So that's the first game done for Wales at the inaugural WXV tournament.

Tries from forwards pair Carys Phillips and Georgia Evans raised Welsh hopes of a shock win over Canada at half-time.

Alex Callender got on the scoresheet in the second half.

But poor discipline saw the penalty count rack up against Wales and Canada eventually turned that into points with a total of six tries.

Ioan Cunningham's side are going to have to learn fast - next up are world champions and hosts New Zealand!

So join us again next Saturday morning to see how Wales get on.

Wales can be pleased with a lot of that game.

The kicking threat is a different level to where it has been but they have to work on the defence.

Wales need to approach New Zealand similar to this game, Jazz Joyce is one of the biggest threats Wales have got in attack but New Zealand know her really well and will try to isolate her.

Ioan Cunningham speaking to ITV: "Territory and possession are key and we lacked a lot of that in the second half, that's something we look to tidy up against The Black Ferns next week

"Up front we want to be physical, good set piece and who knows we are looking forward to it."

Wales captain Hannah Jones said: "Canada are the fourth ranked side in the world but we definitely gave them a run for their money.

"We stuck at it, the pack gave us a great platform but we have to look at our discipline for the next two games.

"We will take the positives from this, we had a decent set-piece and scored some good tries. We will re-group and go again against New Zealand next up."

  6. 'We matched Welsh physicality - De Goedepublished at 05:56 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    FT: Canada 42-22 Wales

Canada captain and player of match Sophie de Goede said: "It was a fun game. We came her off the back of two losses to England and we were disappointed not to get a win from those.

"Wales are super physical with quality players so we're happy to get the win and we will take that into the next two games.

"Physicality was a key thing. It's a big focus for Wales so we wanted to get off the line quickly and match them in that area, which I think we did for the most part."

The first half was really positive, Wales really challenged Canada but the second half Wales probably didn't start as strong as they would like to and that was the biggest difference.

    Alex Callender

It was a lovely cross-field kick from Lleucu George that Lisa Neuman took on the full.

It looked a high tackle to stop her scoring in the corner but she got back to her feet and Callender crashes over.
