There's a bit to work on for next Saturday against Canada, but Marcus Smith - the talking point of the team selection - had a good day and didn't look out of place on the international stage.

And you can take a look at Becky Gray's match report as I wrap up for today.

  2. 'Pleased but we can improve'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 4 July 2021

    England 43-29 USA

England coach Eddie Jones speaking to Channel 4: "I am really pleased, 12 new caps, it was a great day for rugby with spectators at the ground.

"As a team there are things we can improve but for so many players making their debut for England, we have got to be pleased with how they went.

"It was one of those games that tend to open up. As we got loose they got stronger, and full credit to USA. They kept in the game, kept coming and we got a little bit loose. We had a number of young players on at the end that will benefit from that experience.

"Dan Robson did a great job for a half-back on the wing! Losing Ollie Lawrence and Max Malins early in the game took away a bit of our fire power, that was unsettling, but you have to be good enough to cope with that. It affected us more than it should have.

"Test match rugby is about consistency, doing the small things right, that is where we dropped off in the second half. They are a great group and they will only keep improving."

    England 43-29 USA

Harry Randall speaking to Channel 4: "It's an honour to represent my country, it has been a dream of mine for a long time. Fair play to them, they really had a crack at us in the second half.

"Defensively there is a bit to work on, and there's plenty to learn from but it's a good win. We scored some nice tries, the biggest area is to look at the defence."

That was very, very entertaining, possibly because of the disjointed nature of England at times - but worth remembering that they did take their chances well when they got them.

There's a frantic end to the match as USA try to run from deep after Harry Randall attacks into the 22, but Andrew Brace blows for full time.

That was an eventful second 40 minutes to say the least.

Dan Robson cannot control the ball at a kick, it lands in a USA breadbasket and quickly is fed to sub and debutant Dyer, who touches down under the posts.

Not a great look for England at the end here.

    Brilliant stuff from the scrum-half!

    That will do!

Harry Randall bursts for the line and in the tackle he flips the ball up to Marcus Smith. He sidesteps over the line and then does a dive for the benefit of the cameras.

He misses the conversion, but it's been an impressive debut from the talented 22-year-old.

Disappointing lack of accuracy and intent from England this half – not helped of course by those two backline injuries.
