Mason Grady is such a strong ball carrier, if he puts his hand up today he could find himself on the bench next week against Australia.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Mason and Johnny Williams go today.

  7. 'Emotional occasion' for Portugalpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

Portugal head coach Patrice Lagisquet told S4C: "For the players this is an emotional occasion, we have a lot of supporters, more than ever maybe.

"The players have to focus on what they have to do, if they get too emotional they won't perform how they'd like but it'll be difficult for the players, you never know what will happen."

  8. Wales must not 'play as individuals'published at 16:36 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

Bonus points are going to be crucial in this pool.

With different combinations and players playing for a place in the first team that's a problem in my opinion for Wales.

If Wales play as individuals it'll give Portugal some hope and against a lower tier side you need to avoid giving them confidence.

Wales need to show they're the better side early, to make it easier for themselves and for us as fans!

  9. New World Cup tackle recordpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

Wales set a new World Cup record last weekend, putting in 253 tackles against Fiji.

It was the sixth time in the tournament’s history a team completed 200 tackles in a match, and comfortably beat the previous record of 218 by Georgia against Australia in 2019.

Unsurprisingly Welsh players also topped the individual tackle stats: second-row Will Rowlands made 27, prop Gareth Thomas 23 and captain Jac Morgan led from the front with 20.

Warren Gatland will be hoping it will be Portugal topping those stats today.

  10. 'Potential banana skin' for Walespublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

Wales head coach Warren Gatland told ITV: "Portugal have nothing to lose and they deserve to be here.

"This game is potentially a banana skin for us as we've made multiple changes but it's a chance for players to put their hands up for next game against Australia.

"Last week's game was a nail-biter against Fiji but we got there in the end and there are lots of sore bodies with a short six day turnaround.

"We want to give as many people a chance to get some rugby as injuries could well play their part."

  12. Portugal fans make their voices heardpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

Portuguese rugby fans have had to wait 16 long years to play in a Rugby World Cup and having been about Nice today, they are certainly enjoying it.

The chanted all the way to the stadium on a packed tram.

Wales fans are renowned for their singing, but they'll have plenty of competition today!

We've had quite heavy rain here in Nice today, but the sun has come out just in time for kick-off.

My phone is showing 23 degrees, that's 10 degrees lower than the Fiji game in Bordeaux, but World Rugby says players will still be allowed water breaks.

Christ Tshiunza needs to have a big game, because in his two or three games previously he hasn't shown his presence enough.

We haven't seen his form for Exeter in a Wales shirt and I hope he has a big game because he and Dafydd Jenkins are the future of Wales in the second row.

Wales lock Christ Tshiunza has one of the most intriguing backstories at this World Cup.

The 21-year-old came to the UK as a boy with his family from the Democratic Republic of the Congo - with French being his native language.

They settled in Wales and Tshiunza began playing rugby aged 15.

Four years later he made his international debut and now finds himself on the world stage.

"It is very surreal, considering in 2010 I didn't even know what rugby was," he said.

And when it comes to his family, Tshiunza admits they "haven't got a clue".

"They are like, 'Where's Christ, where's Christ? Oh, good job, you did something well today'."

    Josh Navidi

The experience Dan Lydiate has as a player especially in a fairly young welsh squad is huge, he's embracing the moment because he's been around for such a long time.

He deserves this chance to run out here today.

  18. Wales' priority to be 'bloody hard team to beat'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

Warren Gatland made a bold statement before this World Cup, saying that Wales will "do something special".

He said this week he still believes that.

"If we're a hard team to beat, then things can happen for you," Gatland said.

"The first priority is to be a really tough team to beat.

"If we do that and get things right, our preparation is good and we don't pick up too many injuries, then there's no reason why we can't continue to progress a long way into this tournament."

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

    Nicky Robinson

It's about how much Wales are going to run the ball, kick the ball and put pressure on Portugal, they are not going to suddenly change their game plan for one game.

It looks great on paper but sometimes the reality can be different when you're playing a side like Portugal.

  20. Wales giving Portugal 'the respect they deserve'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Wales v Portugal (16:45 BST)

Despite the score on their previous meeting and being clear favourites, Wales are not taking Portugal lightly.

We all saw what happened when Uruguay threatened to upset hosts France on Thursday.

Wales defence coach Mike Forshaw insists Wales fully respect Portugal.
