Strictly Come Dancing champion Ore Oduba has hot-footed it to Sports Personality after his triumph on Saturday night.

Arriving with his wife Portia, the BBC sports presenter said he was still in a daze after his victory was watched by 13.1 million viewers.

"I haven't even considered what it means - it's a mental blur," he said.

"We had quite a late night. It's been the best experience of my life and I'm in shock."

The tears of Wimbledon 2012 seem like a distant memory.

Now we've got a new, improved Andy Murray in front of us. Yes, he's still a bit stressy, sweary and grumpy on court, but now he's got major titles and medals aplenty.

For Murray, it's been another outstanding year. He won a second Wimbledon title, retained his Olympic tennis crown in Rio, and finished as world number one.

And now, as we see out 2016, he's aiming for back-to-back SPOTY awards.

  6. Contender profiles: Laura Kennypublished at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

"Go, Trotty, go!" read the banners at Rio 2016. And my oh my, did she go.

Laura Trott secured victory in the team pursuit and went on to retain her omnium title to become the first British woman to win four Olympic gold medals.

Her sunny disposition, dogged determination, and huge out-pouring of support for her partner, Jason Kenny, made her the Team GB poster girl at the Games.

And she also took on a new title on her return home: Mrs Laura Kenny.

The most surprising thing? She's still only 24. What a star.

Jason Kenny is all about the speed.

The Bolton-born cyclist competed at his first Olympics in 2008 and is now the joint most successful British Olympian of all time.

His first gold medal came in Beijing. He added two more in London 2012, and then three more in Rio 2016.

His reaction? He says he's just pleased to "do his bit".

A gold medal for understatement of the year, Mr Kenny.

  12. Contender profiles: Mo Farahpublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

British indie-rant band Chumbawamba once sang: "I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down."

Perhaps this is Mo Farah's training tune. The British long distance maestro went to Rio looking to retain his 5000m and 10000m titles but he nearly came unstuck.

He stumbled mid-race in the 10,000m final and nearly came a cropper in qualifying for the 5,000m final.

But, true to form, Farah recovered to secure the double double of Olympic titles.

And now he's earned a fifth SPOTY nomination.

Cox, from Leeds, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years ago and found her way in Paralympic sport.

She took gold in the T38 athletics 400m in Rio and triumphed in the C4-5 cycling time trial. She also took athletics silver in the T35-38 4x100m relay and bronze in the T38 100m.

Not content with that, she's now talking about entering bobsleigh at the next Winter Olympics.

  16. 2016 - Rugby league in reviewpublished at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

The unprecedented, the unpredictable and the downright implausible made 2016 a memorable year for rugby league.

Hull FC’s first ever Wembley win in the Challenge Cup final in August was edge of the seat viewing.

They held on for a slender 12-10 victory over Warrington thanks to Danny Houghton’s heroic try-saving tackle on Ben Currie in the 79th minute. It was Houghton’s 52nd tackle of the game.

No-one would've foreseen Leeds season. The treble winners in 2015 saw their form slump to a flirtation with relegation.

Wigan, like several clubs in a brutal year, had a campaign scarred by injury. However, skipper Sean O’Loughlin defined the club’s spirit when he returned from a seemingly season-ending injury to lead his side to victory over Warrington in the Grand Final in October.

The implausible was provided by Salford in the Million Pound game. Two scores behind with less than two minutes left, they managed the miraculous to force a draw.

In extra time, Gareth O’Brien kicked a 50 yard drop goal to keep them in Super League and condemn Hull KR to relegation.

Imperious Australia were easy winners of the Four Nations, beating NZ in the final at Anfield. New coach Wayne Bennett’s England failed to fire in the Autumn series.

She's got a smile that could light a thousand equestrian arenas, and that's just one of many talents possessed by Sophie Christiansen.

Not only is she the proud owner of eight Paralympic gold medals - three from dressage at Rio 2016 - she also has a first-class masters degree in mathematics and works as an analyst at an investment bank.

And in 2016, the 29-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, did not finish lower than second in any FEI event she competed in.
