a look at the game and sit down with the medics. Then we will start thinking about those right combinations. We will go through that process over the next 72 hours and there will be some robust debate I would presume."

  4. 'We put down a markerpublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 17 July 2021

FT: Stormers 3-49 British and Irish Lions

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lions hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie said: "You can only put your right foot forward, and as a team, we put down a marker tonight.

"The last few games we have kept it at the front just to see whereabouts we are, and we are moulding together alright. We just wanted a faster start and the way we finished last week was really good.

"It probably wasn't the fastest start but we defended better. We have a few more things to work on but I think we will be good by Test time."

On his chances of selection for the first Test: "Scrums weren't as pleasing as I wanted them to be. It could have been a lot cleaner but I think we came out on top. Everyone just wants to win so we want to put our best 23 forward. As long as we win, it doesn't matter."

  5. 'The chance to make history'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 17 July 2021

FT: Stormers 3-49 British and Irish Lions

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lions match captain Stuart Hogg said: "I feel we are in a good place. At times, it was a bit loose but that was because we were put under pressure by a good Stormers side.

"Credit to the boys for digging deep and we knew the longer it went on, the more opportunities we would have. We just wanted to express ourselves and have some fun.

"We talk about great memories being built on the back of great opportunities, and tonight was one of those. Now we get excited about the next few weeks and the chance to make history."

On his chances of selection for the first Test: "I'm just here to do my job, and if I get the opportunity next week, then brilliant. If not, I will be backing up the boys and making sure we can do everything we can to win a test series."

Exeter duo Luke Cowan-Dickie and Jonny Hill received a bit of strapping, but the Lions have come through unscathed in their final hurdle before the Test series.

Nearly 50 points on the board and a successful return to the side for captain Alun Wyn Jones, after a hairy three weeks!

The perfect prep for the series with the world champions?

    Sam Simmonds (con Marcus Smith)

    Floodgates. Open.

The Stormers have played valiantly but there are lots of tired legs out there now, and even more gaps in the defence.

The Lions are through and Sam Simmonds receives the final pass from Stuart Hogg to dot down under the sticks.

Marcus Smith cannot miss the conversion from there.

    Louis Rees-Zammit (con Marcus Smith)

    Coast to coast!

I was saying the game is starting to open up, and Marcus Smith is turning on the style.

The fly-half executes one of his exceptional goose-steps close to his own line before flying clear down the other end.

Louis Rees-Zammit is on hand to receive the pass on the wing and nobody is stopping him from there.

Smith's impressive cameo continues as he adds another two from the tee.

It doesn't look like it at the minute. That's try number five for the forwards.

But there are still just under 10 minutes to go and the game is starting to open, so watch this space...

    This time, the try stands!

Pick and go, pick and go.

The Lions roll through the phases close to the Stormers' line and Zander Ferguson muscles over from close range.

Marcus Smith maintains his 100% record from the tee.

It's time to throw it around, it seems.

Marcus Smith starts the move with a neat pop to Mako Vunipola, who makes several yards.

It's then about the off-load game as several red shirts catch and pass before it eventually breaks down.

  14. No try - Stormers 3-28 British and Irish Lionspublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 17 July 2021

It's chalked off as Duhan van der Merwe's link-up with Stuart Hogg was marginally forward in the build-up.

It's unlucky but probably the right call.

Just a brief pause in proceedings here as Jonny Hill receives a bit of attention from the physio.

It looks like a bit of strapping being added to that left ankle, but he's OK to continue.

    On we go...

The man doesn't understand the word "fear".

Alun Wyn Jones dislocated his left shoulder three weeks ago, but he has used the same part of his body to commit to all three tackles since coming on.

If in doubt, give it a blast!

    Under the sticks!

This is all about Marcus Smith, who keeps the Stormers defence honest before playing a no-look inside pass to Elliot Daly.

The Lions are through and Jack Conan is fed the ball to dot down under the posts.
