Tonga will be happy with that.

A great finish to the first half and a good start to the second half for the Tongans.

The score line at the end probably flatters Tonga a bit. Ireland have certainly been in control of most of that first half but Tonga have been fighting really, really hard.

They've made a few crucial turn overs when Ireland could have scored more, so all in all it wasn't a perfect and complete first half from Ireland.

    HT: Ireland 31-13 Tonga

Right, the players are back out and we'll be back under way shortly.

With the bonus-point (and Sexton's history) secured, it will be interesting to see how Ireland approach the second half.

Could Tonga capitalise one any potential complacency, or will the favourites add to their tally?

  7. Superb Sextonpublished at 21:11 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

Just the 24 points for Johnny Sexton in Ireland's opener against Romania.

Another 16 in the first half tonight as he makes history.

You don't often see players overly celebrate tries, but you can tell Sexton really enjoyed that one in his historic moment.

Ireland's record points scorer Johnny Sexton cruised under the posts to score his third try of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It was always going to happen that way, wasn't it? What a moment!

Former Ireland out-half David Humphreys is sitting just metres away from me at the Stade de la Beaujoire working for an Irish broadcaster.

As Sexton slipped under the posts David sat in awe and fully immersed himself in the moment. Total respect from one Irish sporting legend to another.

I think Ireland have built on last week against a different quality of opposition. Yes, it's Tonga's first game but they are a stronger side than the Romanians and Ireland have been in control of the majority of that first half until they received that yellow card.

31-13 at half time, in the build up to that South Africa game in two weeks time, we're in a good place. A good performance and a good 40 minutes.

    And breathe!

That was a relentless first half in Nantes.

Five tries and a record-breaking score. And we're only 40 (and a bit) minutes in.

    Mack Hansen is a rockstar.

The 25-year-old's pants did the talking post-match last week but it's his feet tonight.

Every time he touches the ball there's an air of anticipation in the stadium and most of the time he delivers.

    Vaea Fifita (48 mins)

Another scrum right under the posts and they finally make it count!

Former All Black Fifita managed to get a run on the Irish line and Doris can't stop his opposite number from two metres out.

Havili continues his 100% rate from the tee.

You have to say that Tonga deserve that.

    Ireland 31-6 Tonga

Peter O'Mahony is shown a yellow card by Wayne Barnes as Tonga win a number of penalties right on the Irish line.

We're deep into the red and Tonga are deep in the Irish half.

They opt for the scrum with their man advantage in the pack.

  17. 'A wonderful achievement'published at 20:52 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ireland 31-6 Tonga

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

He knew as he was coming up under the posts that this was a big score and you can see the reaction of his team-mates.

A wonderful achievement by Johnny Sexton and I have to say, a superb try.

Should probably add that is the bonus point secured before the break.

That could be so important in the context of this ultra-competitive Pool B with South Africa and Scotland to come.

    Breaking

    Johnny Sexton (39 mins)

    HE'S DONE IT!

Johnny Sexton is Ireland's all-time record points scorer and what a way to do it!

He surpasses Ronan O'Gara, who scored 1083 points in the green jersey!

Garry Ringrose made a superb break and Sexton, at the age of 38, is there to collect the pass and race over untouched.

Just for good measure he's added the conversion. What a player!

  20. No try - Ireland 24-6 Tongapublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Ronan Kelleher (37 mins)

Ronan Kelleher breaks away from the maul and powers over the line, but William Havili does really well to get under the Irish hooker and hold the ball up.

    No try, and Tonga clear!
