    FT: Wales 40-6 Australia

Well I don't think many saw that coming but the party will be going on long into the night in Lyon where Wales have beaten - no - thumped, Australia.

Gareth Davies scored his eighth World Cup try for a 16-6 half-time lead before Nick Tompkins got his first and Jac Morgan completed a record win over the Wallabies.

Wales even overcame the early loss of Dan Biggar with replacement Gareth Anscombe delivering a man-of-the-match display with 23 points.

For Australia and Eddie Jones, the inquest will begin immediately as they are close to being knocked out of a World Cup in the pool stage for the first time.

But Wales march on. They have a two-week break before facing Georgia in Nantes but a quarter-final place is already guaranteed with a match to spare, with either Japan or Argentina the likely opponents.

Join us tomorrow morning for all the reaction and live coverage of the Scrum V World Cup podcast from Lyon.

    Goodnight!

There's a golden chance for Wales to go far in this tournament now. We have to win the next game against Georgia first and then we'll likely play Argentina.

Then I'd expect us to go through to the semi-finals and that's one game where anything can happen.

That was an outstanding Wales performance, one of the best we've probably seen since the 2019 World Cup. Everyone stood up and put in a fantastic performance.

This team can now go in to the quarter-finals and who knows? Let's aim for the semis and see what is possible!

  4. Biggar injury 'not significant' - Gatlandpublished at 22:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Wales 40-6 Australia

Commenting on Dan Biggar's injury, Warren Gatland told the post-match press conference: "Dan's got a stretched pec, we're not too sure.

"I haven't spoken to the medics, but I spoke to Dan, they're saying probably a couple of weeks.

"We've got 13 days before Georgia, so that poentially rules him out of that match.

    "It's not a signigicant injury."

  5. 'Today was an outstanding performance' - Gatlandpublished at 22:50 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Wales 40-6 Australia

Wales head coach Warren Gatland said in the post-match press conference: "I thought it would be a close game, in fairness we've had a great week training in terms of preparation.

"We put a lot of work in in the last four months as a team together and we know that we're a momentum team, we build on confidence.

"We saw yesterday Portugal are not a bad side and considering the number of changes we made, and I felt we didn't get enough credit for the Fiji performance.

"Everyone was talking about how unlucky Fiji were, we kept that pretty much to ourselves.

"I thought today was an outstanding performance in terms of what we wanted to achieve and game management."

This Australia team haven't got any players that have a huge amount of experience and there has been a lot of chopping and changing.

If you constantly do this it is very hard to develop your game, belief, trust and you're ability to execute when your under fatigue and pressure and when you're in a World Cup, there is no more pressure than what we've seen tonight.

  7. One eye on potential Argentina quarter-finalpublished at 22:46 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Wales 40-6 Australia

Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell told on S4C: "At times it has felt that Wales had fallen out of love with rugby but this team are bringing the fans back towards Welsh rugby and long may that continue.

"The team know they've put themselves in a good position but they've only got out of the group, it looks like Argentina they'll play in the quarter-finals and they'll be preparing for that now."

Who would have believed this six months ago? Who would have believed this four weeks ago that Wales would be in this position?

To put 40 points on Australia, that says a lot about the Welsh team and the character.

  9. 'The pack were superb' - McBrydepublished at 22:41 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Wales 40-6 Australia

Former Wales hooker and forwards coach Robin McBryde told S4C: "Warren Gatland understands what is crucial to the Welsh game, he sent me a text before the game and at the end said, 'It's a big game'.

"He doesn't normally say much, the players stepped up today and performed for him.

"The pack were superb, the set-pieces became a weapon, asking questions of Australia and they didn't want it. It was a huge psychological loss to them."

Wales played simple rugby, keeping the scoreboard ticking over while Australia were making mistakes and giving penalties away and made it easy for Wales.

It's hard to tell if Australia were that bad or Wales were brilliant or a mix of the two.

Wales centre George North speaking on ITV said: "This win is up there for sure in terms of World Cup wins.

"We're getting towards that 80 minute performance and to be three from three we can't complain.

"Huge effort from the boys and we kicked on from the game against Portugal and it was a very dominant performance.

"Every four years Gareth Davies seems to peak! It's three months of graft and you get what you put in and we're seeing that now.

"We were harsh on ourselves after Fiji and we're not quite having those 80 minute performances yet, still things to tidy up, but to do that to Australia is pretty good."

I back Eddie Jones. He hasn't made any friends in his short tenure but now is not the time to make another change, now is a time to look at the systems, academies, look at how we get this Wallabies team to being back to a real force globally.

Australia head coach Eddie Jones has said at the post-match press conference: "I remain committed to the Australia project. I still believe I am the person to turn things around.

“I was put in this job to turn Australia around and I don’t think I could have done it with the players we had.

“This is the most painful time but also the best time to learn for young players."

On being linked with the Japan job next year Jones said: "I don't know what you are talking about mate.

"I take umbrage to people questioning my commitment to the Australia job."

You've got to find a silver lining. This Wallabies team and the entire Rugby Australia need to look at what we can take out of this as an opportunity to grow from it.

The team needs to understand how significant this moment is.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland on ITV: "It was a pretty good performance but I thought our line speed could improve.

"Once we got a bit of confidence and a bit of momentum we were on top.

"We've worked so hard and you get what you deserve and we deserved to win today.

"We know how much defence has dominated for us in the past and not conceding a try was superb.

"The message at the end was to go for a bonus point but we can't be too greedy.

"Gareth Davies is a fantastic individual and person, he was disappointed some years ago being left out and was going to give the game up.

"But today he defended very well, we're lucky to have two fantastic nines one with more experience than the other so we're pretty fortunate

"We've got a gap before the next game and the players can have two or three days with their families and enjoy tonight before we start thinking about Georgia."
