This time the kick pass from Damian Penaud is on the money. Louis Bielle-Biarrey still had so much to do but steps around a couple of defenders.

    Remember he is only 20.

Damian Penaud slides around a couple of Italian defenders but his grubber kick has too much on it for Louis Bielle-Biarrey.

That lad is very good at rugby!

Italy take a minute to calm things down before Tommaso Allan punts the ball into the France half.

Damian Penaud with the finish, so much intent from France in the opening exchanges.

Two big carries from the number eight Gregory Alldritt - the perfect start for France.

    He loves a try.

France have a go down the short side and simple hands does the job as Thomas Ramos puts Damian Penaud over.

    Too easy!

France’s winger Damien Penaud is in fine try-scoring form. He is currently on a six-game scoring streak at international level.

Another try for Les Bleus will tie him second with Vincent Clerc as France’s second all-time top try-scorer on 33 tries.

Serge Blanco tops that leaderboard with 38 tries.

  14. Battle of the bootpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 6 October 2023

    France v Italy (20:00 BST)

Italy’s Tommaso Allan is yet to miss a kick at this year's World Cup.

France’s Thomas Ramos has kicked 41 points in two matches – including 12 conversions in the 96-0 win over Namibia.

So we have quite the battle tonight from the kicking tee.

Italy's 96-17 loss to New Zealand last week is "well and truly gone", says Paolo Odogwu.

Victory over France should be enough to send Italy into the last eight for the first time at the 10th attempt.

"It was a freak game and they don't happen often," said the Italy wing.

“"I think it's well and truly gone now.

“For us, we had to realise that is not our standard, we know we are better than that.

"We have come in this week, had one meeting about it and now we have reset and are focusing on France."

Can France cope without Antoine Dupont?

Tonight will give us plenty of answers but will Maxime Lucu play a bigger role than many expect?

If Dupont is not fit for the quarter-final Lucu could put a lot of French minds at rest.

Maxime Lucu has tried to "manage the expectation" as he deputises for France captain Antoine Dupont and wants to enjoy the big moment.

Lucu will start at scrum-half while Dupont continues his recovery from a fractured cheekbone.

"The pressure has been on for two weeks now, after Antoine's injury,” said 30-year-old Lucu.

“A captain getting injured is a major factor at a World Cup. I've had a lot of messages, but I've turned my phone off and concentrated on the past two weeks."

“My game is different to Antoine's so there's no comparison. I've been trying to do that for the past 10 days, to manage the expectation, the pressure and the role I have to play. But above all, I want to enjoy the moment.

"When you're a substitute for Antoine, the captain and number nine, you're prepared for [having little playing time]. These are things we work on.”
