    Scotland 10-14 England

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC One

No Scots have been able to get in there and disrupt that. They went 10 metres.

That's a superb line [from Smith].

  2. 'A spark of energy from Smith'published at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Scotland 10-14 England

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's all about up the jumper. Tuck it up and let's see what Scotland have got with the driving maul. When you're going to collapse England you've got that spark of energy from Marcus Smith.

It was a lovely step off the right foot and he glided in.

Scotland look tired as Marcus Smith scoots through a very large gap.

Smith can't quite make the tricky conversion.

  4. Postpublished at 53 mins

    Scotland 10-9 England

It doesn't work out for Scotland's new front row and England are gifted a penalty to get them up the pitch.

Then the officials miss a very squint line-out...

  5. 'England's defence on the ascendancy'published at 17:57 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Scotland 10-9 England

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a bit too relaxed from Finn Russell under enormous pressure. It was a nice step and a break. That is the first time I've seen Scotland go through multi-phase ball. England looked like they were more on the ascendancy in their defence than Scotland would like.

  6. Replacementspublished at 51 mins

    Scotland 10-9 England

Scotland just can't get going at all.

Now the changes begin, with the home side changing the whole front row, just in time to scrum down.

  7. Postpublished at 50 mins

    Scotland 10-9 England

A few phases from Scotland but England are on top of Finn Russell in a flash and it all falls apart.

Advantage to England as the visitors rumble forward. Another advantage... Scotland just about hanging on as Marcus Smith lines up a tiddler in front of the posts.

  11. 'Russell's maverick streak'published at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Scotland 10-6 England

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC One

My impression of Russell is he has always had that maverick streak. But his game management has got far better over the last few years.

  12. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Scotland 10-6 England

From a re-set scrum, England infringe and Duhan van der Merwe starts motoring forward. Finn Russell with an awkward, stabbed kick, but it rolls out to surrender possession.

  13. 'He overthought that'published at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Scotland 10-6 England

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC One

When you're under pressure with a very high ball you just have to catch it. With that amount of time you have time to think.

  14. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Scotland 10-6 England

Freddie Steward with a bad fumble. The crowd love that... Scrum to Scotland just inside the England half.

  15. 'Nowell could be the difference'published at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Scotland 10-6 England

    Martin Johnson
Former England captain and coach on BBC One

I think Jack Nowell might have a say in this at some point. He could give England some go forward. England need to keep doing what they're doing. Play quick and trust yourself with the ball.

    Martin Johnson
Former England captain and coach on BBC One

I think their attackers look more efficient and sharper. England need to make sure they don't give away those penalties. Trust their defence. If Scotland score the next points it starts looking like a long way back for England.

  19. Scotland's 'simple and effective' trypublished at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    HT: Scotland 10-6 England

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

Scotland have noticed that if they drive into the middle there are a couple of forward defenders who are not going to be up to handling Darcy Graham and Stuart Hogg.

They wanted to set those hares at Nick Isiekwe and Maro Itoje. It was beautifully timed and practised to within an inch of its life. It was simple and effective as the best things are.

    Andy Nicol
Former Scotland scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

Rugby is not all about what you do with the ball - it's what you do without the ball and Scotland have done that really well.

It's been a proper team performance. It's all working.
