I think the cannon that went into the pack and went wrong is where Ding Junhui's match has also gone wrong. Mark Selby has had two large pieces of luck. Ding has lost the momentum and now these next two frames are huge. There's no way he's going to win if he's giving Selby five frames into the final session.

See 16:34 for the unlucky cannon that John speaks about.

Plenty of you talking about the supposed 'luck' Mark Selby is getting in this session

SC: Selby getting a shed load of luck at the minute. I am surprised that he is still ahead.

Jonathan Friel: If Mark Selby fell out of a window he'd probably go up!

Steven Penn: Selby is a modern day Cliff Thorburn, grinding Ding to death, effective but it is stinking out the crucible, bad for snooker.

Thomas Ross: It is infuriating how lucky Mark Selby is.

That lead has been halved, but the Jester from Leicester is still heading towards world title number two.

Ding Junhui will fight all the way, snooker can change on the turn of a ball, so many things are just fractions. Mark Selby generally has just got his nose in front. Ding is playing catch up, but how does he overhaul him?

  5. Selby restores three-frame advantagepublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 2 May 2016

Mark Selby 13-10 Ding Junhui (118-9, Selby 68)

This is in danger of slipping away from Ding Junhui here and he is going to have to show incredible character to come back from this.

It is another frame for Selby. We're at a crucial phase here and Selby is putting his foot down, in danger of racing out of sight. A break of 68, after some fortune at the start of the frame (as you can see below), puts Selby three ahead, just as he was at the start of the day.

Two frames left in this session. Ding needs to find some form quickly.

Anthony Lawless: Selby nearly took my eye out with that thing. And I'm in the West of Ireland!

Craig Long: I love Selby but would love to see Ding win it this year. Something different.

Here's a man who knows about playing in a world final or six. Jimmy White turns 54 today. 'The Whirlwind' played in six World Championship finals and lost every single one of them. He was in the qualifiers for this year's tournament but went out 10-9 to Gerard Greene.

Patchy progress in the 23rd frame. Will Selby go three ahead? If he takes this one he will be guaranteed a lead going into the final session. He leads 50-9 at the moment.

Remember, we will have a break after 25 frames with the rest being played this evening from seven.

Some hilarity at the Crucible as Mark Selby needs not one, but two extensions to his cue to reach a tricky pot on the red. Thankfully after all the faffing about he makes the pot.

    Mark Selby 12-10 Ding Junhui

In the last frame Ding missed a chance to split the reds up, the experts have been having their say on it.

Steve Davis: "The trouble with trying to predict how the balls will go is amazing. The balls trap each other."

John Parrott: "He was trying to get a thicker contact on it, you're talking millimetres here. Luck plays a part, you can hit a bad shot and it results well, a good shot and it can turn out poor."

Nope. A let-off for Selby. Once again the door was open for Ding to get back level and once again that door is slammed in his face.

Selby is two in front again. Ding has still not been in front at any stage of this final.

A few of your comments after it was revealed that Snooker's 'Triple Crown' - the World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters will be on the BBC until the end of the 2018-19 season.

Samuel Brown: Great news about the BBC, snooker wouldn't be the same without the BBC coverage!

Jayelle Bee: Great to hear Barry Hearn say that snooker will be on the BBC for at least a few more years.

Matthew Adam Stones: I am following your coverage of the snooker in Kampot, Cambodia. Come on Ding!

But things are not often going to plan in this final. Ding loses the table and Selby is back in action. Ding has a lot to think about sitting in his chair, watching Selby move back in front in this frame.

I'm pretty sure if someone could make, or send us, some trousers in the style of John Virgo's old exhibition waistcoats we'd be on for a full Crucible outfit.

This man in the crowd is clearly part of the Hazel Irvine fanclub.

  20. Mission accomplishedpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 2 May 2016

    Mark Selby 11-10 Ding Junhui

The chairman of World Snooker also thinks that the attempts to grow the sport have been successful.

Barry Hearn told BBC Two: "I think it's mission accomplished already in terms of growing the sport. Ding Junhui becoming the first Asian to make a final, and battling back from 6-0 down has already helped and if Ding goes on to win it there will be another increase in take-up."

But Hearn is on the punters' side when it comes to Mark Selby.

"Selby, coupled with Leicester City in a win double, you could afford to retire and buy a small island," added Hearn.
