  2. 'A nice personal milestone'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Ireland 59-16 Tonga

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton, speaking to ITV: "We're delighted to get five points against a very good team. That's what tonight was about and that was the main objective. We did it, we'll move on and we'll concentrate now on a massive game next week. Playing against the world champions is going to be really special.

On becoming Ireland's record points scorer: "I don't think it is about individual achievements this evening. It is about getting the next win and keep building in this tournament. It's week-on-week in a World Cup and you have got to produce it week after week.

"It's always nice [to score a try], I don't get it too often. It's a lovely personal milestone but I'd much rather a victory."

On South Africa improvements: "We struggled in the breakdown for the first 15/20 minutes. Once we got top grips with that we started playing some better stuff. We had a couple of exits we weren't that happy with. Like with every game, it's never perfect and we will go back and look at it. We try to search on how we can improve week on week."

From Bordeaux to Nantes, Ireland have enjoyed their tour of 'Rugby Country' in the West of France but if they want to progress past the quarter-finals of the competition they will have to do it by conquering Paris.

It's South Africa next at the Stade de France with Scotland at the same venue in the first week of October.

Thereafter it's the knock-out stages, all in Paris. There's still a lot of rugby to be played but Ireland are making steady steps towards the French capital.

That's a pretty awesome result. Ireland are just so ruthless and relentless.

Tonga, we knew they were gong to put up a fight but still the score line is incredible and everything is still just pointing in the right direction for this Irish team and it's a pleasure to watch them at the moment.

The key important thing is that Sexton got another great 40 minutes and there's a lot of positives. The best is yet to come from this Irish team.

  5. 'Full respect to Tonga'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Ireland 59-16 Tonga

Ireland centre, Bundee Aki speaking to RTE: "Full credit to the boys and full respect to Tonga. They came out firing and we knew it was going to be a physical match. Much respect to them, hopefully they go out over the next couple of weeks and leave everything out there.

"I think there are a lot of things we can work on. We weren't as clinical as we wanted to be. There were a lot of dumb penalties, you could say. I know we got the points that we wanted but we'll go away and we're still not happy with how we performed.

"Next week is going to be an even bigger test for us but we will go out there and give it our best."

All the bits are falling into place.

Sexton had a huge influence yet gain on that opening half. He was quite outstanding, he just has that... it's not an x-factor, it's an assured quality and control that he brings to the pivotal position and every time he's there we've got it and others now can play off that.

    FT: Ireland 59-16 Tonga

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

It was a competent Irish performance.

Both teams started slowly and then Ireland took off in the second quarter. Bundee Aki was absolutely outstanding and there were a lot of good individual performances and a lot of the guys that came on did make their mark, so there are choices for Andy Farrell.

    A satisfying 80 minutes and a well-deserved win without a doubt.

Andy Farrell will know there are bigger challenges to come (hello, South Africa and Scotland) but he must be thrilled with how clinical and professional his side have been in their opening games.

Especially when you consider how many problems Samoa and their physicality caused Ireland in their warm-up match, but Tonga didn't have an answer today.

He definitely grounded the ball that time!

A well-taken try by Herring and that is some score for Ireland.

59-16, that is a huge win by any standard.

Try - Ireland 59-16 Tongapublished at 22:04 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Rob Herring (80 mins)

After James Lowe squandered a chance to the cherry on top of the cake, Tonga make a mess of their own line out and Rob Herring is there to power over.

He had one chalked off earlier, but there's no mistake with this one.

Ross Byrne converts, and that will be that.

Bundee Aki is a no-brainer for the next game. He's earned that number 12 shirt, with all respect to Robbie Henshaw.

We've a stoppage with five minutes to go for some treatment to Tonga hooker Sam Moli.

The Irish fans in the stadium are certainly enjoying themselves to 'I will survive' by Gloria Gaynor.

Rob Herring, waiting to take the line out, looks like he wants to join in but he's the ultimate professional and holds off any intrusive thoughts.

Ireland have moved up through the gears and have finished this one with seven minutes to play.

Tonga may be playing for pride but they are still going forward but Fine Insi spills the ball off Charles Piutau's offload.

  20. 'Greater urgency from Ireland'published at 21:54 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 52-16 Tonga

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

There's a far greater urgency about Ireland in this final part of the game.

That's a lovely try, Casey does very well and Aki, he's had another very big game tonight.

I would rate Aki as one of the go-to players in this Ireland squad.
