    England 8-17 Samoa

England have not lost a RWC pool match since facing Australia at Twickenham in 2015. A particularly dark day that one.

Marcus Smith is on for George Ford. Plan or panic?

England scored that try and they thought they were in for a good day, but Samoa had other ideas.

England have had to step up their game.

Ragged, out of shape, dislocated. England playing like my knees.

England, who have beaten Samoa on all eight previous meetings, eat more points as Samoa kick an easy penalty. The referee says there were two offsides and a no-arms tackle there. So just the three offences.

    England 8-14 Samoa

England absolutely on the ropes. Fritz Lee and Danny Toala both do brilliantly to beat a man with England offside on a couple of occasions. Eventually they kick to the corner and Nigel Ah-Wong nearly has a hat-trick but England touch it down.

  7. Replacementpublished at 45 mins

    England 8-14 Samoa

Tom Curry is in the wars again and has to go off so England send on Billy Vunipola. Maybe he can kickstart something against Theo McFarland and co.

From a team of really good, and I mean REALLY good players, Borthwick seems to conjured up a severe case of mediocrity.

George Ford did superbly to get back and scrag Duncan Paia'aua there when the Samoa full-back seemed set for the corner.

Half-time doesn't seem to have changed the momentum in this match.

England are not accurate enough, they need to make the game so simple it almost bores Samoa into making a mistake.

It was George Ford who got back to make the saving tackle on Duncan Paia'aua. Brilliant recovery.

Ford & Farrell do now link up but Manu Tuilagi then loses the ball and Samoa are on the counter! They look like scoring too down the left but England scramble back to recover...

  13. Midfield conundrumspublished at 43 mins

    England 8-14 Samoa

Where you fit Frank Lampard/Paul Scholes/Steven Gerrard/Owen Farrell into a midfield is a World Cup talking point of the ages. The questions will continue to come after that shoddy first half. Unless Farrell and George Ford knit it together in the next half hour or so.

It was cruel and borderline and very late to disallow that last Samoa try. As a fan of England, Ireland, and great rugby, I'd love to see Samoa progress. I'm glad England are being tested. To reach the final will take serious teamwork. Is this shaking up to be the greatest World Cup?

This is undoubtedly the worst England team at any World Cup. Led by a group of coaches who are clearly well out of their depth. Borthwick was supposed to rebuild the team from the set-piece and defence. Both of which have fallen apart. Truly abject.

He may not have played great in that half but inaccurate seems a bit harsh. A reminder of the below:

    1. Owen Farrell (2012- ) - 1,181
    2. Jonny Wilkinson (1998-2011) - 1,179
    3. Paul Grayson (1995-2004) - 400
    4. Rob Andrew (1985-1997) - 396
    5. George Ford (2014- ) - 365

Farrell doesn’t deserve a place in this side. Slow of pace, slow of thought, inaccurate from the tee and a liability due to lack of discipline. Why are we playing players out of position just to accommodate him?

  20. Scheduling questions?published at 17:48 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

My issues with the format of the Rugby World Cup could fill half-time and then some but England played the reserves against Chile, then had a week off, and are now playing a dead rubber.

Is it any surprise they don't look tuned?
