Last weekend's victory over Scotland saw Italy celebrate their first home win in the Six Nations since 2013.

None of the class of 2013 remain in the squad today - this is an exciting new era under head coach Gonzalo Quesada.

The Argentine took over from Kieran Crowley after Italy's dismal World Cup campaign, in which they crashed out in the group stage after shipping 96 points to New Zealand and 60 against France.

Italy conceded 22 tries in last year's Six Nations and their place in the championship was again called into question.

But they have only leaked 13 after five games this year as Quesada has tightened the defence while continuing to promote attacking rugby.

Italy now have the opportunity to match their highest Six Nations finish of fourth set in 2007 and 2013.

If other results go their way they could even rise to an unprecedented third.

  11. North's emotional goodbyepublished at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2024

    Wales v Italy (14:15 GMT)

George North's press conference this week would have have stirred the hardest of hearts.

He struggled to contain his emotions as he explained why he is stepping away from international rugby at 31.

Since making his debut in 2010, the nation has watched North turn from a boy into a Welsh rugby icon.

A glittering career has included four Six Nations titles, two Grand Slams and four World Cups, where he featured in two semi-finals.

North's retirement feels like the end of an era with Alun Wyn Jones, Justin Tipuric, Rhys Webb, Dan Biggar and Leigh Halfpenny also calling time on their Test careers in the last year.

*Warning, some viewers may find this press conference emotional

Wales head coach Warren Gatland: "This is an important game for us. We definitely don't want to finish bottom and the squad is hungry to win.

"We're still looking for that 80-minute performance and have spoken about needing to be better in the big moments especially.

"We understand that external pressure and expectation comes with international rugby. It's about embracing that, continuing the hard work and fronting up in training to go out there and be accurate and disciplined."

Italy coach Gonzalo Quesada has made three changes from the win over Scotland.

Full-back Ange Capuozzo is absent after breaking his finger in that game, with Zebre's Lorenzo Pani replacing him.

Wales-born scrum-half Stephen Varney is selected ahead of Martin Page-Relo after he came on to score a try against the Scots.

In the pack, Lorenzo Cannone gets the nod at number eight in place of Exeter's Ross Vintcent, who drops to the bench.

Italy team in full: Pani; Lynagh, Brex, Menoncello, Ioane; P Garbisi, Varney; Fischetti, Nicotera, Ferrari, Cannone, Ruzza, Negri, Lamaro (capt), L Cannone.

Replacements: Lucchesi, Spagnolo, Zilocchi, Zambonin, Vintcent, Zuliani, Page-Relo, Marin.

Wales have recalled centre George North who shocked the rugby world this week in announcing today will be his final Test match after 121 caps.

North's midfield partner Nick Tompkins is also back as Warren Gatland makes five changes after the defeat by France.

They replace last week's partnership of Owen Watkin and Joe Roberts.

Dillon Lewis is preferred to Keiron Assiratti at tight-head prop, while captain Dafydd Jenkins reverts to lock with Alex Mann returning to the back row.

A fit again Tommy Reffell is named at flanker, while lock Will Rowlands is dropped to the bench.

Scarlets prop Harri O'Connor could make his debut having been included in one of the most inexperienced Wales' replacement benches.

Wales team in full: Winnett; Adams, North, Tompkins, Dyer; Costelow, T Williams; Thomas, Dee, Lewis, Jenkins (capt), Beard, Mann, Reffell, Wainwright.

Replacements: E Lloyd, Mathias, H O'Connor, Rowlands, Martin, Hardy, I Lloyd, Grady.

  16. Let's kick off Super Saturdaypublished at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2024

    Wales v Italy (14:15 GMT)

Good afternoon and welcome to Cardiff for the first of three matches on this Six Nations Super Saturday.

It's not the finale Welsh fans would have wanted - there's no Grand Slam or championship up for grabs, just the dreaded wooden spoon.

Warren Gatland's side currently prop up the table with four straight defeats, while Italy are fifth with a win and a draw to their name.

Wales have only ever won the wooden spoon once before, back in 2003, and they have their work cut out against a rejuvinated Azzuri side this afternoon.

Let's take a look how the teams line up.
