Two against Romania and now two tonight.

Tadhg Beirne and Bundee Aki both have three tries this tournament, the most of the World Cup to date, as Ireland look to build up their points difference.

Aki has had a big performance in that 12 shirt. He showed a good turn of pace there and that will certainly seal the game off now, a perfect finish by Aki.

    Bundee Aki (64 mins)

    Game. Set. Match.

Aki runs the line off James Lowe, receives the ball and carves his way to the line.

He's been pretty quiet tonight by his usual standards, but that's a brilliant try.

Byrne does the rest from the tee.

We've still 19 minutes to play in Nantes.

Ireland should be able to see this one out but they won't want to give Tonga hope.

  7. 'Lowe try should restore some confidence in Ireland'published at 21:41 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 38-16 Tonga

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

That was badly needed to restore some self confidence in this Ireland side.

Well taken by Lowe. He made it look very, very easy. A well deserved try and that should settle any nerves for Ireland. I don't know if nerves is quite the word to use but it should settle any disorganisation that's out there.

  8. converted try

Converted try - Ireland 38-16 Tongapublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    James Lowe (59 mins)

And there it is! That should be enough!

James Lowe bellows for the ball off the back of the maul and he does the rest.

That's his first World Cup try for Ireland, and you'd say it won't be his last.

    Ross Byrne adds the conversion.

  11. 'A lot of poor mistakes'published at 21:35 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 31-16 Tonga

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

There has been a lot of quality in the play, a lot of good individual play but a lot of poor mistakes as well with the ball being turned over. The ball seems to be slippery at times.

  12. Replacementpublished at 21:34 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 21-16 Tonga

This is all rather scrappy, if we're being polite.

It suits Ireland in a sense as Tonga can't build up a head of steam, but Andy Farrell's men will be looking for that killer score to see this one off.

Craig Casey is on for Conor Murray as Ireland kick a penalty to the corner.

    Ireland 31-16 Tonga

Fifita looks to break away at the other end and he spills it just as the green space began to open up for him!

If he kept hold of the ball he would have been hard to stop!

  14. No try - Ireland 31-16 Tongapublished at 21:30 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

That seems a touch harsh but we won't quibble (as long as Ireland win from here).

The TMO picked up that Herring, after being tackled, propelled himself over the line using his knees.

    No try and Tonga clear.

Ireland win a penalty right under the posts and will look to run it from here.

Rob Herring assumes responsibility and he burrows his way over the line!

    Ireland 31-16 Tonga

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

It's all a little bit messy at the moment. You certainly worry if the Tongans find a way to get the next points on the board, I wont say it's vital Ireland score next but it would certainly help.

  17. Replacementspublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

Finlay Bealham is forced off nine minutes after coming on. Furlong got a brief rest but is back on in his place.

  18. Postpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 31-16 Tonga

Ireland have steadied the ship here after Tonga's 10 points without reply either side of half time.

They're holding the ball in Tonga's half, happy to be patient and wait for gaps to open.

  19. CLOSE!published at 21:22 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 31-16 Tonga

How on earth did RIngrose not score?!

Conor Murray dinks a superb wee kick through and the bounces deceives Fekitoa.

Ringrose looks like he will pounce on the ball but he somehow misses it and slaps the turf in frustration.

    Ireland 31-16 Tonga

Havili has been superb from the tee but he's made a bit of a blunder there are he sends it out on the full from outside his 22.

O'Mahony is back on as Ireland are restored to their 15 players.
