France crush Wales to set up grand slam decider

So France march on for a Grand Slam decider against England next week while the soul-searching continues for Wales.

It's not so much the conceding 40 points that hurts, even though both of the tries for Joanna Grisez were absolute gifts.

After all, Wales conceded 39 to France last year when they on their way to a third-place finish.

What hurts this time is being nilled at home.

Wales dominated territory and possession against the number three ranked side in the world. But they are just not scoring enough points. They have managed just 15 in four hours of rugby against England, Ireland and France.

They now face a MASSIVE game against Italy at the Principality Stadium next week in a desperate bid to avoid the Wooden Spoon and a first whitewash in the Six Nations.

France have a huge game of their own.

Annaelle Deshayes, Romane Menager, Gabrielle Vernier and captain Manae Feleu added to Grisez's double to claim a fourth win in a row before that winner-takes-all clash with England in Bordeaux.

So join us next week for what will be a fascinating Saturday at both ends of the table.

Have we invested this money, time and effort over two years to say we stuck at it? It should be beyond that.

This year Wales should have been saying we want to get France.

If you want the exposure and you want people watching the game you are going to have more opinions, that is the price on the ticket.

If you want to be professional rugby players at the highest level you have got to be setting those standards and you've got to be demanding more of yourselves.

One of the lines Ioan Cunningham said was that he was "really pleased with the girls effort".

I'm looking at the scoreboard and we've just lost 40-nil. For me that just shouldn't come from your head coach.

If I was sat in the changing rooms and we had lost 40-nil then the head coach comes in and says he's really happy with the effort girls well done... I don't think that's acceptable.

We need to raise the standards, we need to expect more from the coaching team and expect more from the players again if we can compete against the likes of France and England.

Wales Head Coach Ioan Cunningham speaking to BBC Radio Wales: "We asked for more grit in our performance and I thought we did that today, it was a much better performance.

"Some unlucky tries potentially in that first half but really pleased with the effort that the players put in.

"Obviously the results aren't good to look at but we can't forget how far we have come as a team.

"We were much worse than what we are now but we are going through a development stage, new caps, transition of the group and it's for the better as we've got a World Cup in hopefully 12 months time.

"It's a great opportunity to play in the Principality Stadium next week and finish with a win. That's what we have been targeting.

"We will patch ourselves up now there are a few bruised bodies there and get excited for the opportunity to finish strong."

Wales Captain Hannah Jones told BBC One Wales: "That was more us this week and I'm proud of the girls and the work rate they've shown.

"We put up a fight against one of the best in the world and I'm proud of that.

"There was some great stuff out there. We played with the ball much more and we are finding our feet in terms of our shape.

"We are going next door (Principality Stadium) next week so we are looking forward to that and would just like to thank the crowds for sticking by us."

It's a tough one. Four losses in this campaign but ultimately Wales have nothing to lose.

They've got to go out there against Italy next week and throw absolutely everything at it because we don't want to be in that sixth spot.

It is no option but to win with a bonus point, so don't play with fear and just go out there and throw everything at it. it's disappointing we are in that position.

  9. 'We must improve our attack'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 21 April

    Rachel Taylor
Former Wales captain and coach on BBC One

We saw more heart, more guts and more grit in that final play when we were still fighting for the ball so that was encouraging.

There's lots to do. Scoring 33 points in this whole tournament so far is just not good enough from an attack point of view and that's a part that needs to be reviewed.

France captain Manae Feleu said: I'm really proud of what the girls produced today but now we get back to work for next week.

"It was really important that we made a statement today ahead of next week's game against England.

"We really want to have the Grand Slam this year and we have worked very hard to get us to this point."

It's a really frustrating time for Wales, they desperately wanted to show improvement and there were elements of it in the first half, but they forced the play too much.

It's a big week ahead for them to avoid that wooden spoon against Italy.

Another wide forced pass that finds the floor. I'm not quite sure why that was an option, tough lessons to be learned by this Welsh team.
