    England 52-10 Scotland

England will head to Italy in a week's time knowing that victory would send them into a play-off for the title on the final weekend.

It is going to take some team to stop them making it a hatrick.

Scotland started well and were within nine points of England after 27 minutes before the Red Roses possession and territory started to tell.

In the end the hosts chalked up eight tries, taking full advantage of Scotland's two yellow cards and replacement Molly Wright's red.

The bonus point was wrapped up long before the final whistle and they roll on towards Italy next weekend with plenty of pump in their tyres.

You want match stats? We got match stats.

Possession you say? 53%-47% in England's favour. Territory was a 65%-35% split in the hosts' favour.

England also made a greater proportion of their attempted tackles (91% to 82%), although coach Simon Middleton may have words about the discipline. England conceded 14 penalties to Scotland's 11 and picked up a couple of yellow cards with Poppy Cleall and Lark Davies dumped in the sin bin.

  4. 'We can play better than that'published at 17:01 British Summer Time 3 April 2021

    England 52-10 Scotland

Player of the match Poppy Cleall: "We've been waiting a long while for the opening game of the Six Nations. Some bits we won't be too happy with and we can play better than that but it's a good start for us.

"We have been watching the men's game and how the new laws work and we need to get up to speed a little bit with that side of things."

On twin sister Bryony's return from injury: "She fitted seamlessly in and we're so proud of her and pleased to see her back in a white shirt. She's worked so hard."

Relentless from England but a massive improvement from Scotland.

A massive statement of intent from the defending champions.

England roll on towards Italy next weekend. It could get messy for the Azzurri.

  7. Poppy Cleall player of the matchpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 3 April 2021

There have been some strong performances from the likes of Jess Breach, Emily Scarratt and Scotland's Lisa Thomson, but Poppy Cleall has been unbelievable and produced some crazy stats. She lives life on the edge but she is a very, very good rugby player.

Scotland's Louise McMillan pays for the penalty try with a yellow card of her own.

    Penalty try

Scotland are guilty of pulling down a rolling maul that was only going one way...

And the referee marches under the posts to give the penalty try.

  10. No trypublished at 76 mins

    England 45-10 Scotland

Poppy Cleall's size nines are deft enough, but her hands let her down. A slight spill forward in the grounding.

    No try.

  11. Try reviewpublished at 75 mins

    England 45-10 Scotland

Poppy Cleall, who else?, looks to have crossed for try number eight for England.

The referee is coming over to have a gander at the pitchside ipad though.

Was there a problem in the grounding at the back of a shoved scrum? Scrum-half Jenny Maxwell was sniffing around...

  12. 'Poppy Cleall again!'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 3 April 2021

    Natasha Hunt
World Cup-winning England scrum-half on BBC iPlayer

Poppy Cleall again - I'm almost bored of her talking about her she's been that good today! Brilliant work to add to her great stats, as if they weren't enough already.

Try - England 45-10 Scotlandpublished at 71 mins

    Poppy Cleall

Poppy Cleall is at the bottom of a mound of bodies. She comes up clutching the ball and claiming the score.

Helena Rowland has taken on place-kicking duties in the absence of Emily Scarratt, who has been replaced by Meg Jones.

    No dice. Off the post.

  14. Postpublished at 70 mins

    England 40-10 Scotland

England with a penalty advantage after a high tackle on Vicky Fleetwood. Nothing coming from the cross-kick. Helena Rowland clumps the kick into the corner and England will try and shovel the rolling maul over the line from here.

  15. Postpublished at 67 mins

    England 40-10 Scotland

England, with Lark Davies and Poppy Cleall back into the fray, have a player advantage. It is showing.

Poppy Cleall with an outrageous overhead pass, slung over the top of a tackle finds Ellie Kildunne and the replacement full-back is stopped just short of the line.

  16. Red card - Molly Wright (Scotland)published at 63 mins

    England 40-10 Scotland

I am not sure that Johnnie Cochran could have got Molly Wright off the hook for that.

The Scotland replacement swings her shoulder into the head of England prop Vickii Cornborough.

The referee talks it through with her team of officials, but no-one can come up with anything convincing to avoid the red.

  17. Replacementpublished at 62 mins

    England 40-10 Scotland

England shuffle the back division as Lydia Thompson makes way, full-back Sarah McKenna shifts to the wing and Ellie Kildunne comes on at 15.

Scotland make a change of their own with Jenny Maxwell replacing Mairi McDonald at nine.

  18. 'Scarratt calming down England players'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 3 April 2021

    Natasha Hunt
World Cup-winning England scrum-half on BBC iPlayer

England are trying a little too hard to make amends because they only have 13 players on the field and captain Emily Scarratt is trying to calm her players down.

  19. Postpublished at 61 mins

    England 40-10 Scotland

England are holding strong despite being two players down.

Drifting, talking and spreading across the space to deny Scotland the space they are sure is out there somewhere...

  20. Sin-bin - England's Lark Daviespublished at 57 mins

    England 40-10 Scotland

England hooker Lark Davies is under the microscope for a tackle that looks like it connects with Siobhan Cattigan's chin.

There is a bit of mitigation though.

Cattigan was being tackled round the legs by Shaunagh Brown and was dropping in height.

England are down to 13 for the next few minutes with Poppy Cleall also in the bin.
