Well it lived up to the billing with late drama.

It's always so close between these sides but who could have imagined it would go down to almost the last kick.

Poor Lleucu George will be gutted at that late missed 78th minute conversion that could have snatched a draw.

Scotland, however, were well worth their first win in Cardiff in the Six Nations.

They dominated possession and territory, did well to nullify the Welsh pack and looked so sharp with tries from Coreen Grant and Rhona Lloyd.

Sisilia Tuipulotu and Alex Callender hit back for Wales but they were always chasing the game.

It's going to get a whole lot harder for both teams next week.

Scotland welcome France while Wales travel to face champions England.

Scotland survived a late Wales comeback to secure a first Women's Six Nations victory on Welsh soil in 20 years.

Lleucu George missed a 79th minute conversion which would have secured a draw after Alex Callender's try.

Scotland led thanks to tries from Coreen Grant and Rhona Lloyd, while Sisilia Tuipulotu crossed to get Wales back in the game.

But there was to be no late heartbreak for Scotland this year as they extend their winning streak to seven matches.

Scotland fly-half Helen Nelson told BBC Two: Yeah we knew it would be a tight game but you always hope it won't be that close and come down to the final play.

We talked about it a lot at half time, keeping composure, cool heads and sticking to our strategy.

We were really happy with our first 20 minutes but we know we took our foot off it.

Really proud of the girls, we got on the front foot that second half and took our chances.

When you've got a secret weapon like Emma Orr who can square up and give balls in front like that, if we get the ball in her hands she can put people away, and the pace of Coreen Grant and Rhona Lloyd it's a strength of ours.

Wales captain Hannah Jones told BBC Two: Scotland definitely brought it to us, they showed great character but we left too much to do towards the end.

It'll be interesting to see how often we went into the opposition 22 and didn't come away with points.

The character and work rate for the team was outstanding but we've got to be more up for it in everything we do and come away from points in the end.

We've got to park this loss and carry on.

Scotland head coach Bryan Easson told BBC Two: It's a historic victory and so much deserved.

Generally we felt first half we didn't take the chances we had in the goal zone.

After we spoke at half time we were comfortable, but we had more in us we needed to squeeze out and we deserved that victory today.

I thought Caity Mattison and Helen Nelson put us in the right areas which made it difficult for Wales to get out.

The wind was strong and we had to manage that and I think we did that second half well.

Seven wins a row for this group is phenomenal and it's a special group.

We've had some tough times and we knew something special was coming from this group and we'll keep growing.

Wales have lost today but this is what we want from the tournament.

We don't want a tournament with France and England out on their own.

We want a tournament where every game is a Test match which tests you mentally and physically.

Wales need to go to England show improvement and bounce back.

It's been a long time coming, it's been 20 years since they've beaten Wales away.

A massive achievement for them and the monkey is off their back a little bit and take this winning momentum into the rest of the Six Nations games.

  9. 'Heartbreaking for Wales'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    FT: Wales 18-20 Scotland

    Rachel Taylor
Former Wales captain and coach on BBC Two

It's heartbreaking but Wales have been on the other end of the foot, like Keira Bevan's kick [at the World Cup] in these moments.

We said from the start of this game it would be close and it's a rel showcase of sport today.

If you think where it was for WXV, some hevay defeats for Wales in that and seven wins in a row for Scotland now.

It shows the belief the Scottish team has.

There's some learnings for Wales there.

The repercussions of this win could be huge.

Scotland will progress to the top tier of WXV later this year if they finish third - as well as automatic qualification for the 2025 World Cup.

Wales could rue that late missed conversion for months to come.

However Wales can't grumble too much, remember Keira Bevan's 80th-minute penalty against Scotland at the last World Cup?!

That is the risk of bringing on someone on their first cap today.

I'm not blaming Sian Jones, it was her decision to kick but there's 14 players around her.

Where are the leaders around her stepping up to support her?

Wales got the ball from the kick-off, the clock ticks into the red but scrum-half Sian Jones kicks into the air and the ball goes out.

Oh no, what was she doing? They had one last attack but it's gone.

She sinks to the ground as the whistle goes and Scotland have won.
