In his post match press conference, Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "We're incredibly disappointed. Argentina are incredibly tough and physical and stayed in the fight.

"That game could have gone either way.

"We were not at our best but still could have won."

Wales captain Jac Morgan said: "We're gutted but full credit to Argentina they took their chances well."

    It's the inconsistency.

The referee said, "I've called tackle" but whether he called tackle or not Nick Tompkins has been hit in the head with a shoulder - or definitely the bicep - and it's late.

I've seen red cards been given for far less!

I said it just before the first half ended - it's how you deal with Argentina in that first 10 minutes of the second half.

We knew they were going to come out firing, there was a lot of passion, you knew they were going to give everything in that 10 minutes and we just couldn't get out of it!

You've got to give a lot of credit to Argentina, the way they came back.

For 38 minutes there was only one team in it [Wales] and then the tide started to turn, three points, six points and then going into half-time at 10-6, it completely changed the second half.

Wales had moments in the second half but it was all Argentina, they tidied up the breakdown and they were the better side in the second half, it's as simple as that.

Two key players for Wales went into that game injured or carrying injuries and they both left the field before the end of play, which meant that Wales' shape was all over the shop.

An injured Dan Biggar playing at 12 - we'll have to ask questions about that.

It's so hard to take with all the work they've put in over the last few months and we can just see the boys now with their hands on their heads, you can see they're zapped and it was there, just in reach, and they just let it slip.

Argentinian winger and player of the match Emiliano Boffelli on S4C: "We knew it was going to be a difficult game but we won the match and I'm very happy for the team.

"We needed to keep going at half time because we were doing well and we knew at some point the game would open for us."

Wales co-captain Dewi Lake on S4C: "The emotios are running high at the moment, we're gutted as a group from missing out on the final four, all the work we've done over the past four months to get to this point.

"At the start of the campaign not many people thought we'd get out of the group and we came into this game as favourites and full credit to Argentina they left everything out there as did we but our accuracy let us down a bit.

"You're never going to find the words to describe the emotions, but we'll learn from this, we're a young group and we'll be here again and be better.

"We've played for 80 minutes and it wasn't to be but no complaints from me, everyone left everything out there and fair play to Argentina."

Argentina took their chances, their accuracy was a lot better, every time Argentina came into Wales' 22 they left with something.

The disappointment is that Wales have underperformed. We spoke in the first half, if George North's pass to Josh Adams goes to hand it could have been completely different.

Wales didn't take the points when they were ahead.

Andrew: Argentina continue their excellent RWC record, semi finalists in 2007, 2015 and now 2023. A team who always seem to be able to fire themselves up and peak at the right moment.

Jimmy: Absolutely gutted for the Welsh, but Argentina was superb. Didn't panic when they went behind, and were relentless.

    We're lost for words.

In the second half, Argentina just turned the screw.

Tomos Williams was very good when he came on, he was a running threat, he scored a lovely try from nothing, really.

Argentina just pinned Wales back, they put pressure on Wales.

Their driving mauls started to work, their carries in the 22 started to work. I know we'll probably go to that incident with Nick Tompkins - that seemed to change the momentum with the fans and with the Welsh players, they looked deflated after that.

  12. Petti no card explainedpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    FT: Wales 17-29 Argentina

In case you are wondering, here's the conversation between referee Karl Dickson and TV match official Marius Jonker regarding the challenge by Guido Petti into Nick Tompkins.

The Argentina lock made contact with Tompkins' head but was not shown a card.

Instead Argentina had a penalty from a previous foul and scored moments later.

Tompkins was forced to leave the field for a HIA.

Dickson: “The player is falling as he is releasing, and the player falls into him. I’m at no foul play, he comes into the breakdown legally and the player falls down.

"On field at the moment we’re at no foul play, because I called tackle then the player falls significantly, the blue player is bent at the waist and comes in legally. Do you see anything different?"

Jonker: “No I don’t see anything different but I think it’s important you explain this and I’m with you on this.”

Dan Biggar wasn't 100%, Liam Williams wasn't 100% and when you have two crucial players like that not at their best carrying injuries, it's made it difficult for Wales.

But there were too many mistakes, we had chances and we left the points out on the pitch in the first half.

Fair play to Argentina, they stayed in the game, built the points and scored two tries in the final half hour.

No question Michael Cheika and his coaching staff knew something had to change for Argentina.

We have spoken about big games and big decisions and that Argentina side shifted considerably in that second-half. Wales did not know how to counter it.

Watching Wales in the first-half was a total joy. I cannot believe the side who played England in the first game of this World Cup is in the semi-final - it has blown my mind.

Sam Costelow tried to find Tomos Williams on the loop, a move which has worked well today but unfortunately the old head Sanchez has read the pass.

The dream is over, Wales haven't been good enough today, that's what has cost them. Apart from the first 15 minutes, injuries have cost us too. Argentina deserve this victory.
