    Frame 18: Higgins 8-9 Yan

Has Higgins got the upper hand here... Yan looks in trouble but plays a superb safety that creeps behind the brown.

Higgins tries an audacious plant in response but that's gone pear shaped. Yan is on a red to the bottom left corner.

This is some chance to seal a debut Masters win.

    Frame 18: Higgins 8-9 Yan

Yan is going for this but can't drop the red into the bottom right corner.

    He's not left owt.

    Frame 18: Higgins 8-9 Yan

This is going to be one hell of a shot. Blue to the top corner, blind, with the rest.

It's there but he can't get enough of an angle to get on a colour off his next red and follows it with a careless safety.

    Frame 18: Higgins 8-9 Yan

Now then what's this? Yan comes up short with a safety trying to land on the bottom of the pack and Higgins is eyeing a pot.

It's eye of the needle stuff but he makes it.

Both players have been on topsy-turvy journeys and an emotional rollercoaster tonight. John can't complain if he loses because he's had chances to win this. Is Yan Bingato ready to win? Is he ready to take the next step up the ladder?

You have to stay in the moment and don't think about how close you are to the finishing line and what could be. It's the shot in front of you. It's easier said then done though.

    Frame 18: Higgins 8-9 Yan

Not a good break at all from Higgins who immediately sees a red drift over the middle right pocket.

Yan absolute wallops that. It's wild, it's wayward but even though he leaves it on it is far from easy.

You could forgive Higgins for thinking he might have ended up with something a tad easier.

Can Higgins drop this one in to the bottom right corner? No. He rattles the jaws but that was never going in.

Yan has not baulked at any of the final-frame deciders he's had so far but this is for a Triple Crown tournament.

This is his chance for snooker immortality: to be on the roll of honour with the quality of the players that have won this title.

Higgins very much drinking in the last chance saloon here.

How well have they played today. It has just been scintillating stuff. From 7-5 behind Yan has played magnificently well.

  10. Yan one frame away from victorypublished at 22:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

    Frame 17: Higgins 8-9 Yan

Yan plays a cannon off the black which does not go according to script but a superb recovery to sink a red with his knuckles on the side cushion, saves the day.

It leaves him with an angle on the pink to finish off the job. He's going 9-8 up.

This is the big shot. It could be a frame winner.

    Frame 17: Higgins 8-8 Yan

Yan's just got to hold it together here. He's up to 41 and ticking along nicely by picking off the open reds.

    Frame 17: Higgins 8-8 Yan

A protracted spell of nudging the red an inch or so into the side of the reds comes to an end as Yan finds a way back to baulk and nestles behind the green.

No easy way out for Higgins, to coin a song from the Rocky series of movies.

And he can't help but leave his opponent with a red to the middle. Awkward bridging for this but down it goes.

Blimey, that Yan attempt to the bottom left corner was in a different postcode. Miles out.

    Importantly nothing left.

    Frame 17: Higgins 8-8 Yan

Higgins is in again. But there's no big break this time around. The balls are pretty awkward so it is just a 12 for starters.

    Big frame this.

I've been on the receiving end of this type of Higgins performance. The break he made there was fantastic when he was under the cosh.

You throw everything at him and batter him but you couldn't get away from him. He's like one of those boxers who you keep hitting but he stands in front of you and he's smiling at you.

Watching John Higgins is like watching a Terminator film. You think he is damaged but he walks out of a burning oil tanker and he is fully formed again. The ability to forget all the emotional ups and downs is an attribute that every player would love.

It's like Terminator v Predator out there!

I've seen it too many times. The opening red in that break was a fabulous shot. It was straight in the middle of the pocket.

  19. Higgins levels with gutsy 63published at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

    Frame 16: Higgins 8-8 Yan

Brilliant from John Higgins. Has he ever made a better 63 break than that?

This has been a tremendous visit to the table from John Higgins.

He had lost three frames in a row and in the manner he lost them he was right under it. His first red was hugely courageous.
