  1. 'Game plan is working' - Lakepublished at 43 mins

    Wales 19-6 Australia

Wales co-captain Dewi Lake on S4C:

"There's nothing to complain about really, I don't think Australia have tested us at all, the defence has been superb and we've used the game plan we discussed in the week and it's working.

"This week's message was that Australia were desperate today and desperation can make teams to good things.

"They're going to throw the ball around so the message was to slow their ball down and capitalise on their mistakes."

  2. Penalty - Wales 19-6 Australiapublished at 42 mins

    Gareth Anscombe

And that's why Australia will miss Slipper. First scrum of the second half, Wales win a penalty and Anscombe boots another three. Perfect start for Wales.

  3. Replacement: Australiapublished at 41 mins

    Wales 16-6 Australia

Veteran prop James Slipper is off, replaced at half-time by Pone Fa'amausili.

Interesting call if that's not an injury as he was bossing the scrums... according to Wayne Barnes that is.

  4. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Wales 16-6 Australia

That will do nicely for Wales. They hold up the receiver and win the scrum.

We're underway in Lyon. Can Wales hold on?

  6. 'Wales haven't put a foot wrong'published at 21:02 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    Chris Horsman
Former Wales coach on BBC Radio Wales

Wales haven't put a foot wrong while Australia have made some poor decisions.

With a 10-point lead going in at half time, if I'm Warren Gatland, then I'm telling them: "more of the same in the second-half lads."

    Nicky Robinson
Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half on BBC Radio Cymru

I was worried with Australia looking dangerous but Gareth Anscombe's interception, stopping a Wallaby try and then Wales going up the other end and getting points. Those are the turning points in games.

There are a lot of positives for Wales in that half. I feel a lot better than I did after 10 to 15 minutes, as the half went on Wales' defence came into the game and the scrum.

I really feel positive for the second half.

  8. Happy Wales fans?published at 20:59 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

C'mon Welsh fans, you've got to be happy with that 40 mins?!

    Thumbs up or down.

  9. Wales building the score nicely'published at 20:58 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    HT: Wales 16-6 Australia

    James Hook
Former Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

It was a perfect start for Wales, a wonderful set-piece try that set the tone for the game.

Gareth Anscombe has settled in really well and Wales are building the score nicely.

As long as we make our shots on the big ball carriers I think we will be ok.

  10. Wales defence the differencepublished at 20:57 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    HT: Wales 16-6 Australia

There's the old saying of lies, damned lies and statistics but this is telling.

Tackles made: Wales 103, Australia 41

That tells you the shape of the game, but the most important stat is on the scoreboard.

  11. 'That was a great first half'published at 20:55 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    HT: Wales 16-6 Australia

    Josh Navidi
Former Wales and British and Irish Lions back row on BBC Radio Wales

It was a great first half, exciting stuff and we're going in comfortably 10 points ahead.

I know Australia have had a lot of ball but its been a big defensive set up from Wales.

The message in the changing room now will be keep doing what you are doing.

I've been nervous throughout that half the butterflies are still in my stomach!

You know that one mistake could change the momentum, I still think the game will be in the balance until the final whistle.

  13. Wales in controlpublished at 20:53 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    HT: Wales 16-6 Australia

    Stirling Mortlock
Former Australia international on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has been hard work for the Australian's, they have had no pay for a lot of the territory they have had.

The irony is that this points margin will only increase Australia to not go for points but go for tries.

George North should have given that ball first time to Louis Rees-Zammit but he stepped inside and then gave it.

I'm not 100% Rees-Zammit would have scored but he would have had a lot more space if he'd have had it earlier.

I'm enjoying this. Australia have had more possession they are keeping the ball for a little bit longer but they are not really going anywhere. Wales' defence has been fantastic.

  16. Half-time - Wales 16-6 Australiapublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

That was the last play, advantage was over and Wales lead at the break.

It's been a breathless half but how much would a try have been worth for Wales then? So close.

  17. Oh close!published at 40 mins

    Wales 16-6 Australia

Wales have advantage but spread the ball wide, George North releases Louis Rees-Zammit who cuts inside but brilliant defence holds him over the line. Oh a try then would have put Wales well ahead.

  18. 'It's nice to see the learnings from Fiji and Portugal'published at 39 mins

    Wales 13-6 Australia

    Josh Navidi
Former Wales and British and Irish Lions back row on BBC Radio Wales

It's nice to see those learnings from Fiji and Portugal.

In the middle third we aren't looking to run the ball, everyone is chasing everything down and there is a lot of control from Wales.

  19. Penalty - Wales 16-6 Australiapublished at 38 mins

    Gareth Anscombe

The replacement adds another three and Wales have a ten-point lead.

  20. Postpublished at 37 mins

Oh that looked a little harsh. The ball appeared to have popped out the back of a ruck and Rob Valetini pounced but Wayne Barnes rules the number eight was off his feet.
